The Spirit Lives On: Communication Seminars as a Surprisingly Hardy, Valuable, and Promising Heritage of NPAC

After many decades, dwindling numbers of communicators, extension personnel, and development professionals recall the National Project in Agricultural Communications (NPAC) of the 1950s and early 1960s. But around the world many professionals, scholars, and organizations can recognize the spirit and legacy of NPAC, which has had substantial impact well beyond its original national mission. NPAC became the springboard for a long-running series of communication seminars that built the capacity of foreign students, studying in the United States, to return home better able to communicate as change agents in fostering development. Seminars of NPAC also point to key ingredients for addressing urgent issues facing our nation and world today. This study addresses the origins, features, transitions, durability, and impacts of those communication seminars across nearly 60 years. The authors used historical analysis to reveal a surprising trail of service that leads to the present day and beyond. It provides new insights about how the NPAC communication training program has exerted more than 15 kinds of impact on agricultural development, on organizations at all levels throughout the world - and on individuals touched by it. The analysis highlights insightful, unpublished backstories about the communication training heritage of NPAC. It also identifies key elements of effective communication training programs and identifies opportunities for further research and practice. It could help readers identify professional development innovations the Journal of Applied Communications will advance and report during its second century

First Canadian Breeding Record of the Dovekie (Alle alle)

The Dovekie (Alle alle) is the smallest and one of the most abundant alcids inhabiting the North Atlantic Ocean (Salomonsen, 1950; Brown et al., 1975; Roby et al., 1981). Until now there have been no documented breeding records of the Dovekie in the Canadian Arctic, though they are known to gather by the millions in northwest Baffin Bay during spring migration to breeding colonies in Northwest Greenland (Renaud et al., 1982). The Dovekie is well known to the Inuit of Baffin Island; it is called akpaliapik, in contradistinction to its larger relative, the akpa or Thick-billed Murre (uria lomvia). In August 1983, during a bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) study on the east coast of Baffin Island, Apak Qaqqasiq mentioned that Dovekies nested in at least two locations in Home Bay. With him and Josepi Tigullaraq, N.W.T. Wildlife Officer from Clyde, we visited one of these colonies by boat on 20 August. The colony was located on a small island (1 km long) called Abbajalik in Inuktitut (unnamed on maps), in northern Home Bay (69 02 N, 67 23 W) about 800 km south of the closest known Dovekie nesting locations in Northwest Greenland. ... The Dovekie colony appeared to be vacated and we were about to leave when Qaqqasiq detected a faint call from the moraine. After carefully moving a few boulders, we found two Dovekie eggs, and nearby an adult Dovekie. ..

Women’s views on anxiety in pregnancy and the use of anxiety instruments: a qualitative study

Objective: To explore women’s experience of anxiety in pregnancy and views on the use of anxiety instruments in antenatal care. Background: Anxiety in pregnancy is associated with adverse birth outcomes, developmental and behavioural problems in infants and postnatal depression. Despite recommendations for routine psychological assessment in pregnancy the optimal methods to identify anxiety in pregnancy have not been confirmed. Methods: A qualitative study using two focus group discussions was undertaken. Focus group one included women in a community setting and focus group two included women in a hospital clinic setting who had received additional support for anxiety in pregnancy. Participants were women who had given birth within the past nine months and considered themselves to have been anxious during their pregnancy. Results: Three main themes were identified using template analysis: sources of support, administration of anxiety instruments and the use of instruments to prompt discussion. Women stated anxiety instruments could help them to identify their anxious feelings and prompt a discussion around those feelings. However they expressed concerns surrounding the administration of anxiety instruments and questioned how useful they would be in helping women access help and support. Conclusions: The introduction of anxiety instruments in antenatal care may present an opportunity to discuss women’s emotional health and anxieties. Providing women with sufficient time to discuss their anxious feelings, identified by such instruments, could facilitate access to additional support
