    Stellar variability in open clusters. I. A new class of variable stars in NGC 3766

    Aims. We analyze the population of periodic variable stars in the open cluster NGC 3766 based on a 7-year multi-band monitoring campaign conducted on the 1.2 m Swiss Euler telescope at La Silla, Chili. Methods. The data reduction, light curve cleaning and period search procedures, combined with the long observation time line, allow us to detect variability amplitudes down to the milli-magnitude level. The variability properties are complemented with the positions in the color-magnitude and color-color diagrams to classify periodic variable stars into distinct variability types. Results. We find a large population (36 stars) of new variable stars between the red edge of slowly pulsating B (SPB) stars and the blue edge of delta Sct stars, a region in the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram where no pulsation is predicted to occur based on standard stellar models. The bulk of their periods ranges from 0.1 to 0.7 d, with amplitudes between 1 and 4 mmag for the majority of them. About 20% of stars in that region of the HR diagram are found to be variable, but the number of members of this new group is expected to be higher, with amplitudes below our milli-magnitude detection limit. The properties of this new group of variable stars are summarized, and arguments set forth in favor of a pulsation origin of the variability, with g-modes sustained by stellar rotation. Potential members of this new class of low-amplitude periodic (most probably pulsating) A and late-B variables in the literature are discussed. We additionally identify 16 eclipsing binary, 13 SPB, 14 delta Sct and 12 gamma Dor candidates, as well as 72 fainter periodic variables. All are new discoveries. Conclusions. We encourage to search for the existence of this new class of variables in other young open clusters, especially in those hosting a rich population of Be stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A.     Transport mechanisms were investigated for the three different types of water vapor diffusion membranes. Membranes representing porous wetting and porous nonwetting structures as well as dense diffusive membrane structures were investigated for water permeation rate as a function of: (1) temperature, (2) solids composition in solution, and (3) such hydrodynamic parameters as sweep gas flow rate, solution flow rate and cell geometry. These properties were measured using nitrogen sweep gas to collect the effluent. In addition, the chemical stability to chromic acid-stabilized urine was measured for several of each type of membrane. A technology based on the mechanism of vapor transport was developed, whereby the vapor diffusion rates and relative susceptibility of membranes to fouling and failure could be projected for long-term vapor recovery trials using natural chromic acid-stabilized urine

    Rate of correct detection of periodic signal with the Gaia satellite

    The Gaia satellite was selected as a cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2000 October and confirmed in 2002 with a current target launch date of 2011. The Gaia mission will gather on the same observational principles as Hipparcos detailed astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic properties of about one billion sources brighter than V= 20 mag. The nature of the measured objects ranges from near-Earth objects (NEOs) to gamma-ray burst afterglows, and encompasses virtually any kind of stars in our Galaxy. Gaia will provide multicolour (in about 20 passbands extending over the visible range) photometry with typically 250 observations distributed over 40 well-separated epochs during the 5-yr mission. The multi-epoch nature of the project will permit the detection and analysis of variable sources whose number is currently estimated in the range of several tens of millions, among the detectable sources. In this paper, we assess the performances of Gaia in analysing photometric periodic phenomena. We first quickly present the overall observational principle before discussing the implication of the scanning law in the time-sampling.     A purely geometric distance to the binary star Atlas, a member of the Pleiades

    We present radial velocity and new interferometric measurements of the double star Atlas, which permit, with the addition of published interferometric data, to precisely derive the orbital parameters of the binary system and the masses of the components. The derived semi-major axis, compared with its measured angular size, allows to determine a distance to Atlas of 132+-4 pc in a purely geometrical way. Under the assumption that the location of Atlas is representative of the average distance of the cluster, we confirm the distance value generally obtained through main sequence fitting, in contradiction with the early Hipparcos result (118.3+-3.5 pc).Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letter

    Stable tubule only polypeptides (STOP) proteins co-aggregate with spheroid neurofilaments in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

