Informal jobs and contribution to social security: Evidence from a double selection model

We estimate a double selection model to study informality in the Chilean labor market. We use three different measures of informality: lack of a signed contract, contribution to social security and both at the same time. The double selection states that, in a first stage, individuals chose between the formal and informal sector, the one that gives them the highest utility, and in a second stage, employers will select some workers from the ones that chose the formal sector, but some workers will not be chosen and then will be excluded from the formal sector. We find that this double selection model fits the data better than a simple selection model, confirming that there is some exclusion. We also find that education is that variable that is most highly correlated with informality. Finally, the results suggest that the head of the household is less likely to be informal, which could imply that informality affects mostly the secondary labor force in the household. Also, the number of children are negatively correlated with being formal.

La caja de herramientas para el trabajo del talento humano Trans en Manizales.

Maestría en Gerencia del Talento Humano, Facultad de Ciencias Sociales y Humanas.El objetivo de este artículo es comprender las percepciones de las personas trans y organizaciones sobre la caja de herramientas para la inclusión laboral de las personas trans en el mundo del trabajo en la ciudad de Manizales. Se utilizó una guía de entrevistas semiestructuradas, en donde se buscó identificar la percepción que tienen tanto las organizaciones como personas del colectivo trans frente a la caja de herramientas presentada y así poder dar cumplimiento con el objetivo planteado. Como resultado, se obtuvo que esta propuesta tuvo gran acogida, puesto que la posición de la mayoría de las personas como de las organizaciones fue positiva y se busca implementarla en un corto plazo para así generar mayor visibilidad al colectivo trans

Wealth Disparities for Early Childhood Anthropometrics and Skills: Evidence from Chilean Longitudinal Data

We study wealth disparities in the formation of anthropometrics, cognitive skills and socio-emotional skills. We use a sample of preschool and early school children in Chile. We extend the previous literature by using longitudinal data, which allow us to study the dynamics of child growth and skills formation. Also, we include information on mother\u27s and father\u27s schooling attainment and mother\u27s cognitive ability. We find that there are no significant anthropometric differences favoring the better-off at birth (and indeed length differences at birth to the disadvantage of the better-off), but during the first 30 months of life wealth disparities in height-for-age z scores (HAZ) favoring the better-off emerge. Moreover, we find wealth disparities in cognitive skills favoring the better-off emerge early in life and continue after children turn 6 years of age. We find no concurrent wealth disparities for and socio-emotional skills. Thus, even though the wealth disparities in birth outcomes if anything favor the poor, significant disparities favoring the rich emerge in the early post-natal period. Trabajadores por cuenta propia: ¿Quienes son? ¿De donde vienen? ¿Para donde van?

Usando datos del módulo de historia laboral de la Encuesta de Protección Social para los años 2002, 2004 y 2006, se construyó un panel mensual para el período 2000-2006. Para modelar las variables que intervienen en la decisión de los individuos de trabajar por cuenta propia consideramos un modelo general del mercado del trabajo, donde los individuos eligen entre 5 opciones, estas son: trabajo por cuenta propia, empleador, asalariado, desempleado e inactivo. Este modelo fue estimado usando un probit multinomial. Los resultados muestran que los trabajadores por cuenta propia tienden a ser hombres de baja escolaridad, con baja aversión al riesgo y que estudiaron en establecimiento públicos. Estos resultados, sumado al relativamente bajo salario de los trabajadores por cuenta propia muestran que el trabajo por cuenta propia tiende a ser de baja productividad . Para modelar las transiciones que existen entre ocupaciones calculamos matrices de markov para el mismo período, estas marices nos muestran que en promedio un 78% de los trabajadores por cuenta propia se mantiene en ese estado después de un año. Al modelar las transiciones desde y hacia el trabajo por cuenta propia encontramos que existen dos tipos predominantes de transiciones circulares, una es entre el trabajo por cuenta propia y el desempleo, que ocurre para individuos con baja educación. Review and Thermodynamic Modeling with NRTL Model of Vapor–Liquid Equilibria (VLE) of Aroma Compounds Highly Diluted in Ethanol–Water Mixtures at 101.3 kPa

A review of the vapor-liquid equilibrium data of aroma compounds highly diluted in hydroalcoholic mixtures at 101.3 kPa is presented. The study includes 44 aroma compounds present in distilled beverages from seven chemical families: acetals, alcohols, carbonyl compounds, carboxylic acids, esters, furans, and terpenes. The equilibrium data are modeled using the ideal gas hypothesis (with a correction term for dimerization in the case of carboxylic acids) and the NRTL model. A set of binary interaction parameters is generated, and the quality of the representation is evaluated. A classification of the aroma compounds in terms of their relative volatility with respect to ethanol and water is proposed over the whole ethanol composition range in the liquid phase. Finally, a comparison with the representation obtained when using interaction parameters calculated from binary and ternary mixture data at high concentrations is performed in order to evaluate the extrapolation capability of the NRTL model

Vapor–Liquid Equilibrium of Ethyl Lactate Highly Diluted in Ethanol–Water Mixtures at 101.3 kPa. Experimental Measurements and Thermodynamic Modeling Using Semiempirical Models

A thermodynamic study of the vapor–liquid equilibrium for the ternary system ethyl lactate–ethanol–water was performed at 101.3 kPa and infinite dilution regarding ethyl lactate, for boiling temperatures ranging from (352.3 to 370.0) K. The experimental measurements were carried out with a recirculation still and the equilibrium compositions of ethyl lactate were determined by gas chromatography. The volatility of ethyl lactate decreases when the ethanol content in the liquid phase is increased. The investigated system was correctly correlated by the NRTL and UNIQUAC models, with an average absolute relative deviation below 10%. The comparison with the results obtained from interaction parameters fitted to experimental data of the binary systems ethyl lactate–ethanol and ethyl lactate–water at 101.3 kPa, proves that the parameters calculated in this work give a better description of the ethyl lactate volatility, a key parameter in distillation, at low concentrations. These latter parameters are therefore recommended for process simulation and optimization in alcoholic beverages production

El estudio de caso presenta una revisión prospectiva de la empresa MP Hermanos Compañía Exportadora e Importadora Colombiana, se ha utilizado un nombre ficticio para el desarrollo de este capítulo. Se considera importante debido a la situación que enfrenta la empresa desde el año 2018 cuando sus ventas y utilidades empezaron a bajar y por la inestabilidad que se refleja debido al cese de actividades presentado durante varios meses del año 2020 debido a la pandemia del COVID-19, ocasionando además una pérdida de mercado y de posicionamiento de la marca
