Proton-deuteron radiative capture cross sections at intermediate energies
Differential cross sections of the reaction have been
measured at deuteron laboratory energies of 110, 133 and 180 MeV. The data were
obtained with a coincidence setup measuring both the outgoing He and the
photon. The data are compared with modern calculations including all possible
meson-exchange currents and two- and three- nucleon forces in the potential.
The data clearly show a preference for one of the models, although the shape of
the angular distribution cannot be reproduced by any of the presented models.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in EPJ
Systematic investigation of the elastic proton-deuteron differential cross section at intermediate energies
To investigate the importance of three-nucleon forces (3NF) systematically
over a broad range of intermediate energies, the differential cross sections of
elastic proton-deuteron scattering have been measured at proton bombarding
energies of 108, 120, 135, 150, 170 and 190 MeV at center-of-mass angles
between and . Comparisons with Faddeev calculations show
unambiguously the shortcomings of calculations employing only two-body forces
and the necessity of including 3NF. They also show the limitations of the
latest few-nucleon calculations at backward angles, especially at higher beam
energies. Some of these discrepancies could be partially due to relativistic
effects. Data at lowest energy are also compared with a recent calculation
based on \chipt
The Apple Falls Increasingly Far: Parent-Child Correlation in Schooling and the Growth of Post-Secondary Education in Switzerland
We analyze the completed highest education degree of two birth cohorts (1934-1943 and 1964-1973) in Switzerland, using data from the 1999 Swiss Household Panel. The fraction of tertiary graduates has increased over time, for women more so than for men. Educational attainment depends strongly on the educational attainment of parents. For women, we find that a substantial fraction of the overall increase in participation in tertiary education can be explained by the narrowing gap in participation rates between women with lowly educated parents and women with highly educated parents. Logit models show that financial problems have become more important as an impediment for higher education
Enabling quantitative data analysis through e-infrastructures
This paper discusses how quantitative data analysis in the social sciences can engage with and exploit an e-Infrastructure. We highlight how a number of activities which are central to quantitative data analysis, referred to as ‘data management’, can benefit from e-infrastructure support. We conclude by discussing how these issues are relevant to the DAMES (Data Management through e-Social Science) research Node, an ongoing project that aims to develop e-Infrastructural resources for quantitative data analysis in the social sciences
Ethical and methodological issues in engaging young people living in poverty with participatory research methods
This paper discusses the methodological and ethical issues arising from a project that focused on conducting a qualitative study using participatory techniques with children and young people living in disadvantage. The main aim of the study was to explore the impact of poverty on children and young people's access to public and private services. The paper is based on the author's perspective of the first stage of the fieldwork from the project. It discusses the ethical implications of involving children and young people in the research process, in particular issues relating to access and recruitment, the role of young people's advisory groups, use of visual data and collection of data in young people's homes. The paper also identifies some strategies for addressing the difficulties encountered in relation to each of these aspects and it considers the benefits of adopting participatory methods when conducting research with children and young people
Variational Calculation on A=3 and 4 Nuclei with Non-Local Potentials
The application of the hyperspherical harmonic approach to the case of
non-local two-body potentials is described. Given the properties of the
hyperspherical harmonic functions, there are no difficulties in considering the
approach in both coordinate and momentum space. The binding energies and other
ground state properties of A=3 and 4 nuclei are calculated using the CD Bonn
2000 and N3LO two-body potentials. The results are shown to be in excellent
agreement with corresponding ones obtained by other accurate techniques.Comment: 12 pages, 6 tables, RevTex
Three-Nucleon Force Effects in Nucleon Induced Deuteron Breakup: Predictions of Current Models (I)
An extensive study of three-nucleon force effects in the entire phase space
of the nucleon-deuteron breakup process, for energies from above the deuteron
breakup threshold up to 200 MeV, has been performed. 3N Faddeev equations have
been solved rigorously using the modern high precision nucleon-nucleon
potentials AV18, CD Bonn, Nijm I, II and Nijm 93, and also adding 3N forces. We
compare predictions for cross sections and various polarization observables
when NN forces are used alone or when the two pion-exchange Tucson-Melbourne
3NF was combined with each of them. In addition AV18 was combined with the
Urbana IX 3NF and CD Bonn with the TM' 3NF, which is a modified version of the
TM 3NF, more consistent with chiral symmetry. Large but generally model
dependent 3NF effects have been found in certain breakup configurations,
especially at the higher energies, both for cross sections and spin
observables. These results demonstrate the usefulness of the kinematically
complete breakup reaction in testing the proper structure of 3N forces.Comment: 42 pages, 20 ps figures, 2 gif figure
A new form of three-body Faddeev equations in the continuum
We propose a novel approach to solve the three-nucleon (3N) Faddeev equation
which avoids the complicated singularity pattern going with the moving
logarithmic singularities of the standard approach. In this new approach the
treatment of the 3N Faddeev equation becomes essentially as simple as the
treatment of the two-body Lippmann-Schwinger equation. Very good agreement of
the new and old approaches in the application to nucleon-deuteron elastic
scattering and the breakup reaction is found.Comment: 20 pages, 3 eps figure
Systematic investigation of three-nucleon force effects in elastic scattering of polarized protons from deuterons at intermediate energies
The question, whether the high-quality nucleon-nucleon potentials can successfully describe the three-nucleon system, and to what extent three-nucleon forces (3NFs) play a role, has become very important in nuclear few-body physics. One kinematic region where effects because of 3NFs show up is in the minimum of the differential cross section of elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering. Another observable, which could give an indication about the contribution of the spin to 3NFs, is the vector analyzing power. To investigate the importance of 3NFs systematically over a broad range of intermediate energies, both observables of elastic proton-deuteron scattering have been measured at proton bombarding energies of 108, 120, 135, 150, 170, and 190 MeV, covering an angular range in the center-of-mass system between 30° and 170°. The results show unambiguously the shortcomings of calculations employing only two-body forces and the necessity of the inclusion of 3NFs. They also show the limitations of the results of the present day models for few-nucleon systems at backward angles, especially at higher beam energies. New calculations based on chiral perturbation theory are also presented and compared with the data at the lowest energy
