In this study, within the scope of teaching mis-derived words in Turkish, the mis-derived words are analyzed to understand which suffixes the Turkish words are derived and to use the language consciously. In education, many mis-derived words in Turkish originating from various forms and needs over time are encountered. It is of great importance to understand the Turkish language well and to teach the structure of the language, its suffixes and roots, and how words are derived. In the second quarter of the 20th century, hundreds of new words derived in place of old Arabic and Persian origin words began to be widely used, especially with the simplification and Turkization flow in the language. In addition, many new words have been derived from Turkish roots with suffixes for new objects and concepts that have entered human life with the developing technology instead of directly taking the words of Western origin. Although deriving new words for new objects and ideas has responded to a need, it is not possible to say that all of these newly derived words are generally accepted and used, unlike the words that arise naturally in the natural flow of life; however, many of them have become widespread and have taken their place in the language system. However, what is more remarkable than that is that some of these newly derived words are derived with suffixes (-ay+ / -ey+, -ceme+, +de+, +dem+, +em+, +et+, -et+, -ev+, +ge+, -ge-, +gen+, +gü+, +gün+ / +kin+, +m+, + (ı)ntı+, -sa-, +tay+, -v+, -y+, +y+) are not current in Turkish. In this study, what is meant by the wrongly derived word is the words derived with these suffixes that are not current in Turkish. The reasons for these wrong derivations have not been examined in detail here since they will be the subject of a separate study; only it is said that they arise with a wrong derivation with suffixes that are not found in Turkish or why some words that are allegedly derived incorrectly cannot be considered incorrect

The aim of the present study is to examine the effect of demographic characteristics of students in Turkey upon their performance in TIMSS, an international assessment exam and Secondary Education Transition Examination which is a national exam (OGS). One of the fields of sciences, biology is taken into account as student performance. As a result of the t-test analysis, it was determined that gender has a statistically significant effect on the students’ TIMSS and TEOG exam results; besides, it was found that female students are more successful compared to boys Whether students receive private tutoring which refers to the economic characteristics of the students has not statistically significant effect on TIMSS biology scores, while it has a positive and significant impact upon OGS biology scores.  Moreover, findings revealed that parental educational level has a positive and significant effect on TIMSS and OGS scores of the students. Keywords: TIMSS, TEOG, science achievement, Turkey, private tutorin

The Effects of Material Properties on Building Performance

    Get PDF
In recent earthquakes during the last two decades, severe damages have been occurred on the existing buildings in Turkey. Destructive earthquakes revealed that the existing building stock in urban regions is significantly vulnerable to seismic hazard. A large number of residential buildings located in regions of high seismicity require performance evaluation before the next big earthquake hits the region. In many earthquake resistant codes, several procedures are proposed to determine the building performance. The investigations on the damaged buildings show that material strengths are very important parameters on the building performance. In this study, material strengths’ effects on the building performance were investigated by using a nonlinear elastic analysis method

Interface slip model for reinforced concrete columns strengthened with concrete jacketing

    Get PDF
Retrofit and strengthening of columns can be an effective solution to improve the capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) structures when the structural details and strength are insufficient to resist extreme loads. When concrete jacketing is used by enlarging the existing RC column cross section, the main concern is the performance loss between new and old concrete due to potential interface slip. There are three major options to improve slip resistance at the interface including surface roughening, dowels, or both. In this study, these methods are evaluated and parameters are proposed to model the load transfer along the interface between the existing and new concrete. The response of reinforced concrete jacketed columns is simulated using the proposed numerical models. The effectiveness and need for surface roughening, dowels, or their combination are investigated. A slip coefficient is proposed to model the friction between new and old concrete materials based on comparison of the experimental data and numerical simulations

The aim of this study is to define kinship (hemşehri) associations that are organized in the cities through dense immigration and examine their relationship with rural. The materials in the study consist of kinship assocciations, rural development and secondary data about immigration. Investments of some kinship association in major cities is drawing attention. Informal parties that have problem in establishing connection problem with the city have kept their links to the rural stronger. Therefore, it is observed in most of the kinship associations that they direct their economic and political power to rural areas. As a result, researches regarding the possible roles of existing kinship associations in rural transformation Turkey should be done. Besides, kinship associations should be supported as the role of kinship asscociations in rural areas and the approach of participatory rural transformatio approach show parallellism. At the same time micro policies towards providing effectivenes of kinship associations in rural transformation investments should be established

The aim of this survey is to analyze the perception of teachers regarding the relationship between change leadership and organizational commitment. The study sample is 221 teachers working in the schools of Gaziantep, Sanliurfa and Mardin during the 2014-15 educational year since it is easier to reach them. The sample choice of our study has been made by applying the disproportionate cluster sampling method. According to the linear regression analysis results; change leadership predicts organizational commitment in a positive way. Also, multiple regression analysis results indicate that change-selling behaviors of change leadership predict organizational commitment significantly. It is beneficial for principals who want to increase the organizational commitment of teachers to exhibit change leadership behaviors in schools

Nowadays, each business which targets achievement have to trust and be generous towards its employees. It is proven in researchs that employees cooperation and solidarity are compulsary for the company's success. Also, business success depend on employees share the same target and complement each other. To prevent social idleness as a result of team works take part a lot more in business, is a necessity for executives. Social idleness is the effort of individuals as a member of a group is less than the effort of individuals as individualy. The results of researchs demonstrate that social idleness is a social disease might form negative consequences for individuals, social institutions and society . While the pathophysiology of chronic disorders varies there are three basic mechanisms - inflammation, oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction - that are common in many chronic diseases. However, the failure of these mechanisms to work synchronously can lead to morbidity complicating the course of many chronic diseases. We analyzed data of 178 patients from cohorts with selected chronic diseases in this quasi-experimental study. Endothelial dysfunction was determined by flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) levels. Serum ADMA, high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), serum PTX3, malondialdehyde (MDA), Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels and FMD were studied in baseline and after 12 weeks of Morinda citrifolia (anti-atherosclerotic liquid- AAL), omega-3 (anti-inflammatory capsules- AIC) and extract with Alaskan blueberry (anti-oxidant liquid- AOL). Stepwise multivariate regression analysis was used to evaluate the association of FMD with clinical and serologic parameters. Serum ADMA, MDA, PTX3, hsCRP and albumin levels, and proteinuria were significantly decreased while CuZn-SOD, GSH-Px and FMD levels were significantly increased following AAL, AIC and AOL therapies. The FMD was negatively correlated with serum ADMA, MDA, PTX3, and hsCRP levels and positively correlated with CuZn-SOD and eGFR levels. ADMA and PTX3 levels were independently related to FMD both before and after AAL, AIC and AOL therapies. Our study shows that serum ADMA, MDA, PTX3 levels are associated with endothelial dysfunction in patients with selected chronic diseases. In addition, short-term AAL, AIC and AOL therapies significantly improves a number of parameters in our cohort and can normalize ADMA, PTX3, hsCRP and MDA levels
