The least favorable noise
Suppose that a random variable X of interest is observed perturbed by independent additive noise Y. This paper concerns the “the least favorable perturbation” ˆ Y ε , which maximizes the prediction error E ( X − E ( X | X + Y ) ) 2 in the class of Y with v a r ( Y ) ≤ ε . We find a characterization of the answer to this question, and show by example that it can be surprisingly complicated. However, in the special case where X is infinitely divisible, the solution is complete and simple. We also explore the conjecture that noisier Y makes prediction worse

A classroom deployment of a haptic system for learning cell biology
The use of haptic systems in the classroom for enhancing science education is an underexplored area. In the education literature, it has been reported that certain concepts in science education are difficult for students to grasp and, as a result, misconceptions can be formed in the students' knowledge. We conducted a study with 62 Year 8 (typically 12-13 years old) students who used a haptic application to study cell biology, specifically the concept of diffusion across a cell membrane. The preliminary analysis of the feedback from the students suggests opportunities for haptic applications to enhance their learning, and also highlights a number of points to consider in the design of the application, including the choice of haptic interface and the design of the virtual environment
Gravitational energy of a magnetized Schwarzschild black hole - a teleparallel approach
We investigate the distribution of gravitational energy on the spacetime of a
Schwarzschild black hole immersed in a cosmic magnetic field. This is done in
the context of the {\it Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity}, which
is an alternative geometrical formulation of General Relativity, where gravity
is describe by a spacetime endowed with torsion, rather than curvature, with
the fundamental field variables being tetrads. We calculate the energy enclosed
by a two-surface of constant radius - in particular, the energy enclosed by the
event horizon of the black hole. In this case we find that the magnetic field
has the effect of increasing the gravitational energy as compared to the vacuum
Schwarzschild case. We also compute the energy (i) in the weak magnetic field
limit, (ii) in the limit of vanishing magnetic field, and (iii) in the absence
of the black hole. In all cases our results are consistent with what should be

Predicting cell types and genetic variations contributing to disease by combining GWAS and epigenetic data
Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are enriched in individuals suffering from a given disease. Most disease-associated SNPs fall into non-coding regions, so that it is not straightforward to infer phenotype or function; moreover, many SNPs are in tight genetic linkage, so that a SNP identified as associated with a particular disease may not itself be causal, but rather signify the presence of a linked SNP that is functionally relevant to disease pathogenesis. Here, we present an analysis method that takes advantage of the recent rapid accumulation of epigenomics data to address these problems for some SNPs. Using asthma as a prototypic example; we show that non-coding disease-associated SNPs are enriched in genomic regions that function as regulators of transcription, such as enhancers and promoters. Identifying enhancers based on the presence of the histone modification marks such as H3K4me1 in different cell types, we show that the location of enhancers is highly cell-type specific. We use these findings to predict which SNPs are likely to be directly contributing to disease based on their presence in regulatory regions, and in which cell types their effect is expected to be detectable. Moreover, we can also predict which cell types contribute to a disease based on overlap of the disease-associated SNPs with the locations of enhancers present in a given cell type. Finally, we suggest that it will be possible to re-analyze GWAS studies with much higher power by limiting the SNPs considered to those in coding or regulatory regions of cell types relevant to a given disease
Conditional embryonic lethality to improve the sterile insect technique in Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae)
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The sterile insect technique (SIT) is an environment-friendly method used in area-wide pest management of the Mediterranean fruit fly <it>Ceratitis capitata </it>(Wiedemann; Diptera: Tephritidae). Ionizing radiation used to generate reproductive sterility in the mass-reared populations before release leads to reduction of competitiveness.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Here, we present a first alternative reproductive sterility system for medfly based on transgenic embryonic lethality. This system is dependent on newly isolated medfly promoter/enhancer elements of cellularization-specifically-expressed genes. These elements act differently in expression strength and their ability to drive lethal effector gene activation. Moreover, position effects strongly influence the efficiency of the system. Out of 60 combinations of driver and effector construct integrations, several lines resulted in larval and pupal lethality with one line showing complete embryonic lethality. This line was highly competitive to wildtype medfly in laboratory and field cage tests.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The high competitiveness of the transgenic lines and the achieved 100% embryonic lethality causing reproductive sterility without the need of irradiation can improve the efficacy of operational medfly SIT programs.</p
The clinical features of the piriformis syndrome: a systematic review
Piriformis syndrome, sciatica caused by compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle, has been described for over 70 years; yet, it remains controversial. The literature consists mainly of case series and narrative reviews. The objectives of the study were: first, to make the best use of existing evidence to estimate the frequencies of clinical features in patients reported to have PS; second, to identify future research questions. A systematic review was conducted of any study type that reported extractable data relevant to diagnosis. The search included all studies up to 1 March 2008 in four databases: AMED, CINAHL, Embase and Medline. Screening, data extraction and analysis were all performed independently by two reviewers. A total of 55 studies were included: 51 individual and 3 aggregated data studies, and 1 combined study. The most common features found were: buttock pain, external tenderness over the greater sciatic notch, aggravation of the pain through sitting and augmentation of the pain with manoeuvres that increase piriformis muscle tension. Future research could start with comparing the frequencies of these features in sciatica patients with and without disc herniation or spinal stenosis
Acute effects of nicotine on visual search tasks in young adult smokers
Rationale Nicotine is known to improve performance on tests involving sustained attention and recent research suggests that nicotine may also improve performance on tests involving the strategic allocation of attention and working memory. Objectives We used measures of accuracy and response latency combined with eye-tracking techniques to examine the effects of nicotine on visual search tasks. Methods In experiment 1 smokers and non-smokers performed pop-out and serial search tasks. In experiment 2, we used a within-subject design and a more demanding search task for multiple targets. In both studies, 2-h abstinent smokers were asked to smoke one of their own cigarettes between baseline and tests. Results In experiment 1, pop-out search times were faster after nicotine, without a loss in accuracy. Similar effects were observed for serial searches, but these were significant only at a trend level. In experiment 2, nicotine facilitated a strategic change in eye movements resulting in a higher proportion of fixations on target letters. If the cigarette was smoked on the first trial (when the task was novel), nicotine additionally reduced the total number of fixations and refixations on all letters in the display. Conclusions Nicotine improves visual search performance by speeding up search time and enabling a better focus of attention on task relevant items. This appears to reflect more efficient inhibition of eye movements towards task irrelevant stimuli, and better active maintenance of task goals. When the task is novel, and therefore more difficult, nicotine lessens the need to refixate previously seen letters, suggesting an improvement in working memory
30 days wild: development and evaluation of a large-scale nature engagement campaign to improve well-being
There is a need to increase people’s engagement with and connection to nature, both for human well-being and the conservation of nature itself. In order to suggest ways for people to engage with nature and create a wider social context to normalise nature engagement, The Wildlife Trusts developed a mass engagement campaign, 30 Days Wild. The campaign asked people to engage with nature every day for a month. 12,400 people signed up for 30 Days Wild via an online sign-up with an estimated 18,500 taking part overall, resulting in an estimated 300,000 engagements with nature by participants. Samples of those taking part were found to have sustained increases in happiness, health, connection to nature and pro-nature behaviours. With the improvement in health being predicted by the improvement in happiness, this relationship was mediated by the change in connection to nature
