Flank solar wind interaction
This report summarizes the results of the first 12 months of our program to study the interaction of the Earth's magnetosphere with the solar wind on the far flanks of the bow shock. This study employs data from the ISEE-3 spacecraft during its traversals of the Earth's magnetotail and correlative data from spacecraft monitoring the solar wind upstream. Our main effort to date has involved assembling data sets and developing new plotting programs. Two talks were given at the Spring Meeting of the American Geophysical Union describing our initial results from analyzing data from the far flank foreshock and magnetosheath. Real-time application of knowledge-based systems
The Rapid Prototyping Facility (RPF) was developed to meet a need for a facility which allows flight systems concepts to be prototyped in a manner which allows for real-time flight test experience with a prototype system. This need was focused during the development and demonstration of the expert system flight status monitor (ESFSM). The ESFSM was a prototype system developed on a LISP machine, but lack of a method for progressive testing and problem identification led to an impractical system. The RPF concept was developed, and the ATMS designed to exercise its capabilities. The ATMS Phase 1 demonstration provided a practical vehicle for testing the RPF, as well as a useful tool. ATMS Phase 2 development continues. A dedicated F-18 is expected to be assigned for facility use in late 1988, with RAV modifications. A knowledge-based autopilot is being developed using the RPF. This is a system which provides elementary autopilot functions and is intended as a vehicle for testing expert system verification and validation methods. An expert system propulsion monitor is being prototyped. This system provides real-time assistance to an engineer monitoring a propulsion system during a flight
Dynamics of simulated water under pressure
We present molecular dynamics simulations of the SPC/E model of water to
probe the dynamic properties at temperatures from 350 K down to 190 K and
pressures from 2.5GPa (25kbar) down to -300MPa (-3kbar). We compare our results
with those obtained experimentally, both of which show a diffusivity maximum as
a function of pressure. We find that our simulation results are consistent with
the predictions of the mode-coupling theory (MCT) for the dynamics of weakly
supercooled liquids -- strongly supporting the hypothesis that the apparent
divergences of {\it dynamic} properties observed experimentally may be
independent of a possible thermodynamic singularity at low temperature. The
dramatic change in water's dynamic and structural properties as a function of
pressure allows us to confirm the predictions of MCT over a much broader range
of the von Schweidler exponent values than has been studied for simple atomic
liquids. We also show how structural changes are reflected in the wave-vector
dependence of dynamic properties of the liquid along a path of nearly constant
diffusivity. For temperatures below the crossover temperature of MCT (where the
predictions of MCT are expected to fail), we find tentative evidence for a
crossover of the temperature dependence of the diffusivity from power-law to
Arrhenius behavior, with an activation energy typical of a strong liquid.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figure
