Universality of the edge tunneling exponent of fractional quantum Hall liquids

    Get PDF
Recent calculations of the edge tunneling exponents in quantum Hall states appear to contradict their topological nature. We revisit this issue and find no fundamental discrepancies. In a microscopic model of fractional quantum Hall liquids with electron-electron interaction and confinement, we calculate the edge Green's function via exact diagonalization. Our results for ν=1/3\nu = 1/3 and 2/3 suggest that in the presence of Coulomb interaction, the sharpness of the edge and the strength of the edge confining potential, which can lead to edge reconstruction, are the parameters that are relevant to the universality of the electron tunneling I-V exponent.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

The Deelen infrasound array for recording sonic booms and events of CTBT interest

    Get PDF
The Seismology Division of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has build up expertise in infrasound measurements by investigating low frequency events in order to distinguish between seismic and sonic events. KNMI operates, amongst others, a sixteen element microbarometer array with an aperture of 1.5 km, the Deelen Infrasound Array (DIA). Sonic booms and events of Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) interest are recorded within the frequency range of 100 seconds and 40 Hertz. Recently, KNMI and Microflown Technologies B.V. started a collaboration concerning infrasound measurements. This paper reports the use of a novel sensor. The so-called Microflown [1] is an acoustic sensor, sensitive for frequencies from 0Hz up to 1kHz. The Microflown is developed at the University of Twente and commercialised by Microflown Technologies B.V [3]

Altering the Urban Frontier: Gentrification and Public Parks in New York City

    Get PDF
After decades of cuts to federal funding, cities were left with few resources for public services, particularly parks and open spaces. Current trends of massive gentrification in New York City are changing the housing market and other components of the private sector. In addition to altering socio-spatial dynamics in the housing and consumer markets, gentrification can alter public spaces as well. By comparing three New York City neighborhoods at different stages of gentrification, I analyzed socio-spatial dynamics, public and private funding, event programming, and ethnographically observed changes in the physical and social landscape of the park, and neighborhood, over time

Deciduous Trees for South Dakota Landscapes

This publication was prepared to meet the need for an informative reference on deciduous trees in South Dakota. Also, this publication will be of regional value due to its rather extensive treatment of cultivars, including hybrid and clonal varieties

Onderzoek naar de ammoniak- en geuremissie van stallen LI : beddenstal voor gespeende biggen = Adapted house for weaned piglets

    Get PDF
Ammonia emission from animal husbandry has to be reduced in the Netherlands by 70% in the year 2005, compared with the emission level in 1980. Moreover, recently adapted odour legislation requires measurements of the odour emissions of the main conventional and new housing systems. Research was carried out into the emission of ammonia and odour from a house for weaned piglets with boxes. The research was carried out during a spring and summer period
