    Nucleation mechanism for the direct graphite-to-diamond phase transition

    Graphite and diamond have comparable free energies, yet forming diamond from graphite is far from easy. In the absence of a catalyst, pressures that are significantly higher than the equilibrium coexistence pressures are required to induce the graphite-to-diamond transition. Furthermore, the formation of the metastable hexagonal polymorph of diamond instead of the more stable cubic diamond is favored at lower temperatures. The concerted mechanism suggested in previous theoretical studies cannot explain these phenomena. Using an ab initio quality neural-network potential we performed a large-scale study of the graphite-to-diamond transition assuming that it occurs via nucleation. The nucleation mechanism accounts for the observed phenomenology and reveals its microscopic origins. We demonstrated that the large lattice distortions that accompany the formation of the diamond nuclei inhibit the phase transition at low pressure and direct it towards the hexagonal diamond phase at higher pressure. The nucleation mechanism proposed in this work is an important step towards a better understanding of structural transformations in a wide range of complex systems such as amorphous carbon and carbon nanomaterials

    Machine-learning of atomic-scale properties based on physical principles

    We briefly summarize the kernel regression approach, as used recently in materials modelling, to fitting functions, particularly potential energy surfaces, and highlight how the linear algebra framework can be used to both predict and train from linear functionals of the potential energy, such as the total energy and atomic forces. We then give a detailed account of the Smooth Overlap of Atomic Positions (SOAP) representation and kernel, showing how it arises from an abstract representation of smooth atomic densities, and how it is related to several popular density-based representations of atomic structure. We also discuss recent generalisations that allow fine control of correlations between different atomic species, prediction and fitting of tensorial properties, and also how to construct structural kernels---applicable to comparing entire molecules or periodic systems---that go beyond an additive combination of local environments

    Preparing isiXhosa home language teachers for the 21st century classroom: Student teachers' experiences, challenges and reflections

    The aim of the article is to identify the gaps between theory and practice in pre-service teacher training with special reference to the teaching of isiXhosa as a home language in the Further Education and Training (FET) phase (Grades 10–12) in some Western Cape high schools. The article is based on data that was collected from Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) students taking isiXhosa (home language) as one of their teaching method subjects as part of their pre-service training. The data were collected by means of an open-ended questionnaire, semi-structured interviews and an analysis of student teachers’ reflective journals. The article provides an analysis of PGCE students’ experiences and reflections on the teaching of isiXhosa as a home language in schools. It argues that if there is a gap between theory underpinning initial pre-service training and actual practice in schools, there will be no significant improvement in the teaching of isiXhosa as a home language. It concludes by proposing ways of improving both pre-service and in-service teacher education practice to develop African languages as academic or intellectual languages at school level

    Association of early life factors and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in childhood: historical cohort study

    In a historical cohort study of all singleton live births in Northern Ireland from 1971–86 (n=434 933) associations between early life factors and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia were investigated. Multivariable analyses showed a positive association between high paternal age (⩾35 years) and acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (relative risk=1.49; 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.96–2.31) but no association with maternal age. High birth weight (⩾3500 g) was positively associated with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (relative risk=1.66; 95% CI=1.18–2.33). Children of mothers with a previous miscarriage or increased gestation (⩾40 weeks) had reduced risks of ALL (respective relative risks=0.49; 95% CI=0.29–0.80, and 0.67; 95% CI=0.48–0.94). Children born into more crowded households (⩾1 person per room) had substantially lower risks than children born into less crowded homes with also some evidence of a lower risk for children born into homes with three adults (relative risks=0.56; 95% CI=0.35–0.91 and 0.58; 95% CI=0.21–1.61 respectively). These findings indicate that several early life factors, including living conditions in childhood and maternal miscarriage history, influence risk of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in childhood

    DNA vaccination for prostate cancer: key concepts and considerations

    While locally confined prostate cancer is associated with a low five year mortality rate, advanced or metastatic disease remains a major challenge for healthcare professionals to treat and is usually terminal. As such, there is a need for the development of new, efficacious therapies for prostate cancer. Immunotherapy represents a promising approach where the host’s immune system is harnessed to mount an anti-tumour effect, and the licensing of the first prostate cancer specific immunotherapy in 2010 has opened the door for other immunotherapies to gain regulatory approval. Among these strategies DNA vaccines are an attractive option in terms of their ability to elicit a highly specific, potent and wide-sweeping immune response. Several DNA vaccines have been tested for prostate cancer and while they have demonstrated a good safety profile they have faced problems with low efficacy and immunogenicity compared to other immunotherapeutic approaches. This review focuses on the positive aspects of DNA vaccines for prostate cancer that have been assessed in preclinical and clinical trials thus far and examines the key considerations that must be employed to improve the efficacy and immunogenicity of these vaccines

    Continuous delivery of endogenous inhibitors from poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) polymeric microspheres inhibits glioma tumor growth

    Purpose: There is an urgent need for modalities that can localize and prolong the administration of the antitumor agents, particularly antiangiogenic, to achieve long-term tumor inhibition. However, one of the major obstacles is designing a device in which the biological activity of sensitive endogenous inhibitors is retained. We have designed a biodegradable polymeric device, which provides a unique and practical means of localizing and continuously delivering hemopexin (PEX) or platelet factor 4 fragment (PF-4/CTF) at the tumor site while maintaining their biological activity. The potential and efficacy of this system is shown in vitro and in vivo in a human glioma mouse model. Experimental Design: Polymeric microspheres made of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) were loaded with very low amounts of PEX and PF-4/CTF. The release profiles of these factors from PLGA and their biological activity were confirmed in vitro using proliferation assays done on endothelial and tumor cells. Tumor inhibition using this system was studied in nude mice bearing a human s.c. glioma. Results: PEX and PF-4/CTF released in vitro from PLGA microspheres were biologically active and significantly inhibited the proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells, bovine capillary endothelial cells, and U87-MG cells. A single local s.c. injection of PLGA microspheres loaded with low amounts of PEX or PF-4/CTF resulted in an 88% and 95% reduction in glioma tumor volume 30 days post-treatment. Immunohistochemical analysis of the treated tumors showed a marked decrease in tumor vessel density compared with untreated tumors. Conclusion: Our findings show that polymeric microspheres are a very promising approach to locally and efficiently deliver endogenous inhibitors to the tumor site leading to a significant inhibition of the tumor

    Improving Sorghum Biomass and Productivity through Application of Moringa Leaf Juice

    Globally, fourteen types of Moringa species are discovered. Among these species Moringaoleifera and Moringastenopetala potentially use for nutritional purpose, medicinal and feed values. In addition to these, Moringa leaf juice is being use in the form of a foliar spray that causes the plants to be stronger, more resistant to pests and disease and enhances plant growth. Plants treated with Moringa juice spray produce more and larger fruit and consequently have higher yield. The study conducted at “Kewet” district, Shewa Robit site with the objective of evaluating the contribution of Moringa leaf juice on grain yield and biomass production of sorghum. The result indicated that there was no significant difference observed among treatments on grain yield. However, foliar spray of Moringaoleifera with fertilizer and Moringastenopetala with fertilizer was obtained 25% and 34% of grain yield advantage as compare to only chemical fertilization application. Hence, at Shewarobit condition, foliar spray of Moringa leaf juice is not recommended for sorghum grain yield production. However further study is required across different soil type and agro climatology
