Delirium and Extrapyramidal Symptoms Due to a Lithium-Olanzapine Combination Therapy: A Case Report

We report an elderly patient who developed severe delirium and extrapyramidal signs after initiation of lithium-olanzapine combination. On hospital admission, serum levels of lithium were found to be 3.0 mM/L which were far above toxic level. Immediate discontinuation of both drugs resulted in complete resolution of most of the symptoms except for perioral dyskinesia which persisted for three more months. We critically discussed the differential diagnosis of lithium intoxication and assessed confounding factors which induce delirium and extrapyramidal signs related with combination therapy of lithium and olanzapine

The Turkish version of the Omaha System: Its use in practice-based family nursing education

The aims of this manuscript are to examine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Omaha System, and to demonstrate its effectiveness as a toot for nursing education. In this methodological and descriptive study, seventy students attending a training program used the Omaha System in clinical practice settings for assessing health problems of 157 clients and for nursing interventions during 378 home visits. After the system's adaptation to the Turkish language, its content validity was reconfirmed through feedback from the students and interrater reliability was tested on six independent students with kappa statistics. The reliabitity scores were at a statistically significant level when coding the records using the Omaha System. Clinical practice was explained with 332 problems and 1783 nursing intervention terms. Study findings indicate several strengths, including high reliability - except in target terms, coding of problems and interventions, improved understanding of the course, as well. as some limitations: the need for new terms and more time required for manual documentation. The findings of the study supported the usefulness of the Omaha System in describing the practice of community health nursing. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Objective: To examine the opinion of patients of an occupational diseases hospital on the quality of provision of occupational medicine services in Turkey. Materials and Methods: A total of 189 patients were interviewed using a 13-item survey about their jobs and workplaces. Results: The overall results of this study were as follows: 80.4% of the patients stated that physicians were located at their workplaces; 66.1% stated that inadequate attention was given to ensure the physical, psychological and social health of the employees; and 63.5% stated that sufficient protection against health risks was not provided. Conclusions: The quality of provision of occupational medicine services should be improved

Erdogan, Erman/0000-0003-2566-3284WOS:000604454200002A newly designed oligo-Schiff-base was prepared and characterized to investigate its optical and morphological response and antioxidant activity. We first clarified the synthesis of 2-ethoxy-6-(((2-hydroxyphenyl)imino)methyl)phenol (EHPIMP) from the condensation reaction of 3-ethoxy-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde with 2-aminophenol. The subsequent oxidative polycondensation process yielded the target oligo(2-ethoxy-6-(((2-hydroxyphenyl)imino)-methyl)phenol), oligo (EHPIMP). The structural elucidation of oligo (EHPIMP) was performed by H-1, C-13 NMR, TGA, FTIR and GPC systems. The optical properties of the EHPIMP and the oligo (EHPIMP)'s thin films were compared mainly with UV-Vis spectroscopy. Corresponding band gap (E-g) values of the EHPIMP and the oligo (EHPIMP) films were obtained as 2.224 and 1.404 eV, respectively. 2D and 3D surface images of films were analyzed with atomic force microscopy. In the AFM results, the surface roughness values and the average roughness were attained to be 8.28 nm and 46.63 nm for EHPIMP and the oligo (EHPIMP)'s thin films, respectively. Furthermore, the antioxidant activities were investigated using in vitro FRAP, CUPRAC, DPPH, and ABTS methods. The obtained data demonstrated that EHPIMP and oligo (EHPIMP) had effective reducing antioxidant potentials and radical scavenging activities

Relationship of radiometabolic biomarkers to KRAS mutation status and ALK rearrangements in cases of lung adenocarcinoma

Purpose: Rapid diagnosis of genetic mutations is important for targeted therapies such as EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors. KRAS mutation and ALK rearrangement are also important in determining treatment. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of 18F-FDG PET to predict KRAS mutation and ALK rearrangement in order to determine the frequency of these genetic markers in our lung adenocarcinoma cases and contribute to forthcoming meta-analysis studies. Methods: A total of 218 patients with lung adenocarcinoma (EGFR analyzed) who were seen at our clinic between 2012 and 2014 were included in the study. The results of the 18 F-FDG-PET scans for each patient were retrospectively recorded with the associated medical documents. ALK rearrangements were analyzed in 166 of the 218 patients, while 50 of the 218 patients were analyzed for KRAS mutational status. SPSS 15.0 for Windows was used for statistical analysis. Results: FDG avidity was higher in cases with KRAS mutations and ALK rearrangements than those without, but the difference was not significant. ALK rearrangements were more common in younger, female, and nonsmoking patients with lung adenocarcinoma. Conclusions: The small numbers of KRAS mutations and ALK rearrangements are the limitation of this study for evaluation of diagnostic imaging. The frequency of these genetic alterations was as reported in the literature. We believe that our work will contribute to future meta-analysis
