Processing of Silicon Carbide by Laser Micro Sintering
Silicon carbide – a solid with covalent bonds - is conventionally synthesized via the Acheson
process. Usually solid bodies of silicon carbide with definite shapes are generated from the
grained material via hot isostatic pressing or liquid phase sintering. Both processes are
conducted under well-controlled temperature regimes. Applying the freeform fabrication
technique “Laser Micro Sintering” poses a big challenge to experimental skill due to the nonequilibrium conditions that are characteristic features of laser material processing.
Successive layers SiC layers with a thickness of 1ÎĽm were processed with coherent
radiation of 1064 nm. The specific behavior of two different silicon carbide powders - one of
them blended with additives - are reported along with interpretational approaches.Mechanical Engineerin
Lieb-Thirring inequalities for geometrically induced bound states
We prove new inequalities of the Lieb-Thirring type on the eigenvalues of
Schr\"odinger operators in wave guides with local perturbations. The estimates
are optimal in the weak-coupling case. To illustrate their applications, we
consider, in particular, a straight strip and a straight circular tube with
either mixed boundary conditions or boundary deformations.Comment: LaTeX2e, 14 page
Spectra of soft ring graphs
We discuss of a ring-shaped soft quantum wire modeled by interaction
supported by the ring of a generally nonconstant coupling strength. We derive
condition which determines the discrete spectrum of such systems, and analyze
the dependence of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions on the coupling and ring
geometry. In particular, we illustrate that a random component in the coupling
leads to a localization. The discrete spectrum is investigated also in the
situation when the ring is placed into a homogeneous magnetic field or threaded
by an Aharonov-Bohm flux and the system exhibits persistent currents.Comment: LaTeX 2e, 17 pages, with 10 ps figure
Generalized local interactions in 1D: solutions of quantum many-body systems describing distinguishable particles
As is well-known, there exists a four parameter family of local interactions
in 1D. We interpret these parameters as coupling constants of delta-type
interactions which include different kinds of momentum dependent terms, and we
determine all cases leading to many-body systems of distinguishable particles
which are exactly solvable by the coordinate Bethe Ansatz. We find two such
families of systems, one with two independent coupling constants deforming the
well-known delta interaction model to non-identical particles, and the other
with a particular one-parameter combination of the delta- and (so-called)
delta-prime interaction. We also find that the model of non-identical particles
gives rise to a somewhat unusual solution of the Yang-Baxter relations. For the
other model we write down explicit formulas for all eigenfunctions.Comment: 23 pages v2: references adde
Approximation by point potentials in a magnetic field
We discuss magnetic Schrodinger operators perturbed by measures from the
generalized Kato class. Using an explicit Krein-like formula for their
resolvent, we prove that these operators can be approximated in the strong
resolvent sense by magnetic Schrodinger operators with point potentials. Since
the spectral problem of the latter operators is solvable, one in fact gets an
alternative way to calculate discrete spectra; we illustrate it by numerical
calculations in the case when the potential is supported by a circle.Comment: 16 pages, 2 eps figures, submitted to J. Phys.
Transport and dynamics on open quantum graphs
We study the classical limit of quantum mechanics on graphs by introducing a
Wigner function for graphs. The classical dynamics is compared to the quantum
dynamics obtained from the propagator. In particular we consider extended open
graphs whose classical dynamics generate a diffusion process. The transport
properties of the classical system are revealed in the scattering resonances
and in the time evolution of the quantum system.Comment: 42 pages, 13 figures, submitted to PR
Mathematical Aspects of Vacuum Energy on Quantum Graphs
We use quantum graphs as a model to study various mathematical aspects of the
vacuum energy, such as convergence of periodic path expansions, consistency
among different methods (trace formulae versus method of images) and the
possible connection with the underlying classical dynamics.
We derive an expansion for the vacuum energy in terms of periodic paths on
the graph and prove its convergence and smooth dependence on the bond lengths
of the graph. For an important special case of graphs with equal bond lengths,
we derive a simpler explicit formula.
The main results are derived using the trace formula. We also discuss an
alternative approach using the method of images and prove that the results are
consistent. This may have important consequences for other systems, since the
method of images, unlike the trace formula, includes a sum over special
``bounce paths''. We succeed in showing that in our model bounce paths do not
contribute to the vacuum energy. Finally, we discuss the proposed possible link
between the magnitude of the vacuum energy and the type (chaotic vs.
integrable) of the underlying classical dynamics. Within a random matrix model
we calculate the variance of the vacuum energy over several ensembles and find
evidence that the level repulsion leads to suppression of the vacuum energy.Comment: Fixed several typos, explain the use of random matrices in Section
Duality and Anholonomy in Quantum Mechanics of 1D Contact Interactions
We study systems with parity invariant contact interactions in one dimension.
The model analyzed is the simplest nontrivial one --- a quantum wire with a
point defect --- and yet is shown to exhibit exotic phenomena, such as strong
vs weak coupling duality and spiral anholonomy in the spectral flow. The
structure underlying these phenomena is SU(2), which arises as accidental
symmetry for a particular class of interactions.Comment: 4 pages ReVTeX with 4 epsf figures. KEK preprint 2000-3. Correction

Localization on quantum graphs with random vertex couplings
We consider Schr\"odinger operators on a class of periodic quantum graphs
with randomly distributed Kirchhoff coupling constants at all vertices. Using
the technique of self-adjoint extensions we obtain conditions for localization
on quantum graphs in terms of finite volume criteria for some energy-dependent
discrete Hamiltonians. These conditions hold in the strong disorder limit and
at the spectral edges
Bound states in the continuum in open Aharonov-Bohm rings
Using formalism of effective Hamiltonian we consider bound states in
continuum (BIC). They are those eigen states of non-hermitian effective
Hamiltonian which have real eigen values. It is shown that BICs are orthogonal
to open channels of the leads, i.e. disconnected from the continuum. As a
result BICs can be superposed to transport solution with arbitrary coefficient
and exist in propagation band. The one-dimensional Aharonov-Bohm rings that are
opened by attaching single-channel leads to them allow exact consideration of
BICs. BICs occur at discrete values of energy and magnetic flux however it's
realization strongly depend on a way to the BIC's point.Comment: 5 pgaes, 4 figure
