Updating the bathymetry of the Maltese Islands : a national-scale marine survey employing interferometric sonar
Chapter 8The ERDF project detailed a requirment for the scanning of an extensive area of 415
square kilometers employing an interferometric sonar. The process, though hampered
by high wind and adverse sea conditions was completed as per contract requirements,
yielding interesting new information of the bathymetric landscapes of the Maltese Islands.
Survey design: The campaign for the bathymetric survey of the Maltese islands, carried
out during the summers of 2012 and 2013, summed total area of about 415 square
kilometres and covered depths between 15 and 200 m. Th e total survey area was divided
into 28 survey blocks, laid out so each one was completed during a full day of work. This
rule applied to all the blocks except for blocks 16 and 17 which were completed over
the course of two days each. Each survey block was completed by running survey lines
parallel to the blocks’ longitudinal axis. During rough weather, lines were run parallel to
predominant wave direction to minimise vessel roll. Line spacing ranged from 50 to 300
metres and was decided by a combination of the sensor’s accuracy at increasing horizontal
range, depth, seabed type and sea state. Crosslines were also run for each block, usually on
the boundary, to allow for additional data checks between neighbouring blockspeer-reviewe
CERN Storage Systems for Large-Scale Wireless
The project aims at evaluating the use of CERN computing infrastructure for next generation sensor networks data analysis. The proposed system allows the simulation of a large-scale sensor array for traffic analysis, streaming data to CERN storage systems in an efficient way. The data are made available for offline and quasi-online analysis, enabling both long term planning and fast reaction on the environment

Let\u27s Dance Hasta el Amanecer: The Functions of Code-switching in Hispanic \u27Spanglish\u27 Music by Bilingual Singers
This study examines the role code-switching plays in the creation of song lyrics by Hispanic Bilingual artists that feature more than one language. It points out what functions the switches fulfill and what patterns they produce. Furthermore, it also investigates whether these patterns are affected based on the matrix language of the song. The data collected comes from a variety of songs from different genres that fall under the musical term ‘Latin Music’. The data also includes artists from different geographical backgrounds and genders. The study focuses on thirty Hispanic bilingual artists that include both English and Spanish in their songs. The purpose of this study is to observe the use of code-switching by these artists and determine the frequency of each function of code-switching. The results indicate that on average, the expressive function of code-switching is the most commonly used code-switch function used by Hispanic bilingual artists. It was also found that the referential functions occurred with more frequency in song lyrics with Spanish as the matrix language. This was determined to be because of the continued incorporation of English social media words in song lyrics. In this study, the referential function did not show up at all in lyrics with English as the matrix language. Additionally, English matrix songs were found to contain more instances of code-switching than those of Spanish matrix songs. This was shown as there being an underlining desire for Hispanic bilinguals to ‘call back’ to their cultural roots, by incorporating Spanish into predominantly English songs
