X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies of non-stoichiometric superconducting NbB2+x

Polycrystalline samples of NbB2+x with nominal composition (B/Nb) = 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The spectra revealed Nb and B oxides on the surface of the samples, mainly B2O3 and Nb2O5. After Ar ion etching the intensity of Nb and B oxides decreased. The Nb 3d5/2 and B 1s core levels associated with the chemical states (B/Nb) were identified and they do not change with etching time. The Binding Energy of the Nb 3d5/2 and B 1s core levels increase as boron content increases, suggesting a positive chemical shift in the core levels. On the other hand, analysis of Valence Band spectra showed that the contribution of the Nb 4d states slightly decreased while the contribution of the B 2p(pi) states increased as the boron content increased. As a consequence, the electronic and superconducting properties were substantially modified, in good agreement with band-structure calculations.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl

A galactic microquasar mimicking winged radio galaxies

A subclass of extragalactic radio sources known as winged radio galaxies has puzzled astronomers for many years. The wing features are detected at radio wavelengths as low-surface-brightness radio lobes that are clearly misaligned with respect to the main lobe axis. Different models compete to account for these peculiar structures. Here, we report observational evidence that the parsec-scale radio jets in the Galactic microquasar GRS 1758-258 give rise to a Z-shaped radio emission strongly reminiscent of the X and Z-shaped morphologies found in winged radio galaxies. This is the first time that such extended emission features are observed in a microquasar, providing a new analogy for its extragalactic relatives. From our observations, we can clearly favour the hydrodynamic backflow interpretation against other possible wing formation scenarios. Assuming that physical processes are similar, we can extrapolate this conclusion and suggest that this mechanism could also be at work in many extragalactic cases

Structural analysis, magnetic and transport properties of the (Ru1-xCox)Sr2GdCu2O8 system

The effects of Co substitution on structural and superconducting properties of RuSr2GdCu2O8 compound have been studied. Rietveld refinements of the X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the cobalt ion progressively replaces ruthenium sites. This replacement induces significant changes on the crystal structure and on the magnetic and superconducting properties. The effects Co substitution on the superconducting behaviour, and more particulary on the changes induce by the hole doping mechanism, were investigated in (Ru1-xCox)Sr2GdCu2O8 by a "bond valence sum" analysis with Co content from x= 0.0 to x = 0.2. The weak ferromagnetic transition at Tm= 138.2 K is shifted to lower temperature, and suppressed at higher Co content. From the crystallographic point of view the Ru-O(1)-Cu bond angle, associated to the rotation of the RuO6 octahedra, around the c-axis remain essetially constant when Ru is substituted by Co. Furthermore, increasing Co content has the effect to increase the weak ferromagnetic moment, which may be interpreted as the main responsible for breaking the delicate balance between magnetic and superconducting ordering.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figure

Unusual behaviours and Impurity Effects in the Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor CePt3Si

We report a study in which the effect of defects/impurities, growth process, off-stoichiometry, and presence of impurity phases on the superconducting properties of noncentrosymmetric CePt3Si is analysed by means of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth. We found that the linear low-temperature response of the penetration depth -indicative of line nodes in this material- is robust regarding sample quality, in contrast to what is observed in unconventional centrosymmetric superconductors with line nodes. We discuss evidence that the broadness of the superconducting transition may be intrinsic, though not implying the existence of a second superconducting transition. The superconducting transition temperature systematically occurs around 0.75 K in our measurements, in agreement with resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility data but in conflict with specific heat, thermal conductivity and NMR data in which Tc is about 0.5 K. Random defects do not change the linear low-temperature dependence of the penetration depth in the heavy-fermion CePt3Si with line nodes, as they do in unconventional centrosymmetric superconductors with line nodes.Comment: To appear in New Journal of Physic

Anthropology in Mexico has a longstanding trajectory of professional involvement, both in academia and public settings. In this essay we stress the work of those professionals of the discipline who work outside academic settings. We undertake the discussion starting from different perspectives expressed by Mexican anthropologists who have advanced contrasting views of anthropological work. We present information about current professional settings where anthropologists are employed in Mexico, stressing the growing diversity of these niches and the challenges that young anthropologists faceEn México, la antropología tiene una larga trayectoria de desempeño profesional tanto en el ámbito académico como fuera de él.
