Use of Theory to Guide Integration of Virtual Reality Technology in Nursing Education: A Scoping Study

Background: There is growing interest among academic nurse educators in using virtual reality (VR) environments as a pedagogical tool to enhance student learning. Purpose: The aim of this scoping study was to identify the theories or conceptual models that informed the application of virtual reality technology in nursing education programs. Methods: A scoping study using the Arksey and O\u27Malley (2005) framework was conducted. A search strategy recommended and executed by a research librarian yielded 18 final articles for review. Findings: There is limited use of theory or a conceptual model, particularly of nursing origin, to guide the integration of VR technology for student learning. Discussion: More research is needed to define best practices for application of VR technology for specific curricular needs, and for theory development based on specific concepts and disciplinary perspectives of learning

Analysis of Comair flight 5191 with the functional resonance accident model

International audienceThe goal of an accident investigation is to determine why a certain combination of conditions, events, and actions led to the specific outcome. Accidents in complex high risk operations, such as aviation, are frequently explained as the result of system failures, but few methods exist that can adequately be used to investigate how the variability of individual, technical, and organisational performance in combination may lead to an adverse outcome. The Functional Resonance Accident Model (FRAM) provides an approach to identify these elements and determine their interrelationship. This paper presents the principles of FRAM and illustrates how it was used to analyse a highly publicized aviation accident, the crash of Comair Airlines (Delta Connection) flight 5191 in Lexington, KY on August 27th, 2006. The use of FRAM provided details that were not found in the NTSB analysis and as such this approach model may help future investigations better elucidate causal factors and yield improved safety recommendations

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program leadership training

Background The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program was created to address the nursing shortage via development of the next generation of national leaders in academic nursing. Purpose The leadership training combined development at the scholar's home institution with in-person didactic and interactive sessions with notable leaders in nursing and other disciplines. Methods A curriculum matrix, organized by six domains, was evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively. Discussion What set this program apart is that it immersed junior faculty in concerted leadership development with regard to all aspects of the faculty role so that teaching interactively, making use of the latest in information technology, giving testimony before a policy-making group, participating in strategic planning, and figuring out how to reduce the budget without jeopardizing quality were all envisioned as part of the faculty role. Conclusion The domains covered by this program could easily be used as the framework to plan other leadership-development programs for the next generation of academic leader

Progress toward standardized diagnosis of vascular cognitive impairment: Guidelines from the Vascular Impairment of Cognition Classification Consensus Study

INTRODUCTION: Progress in understanding and management of vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) has been hampered by lack of consensus on diagnosis, reflecting the use of multiple different assessment protocols. A large multinational group of clinicians and researchers participated in a two-phase Vascular Impairment of Cognition Classification Consensus Study (VICCCS) to agree on principles (VICCCS-1) and protocols (VICCCS-2) for diagnosis of VCI. We present VICCCS-2. METHODS: We used VICCCS-1 principles and published diagnostic guidelines as points of reference for an online Delphi survey aimed at achieving consensus on clinical diagnosis of VCI. RESULTS: Six survey rounds comprising 65-79 participants agreed guidelines for diagnosis of VICCCS-revised mild and major forms of VCI and endorsed the National Institute of Neurological Disorders-Canadian Stroke Network neuropsychological assessment protocols and recommendations for imaging. DISCUSSION: The VICCCS-2 suggests standardized use of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders-Canadian Stroke Network recommendations on neuropsychological and imaging assessment for diagnosis of VCI so as to promote research collaboration

Integration of the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment Screening Instrument Into School Nurse Practice

Substance abuse in adolescents has been recognized as a public health problem at the national and global levels. Adolescents are at risk for experimenting with substances. School nurses in secondary schools are well positioned to screen and counsel students on substance use. In this project, school nurses’ self-efficacy levels increased in using the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) process posteducation, and SBIRT was integrated into school nurses’ practice. Initiatives aimed at stopping or preventing substance use are beneficial for a healthy society

Trauma-Informed Care For The Pediatric Nurse

Background Trauma is not limited to medical trauma and includes chronic stressors, toxic stress, adverse childhood events, abuse, and now the COVID-19 pandemic. Principles of trauma-informed care and resiliency guide pediatric nursing care across the life span from birth to adolescence. Trauma-informed care principles are pertinent to the nursing care needs of healthy and ill children from infancy to adolescence across care settings. Methods The purpose of this integrative literature review (IRL) is to elucidate evidence-based practices for pediatric nurses specific to trauma, trauma-informed principles, and the integration of these principles to care. UsingWhittemore and Knafl\u27s (2005) methodology, this IRL presents empirical literature to operationalize trauma-informed care for the pediatric nurse through 1) identification of the problem; 2) literature search; 3) data evaluation; 4) data analysis; 5) result presentation. Findings Results are presented in a contemporary framework by theSubstance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (2018) of trauma-awareness for the pediatric nurse, trauma-informed principles, and the integration of these principles to care. Pediatric nurses are in a unique position to offer trauma-informed care by recognizing and managing trauma to include chronic stressors, toxic stress, adverse childhood experiences, and abuse. Discussion Pediatric nurses today are caring for patients in a complex and diverse healthcare climate amid the world\u27s worst public health pandemic in living memory. Awareness of trauma, assessment of trauma in pediatrics, and health and resiliency promotion are critical in moving forward post-pandemic.
