Race, Class, and College Access: Achieving Diversity in a Shifting Legal Landscape
This is a groundbreaking report examining how legal challenges to race-conscious admissions are influencing contemporary admissions practices at selective colleges and universities around the country. The report is especially timely in light of the U.S. Supreme Court decision to take a second look at the constitutionality of the University of Texas' admissions policy by granting review in Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin.Study findings are based on responses to a first-of-its-kind national survey of undergraduate admissions and enrollment management leaders administered in 2014 -- 15. Data reflect responses from 338 nonprofit four-year institutions that collectively enrolled 2.7 million students and fielded over 3 million applications for admission in 2013 -- 14. While ankle arthrodesis has remained the gold standard treatment for symptomatic primary, secondary, and posttraumatic ankle arthritis, more recently, total ankle replacement (TAR) has seen considerable improvement in terms of biomechanics, function, and complication rates. Why do borrowers pledge collateral? new empirical evidence on the role of asymmetric information
An important theoretical literature motivates collateral as a mechanism that mitigates adverse selection, credit rationing, and other inefficiencies that arise when borrowers hold ex ante private information. There is no clear empirical evidence regarding the central implication of this literature—that a reduction in asymmetric information reduces the incidence of collateral. We exploit exogenous variation in lender information related to the adoption of an information technology that reduces ex ante private information, and compare collateral outcomes before and after adoption. Our results are consistent with this central implication of the private-information models and support the empirical importance of this theory.
Debt maturity, risk, and asymmetric information
We test the implications of Flannery’s (1986) and Diamond’s (1991) models concerning the effects of risk and asymmetric information in determining debt maturity, and we examine the overall importance of informational asymmetries in debt maturity choices. We employ data from more than 6,000 commercial loans from 53 large U.S. banks. Our results for low-risk firms are consistent with the predictions of both theoretical models, but our findings for high-risk firms conflict with the predictions of Diamond’s model and with much of the empirical literature. Our findings also suggest a strong quantitative role for asymmetric information in explaining debt maturity.
A haloarchaeal ferredoxin electron donor that plays an essential role in nitrate assimilation
In the absence of ammonium, many organisms, including the halophilic archaeon Haloferax volcanii DS2 (DM3757), may assimilate inorganic nitrogen from nitrate or nitrite, using a ferredoxin-dependent assimilatory NO3-/NO2- reductase pathway. The small acidic ferredoxin Hv-Fd plays an essential role in the electron transfer cascade required for assimilatory nitrate and nitrite reduction by the cytoplasmic NarB- and NirA-type reductases respectively. UV–visible absorbance and EPR spectroscopic characterization of purified Hv-Fd demonstrate that this protein binds a single [2Fe–2S] cluster, and potentiometric titration reveals that the cluster shares similar redox properties with those present in plant-type ferredoxins