    A major cytopathological hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the presence of axonal spheroids containing abnormally accumulated neurofilaments. The mechanism of their formation, their contribution to the disease, and the possibility of other co-aggregated components are still enigmatic. Here we analyze the composition of such lesions with special reference to stable tubule only polypeptide (STOP), a protein responsible for microtubule cold stabilization. In normal human brain and spinal cord, the distribution of STOP proteins is uniform between the cytoplasm and neurites of neurons. However, all the neurofilament-rich spheroids present in the tissues of affected patients are intensely labeled with 3 different anti-STOP antibodies. Moreover, when neurofilaments and microtubules are isolated from spinal cord and brain, STOP proteins are systematically co-purified with neurofilaments. By SDS-PAGE analysis, no alteration of the migration profile of STOP proteins is observed in pathological samples. Other microtubular proteins, like tubulin or kinesin, are inconstantly present in spheroids, suggesting that a microtubule destabilizing process may be involved in the pathogenesis of ALS. These results indicate that the selective co-aggregation of neurofilament and STOP proteins represent a new cytopathological marker for spheroids

    MiRNAs are small non-coding RNAs ensuring the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Their expression is tissue-specific and some miRNAs have diagnostic and / or prognostic value for tumor classes. MiRNAs are involved in tumorigenesis by two mechanisms: amplification or deletion of chromosomal regions containing clusters of genes encoding miRNAs (quantitative effect) or modification of the effects of miRNAs on their target genes by mutation in the region of interaction with the mRNA (qualitative effect). Their specificity, the possibility for miRNA measurement in blood, must now lead to consider miRNAs as markers for therapeutic management. A better understanding of the different regulatory mechanisms involving miRNAs will also consider new therapeutic approaches

    Photo-responsive polymer with erasable and reconfigurable micro- and nano-patterns: An in vitro study for neuron guidance

    The interaction of cells with nanoscale topography has proven to be an important modality in controlling cell responses. Topographic parameters on material surfaces play a role in cell growth. We have synthesized a new bio compatible polymer containing photoswitching molecules. Stripepatterned (groove/ridge pattern) were patterned and erased with ease on this bio azopolymer with two different set-ups: one with the projection of an optical interference pattern and the other one by molecular self-organization with one single laser beam. These two set-ups allow the re-writing of pattern after erasing and its inscription in vitro. PC12 cells were cultured on the bio-photoswitching patterned polymer and compared with PC12 cells growing on a well know substrate: poly-L-lysine. This result is of interest for facilitating contact guidance and designing reconfigurable scaffold for neural network formation in vitro. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserve

    Gaia: Organisation and challenges for the data processing

    Gaia is an ambitious space astrometry mission of ESA with a main objective to map the sky in astrometry and photometry down to a magnitude 20 by the end of the next decade. While the mission is built and operated by ESA and an industrial consortium, the data processing is entrusted to a consortium formed by the scientific community, which was formed in 2006 and formally selected by ESA one year later. The satellite will downlink around 100 TB of raw telemetry data over a mission duration of 5 years from which a very complex iterative processing will lead to the final science output: astrometry with a final accuracy of a few tens of microarcseconds, epoch photometry in wide and narrow bands, radial velocity and spectra for the stars brighter than 17 mag. We discuss the general principles and main difficulties of this very large data processing and present the organisation of the European Consortium responsible for its design and implementation.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings of IAU Symp. 24

    Neurofilament high molecular weight-green fluorescent protein fusion is normally expressed in neurons and transported in axons: a neuronal marker to investigate the biology of neurofilaments

    The carboxy-terminal side arm of the neurofilament high subunit consists of a highly phosphorylated domain and a negatively charged region. Multiple evidences suggested that these domains are essential for the axonal phosphorylation and transport of neurofilaments and play a role in their abnormal accumulation following chemical intoxication or during neurodegenerative disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In order to investigate the consequences of altering this side arm of neurofilament high subunit we used a fusion protein (neurofilament high subunit-green fluorescent protein) between the mouse neurofilament high subunit missing a major part of the C-terminal domain and the reporter green fluorescent protein. In cell culture and in transgenic mice this fusion protein co-assembles and co-distributes with the endogenous intermediate filament network. Conditions known to disturb the cytoskeleton were also found to alter the distribution of the fusion protein in cell cultures. In transgenic mice the expression of the transgene evaluated by its fluorescent properties was found to be restricted to neurons, where the neurofilament high subunit-green fluorescent protein fusion protein is axonally transported. Biochemical approaches showed that the fusion protein is phosphorylated and co-purified with neurofilaments. Despite the presence of such an neurofilament high subunit-green fluorescent protein fusion protein, the axonal cytoskeletal density and the axonal caliber were not altered. Together these data show that removal of this portion of neurofilament high subunit does not affect the capacity of neurofilament high subunit to assemble and to be transported into axons, suggesting that this sequence is involved in another function. Moreover, the fluorescent properties of this fusion protein represent a useful marker
