Microwave to optical photon conversion via fully concentrated rare-earth-ion crystals

    Get PDF
Most investigations of rare-earth ions in solids for quantum information have used crystals where the rare-earth ion is a dopant. Here, we analyze the conversion of quantum information from microwave photons to optical frequencies using crystals where the rare-earth ions, rather than being dopants, are part of the host crystal. These concentrated crystals are attractive for frequency conversion because of their large ion densities and small linewidths. We show that conversion with both high efficiency and large bandwidth is possible in these crystals. In fact, the collective coupling between the rare-earth ions and the optical and microwave cavities is large enough that the limitation on the bandwidth of the devices will instead be the spacing between magnon modes in the crystal

Disruption of PTH Receptor 1 in T Cells Protects against PTH-Induced Bone Loss

Hyperparathyroidism in humans and continuous parathyroid hormone (cPTH) treatment in mice cause bone loss by regulating the production of RANKL and OPG by stromal cells (SCs) and osteoblasts (OBs). Recently, it has been reported that T cells are required for cPTH to induce bone loss as the binding of the T cell costimulatory molecule CD40L to SC receptor CD40 augments SC sensitivity to cPTH. However it is unknown whether direct PTH stimulation of T cells is required for cPTH to induce bone loss, and whether T cells contribute to the bone catabolic activity of PTH with mechanisms other than induction of CD40 signaling in SCs.Here we show that silencing of PTH receptor 1 (PPR) in T cells blocks the bone loss and the osteoclastic expansion induced by cPTH, thus demonstrating that PPR signaling in T cells is central for PTH-induced reduction of bone mass. Mechanistic studies revealed that PTH activation of the T cell PPR stimulates T cell production of the osteoclastogenic cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF). Attesting to the relevance of this effect, disruption of T cell TNF production prevents PTH-induced bone loss. We also show that a novel mechanism by which TNF mediates PTH induced osteoclast formation is upregulation of CD40 expression in SCs, which increases their RANKL/OPG production ratio. These findings demonstrate that PPR signaling in T cells plays an essential role in PTH induced bone loss by promoting T cell production of TNF. A previously unknown effect of TNF is to increase SC expression of CD40, which in turn increases SC osteoclastogenic activity by upregulating their RANKL/OPG production ratio. PPR-dependent stimulation of TNF production by T cells and the resulting TNF regulation of CD40 signaling in SCs are potential new therapeutic targets for the bone loss of hyperparathyroidism

The Effect of Pseudofrazil Particle Entrainment on Salinity Measurements

Abstract Salinity effects of particles entrained into conductivity cells have previously mainly been studied in the context of suspended sediment. Particles influencing conductivity cells can also be small ice crystals (frazil) that may form in supercooled water. The detection of supercooled water depends on accurate, high precision temperature, salinity and pressure measurements. As it is currently not possible to measure salinity in situ, the standard procedure is to measure conductance over a known volume and calculate salinity. Frazil ice entrained into a conductivity cell changes the volume of conductive fluid in the conductivity cell, thus changing the conductivity, salinity and supercooling measurements. We present results on the effect of entraining microplastic into a Sea‐Bird Electronics conductivity cell to simulate the effect of frazil. We show that particle volumes comparable to frazil volumes observed in the ocean change the measured conductivity and led to changes in calculated supercooling between 0.3 and 10 mK, possibly up to the same order of magnitude as naturally observed supercooling in the ocean. Further, we demonstrate that where supercooling is present, natural frazil ice concentrations can have an appreciable effect on parameters calculated with both the Equation of State of Seawater 1980 and Thermodynamic Equation of Seawater 2010 equations of state of seawater. Thus, to ensure accurate measurements in locations of very high frazil concentration, the entrainment of frazil needs to be prevented, which is not possible with methods currently available, or corrected for. An example for such a correction is given and could be modified to be applicable to other particles, for example, sediment

    Anxiety as social practice

This paper advances a theory of anxiety as social practice. Distinguishing between individual anxieties and anxiety as a social condition, the paper suggests that anxiety has not been subject to the same level of theoretical scrutiny as related concepts such as risk, trust, or fear. Drawing on the existential philosophy of Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Heidegger, the paper shows how contemporary anxieties involve the recognition of our own mortality and the destabilisation of established systems of meaning. The paper then turns to practice theory to show how social anxieties can be understood as events that rupture the fabric of everyday life, creating specific subjects and objects, ‘framed’ by different communities of practice, and becoming institutionalised to varying degrees. Focusing on a range of food-related anxieties, the paper explores the geographical and historical constitution of social anxiety, examining the process of anxiety formation and the factors that inhibit or enhance its social and spatial diffusion
