Stefka Georgieva Eriksen: Writing and Reading in Medieval Manuscript Culture. The Translation and Transmission of the Story of Elye in Old French and Old Norse Literary Contexts

    Get PDF
In a deftly conducted study, Stefka G. Eriksen shows in practice how a carefully controlled multidisciplinary approach can enrich the study of medieval literature. Informed by recent and less recent findings by scholars on the status of reading and writing in medieval culture, and combining translation studies, polysystem theory and a materialist examination of manuscripts in the spirit of new philology, Eriksen’s book demonstrates convincingly how new thinking can cast fresh light on old problems but also allow new questions to be posed. Quite a lot has been done, in recent decades, to further our understanding of the translation, transmission and reception of Old French literature in Scandinavia from the early 13th century onwards, thanks to the pioneering work of scholars such as Marianne E. Kalinke, Eyvind Fjeld Halvorsen, Geraldine Barnes and many others. Eriksen is one of several newcomers to the field—among them one should mention Sif Ríkharðsdóttir and her 2012 book Medieval Translations and Cultural Discourse. The Movement of Texts in England, France and Scandinavia—who are proposing new ways of approaching this literary phenomenon, by thinking of them in terms of adaptation and exchange between linguistic areas and cultural milieus

    Human Disease - Unintended Globalization

Before man was exchanging goods and ideas, he was exchanging germs. As such, the spread of infectious disease constitutes the first truly global phenomenon and, therefore, marks the beginnings—primitive though they may have been—of what today we have finally termed ‘globalization.’ The global spread of disease, then, proves that globalization is not new and that its origins were the result of a different narrative than the ones we read from globalization theorists; it further demonstrates that the modern conception of the phenomenon is only now so well recognized because the accelerated and efficient processes that inform its daily activities have heightened our conscious acknowledgement of its existence

Nitrate leaching in grazed grasslands of different composition and age

    Get PDF
In a field experiment at Research Centre Foulum a suction cup technique was used to investigate nitrate leaching from grassland depending on composition (grass-clover or perennial ryegrass), management (grazing or cutting) and age of the swards. In 1997-2001 was investigated the successive nitrate leaching from 4-7 year old grazed grass-clover and ryegrass with cut plots of similar age and spring barley as reference. In 2000-2001 the simultaneous nitrate leaching from newly established swards, swards grazed for 1 and 7 years and swards cut for 7 years was investigated. In the newly established swards nitrate leaching from grass-clover and ryegrass were similar but at increasing sward age nitrate leaching from the fertilized ryegrass increased dramatically compared to a constant low level from the unfertilized grass-clover. Apparently, the clover component of grass-clover was able to equalize differences in soil nitrogen availability in swards of different age. The results of N2 fixation studies in swards of different age in 2001 will be used in the interpretation of the nitrate leaching data

Nations in news: ordinary stereotypes in national TV news coverage of Spain and Germany

    Get PDF
This contribution investigates the stereotyping of nations in TV news text. It compares the headline appearances of the names Germany and Spain on each other‟s leading national evening TV news program during the peak of the European financial crisis (2011-13). The paper combines quantitative analysis of word-frequency and topic-distribution in a 621 headline-corpus, with in-depth case analysis of news values underpinning 32 extracted headline examples. A discussion of literature in media anthropology and Critical Discourse Analysis concludes with the argument that intentions and consequences of media discourse should be separated, whereas differences between ordinary and official language should not be overvalued. The case study shows how the textual display of Germans and Spaniards supports the everyday imagining of national belonging, how othering works through the labelling of nations as “economies”, and how negativity, competition and relatedness are prevailing values underlying the examined news headlines

The fields of uniformly accelerated charges in de Sitter spacetime

The scalar and electromagnetic fields of charges uniformly accelerated in de Sitter spacetime are constructed. They represent the generalization of the Born solutions describing fields of two particles with hyperbolic motion in flat spacetime. In the limit Lambda -> 0, the Born solutions are retrieved. Since in the de Sitter universe the infinities I^+- are spacelike, the radiative properties of the fields depend on the way in which a given point of I^+- is approached. The fields must involve both retarded and advanced effects: Purely retarded fields do not satisfy the constraints at the past infinity I^-.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, RevTeX; Slightly expanded version of the paper published in Physical Review Letters. 15Nitrogen transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants in multi-species grassland

    Get PDF
This study investigates the N transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants, grasses, legumes and herbs in a temperate grassland. In a field experiment white clover (Trifolium repens), red clover (Trifolium pratense) and lucerne (Medicago sativa) were leaf-labelled with 15N enriched urea. The 15N tracer was measured in above-ground plant tissue of eight neighbouring plants in two subsequent harvests in 2008. The three legumes donated 15N to all neighbouring plants, of which grasses, white and red clover were strong receivers. Results show that N transfer increases with N application and from the 1st to the 2nd cut

Keynesian economics and the Oslo School

    Get PDF
The economic crisis of the 1930’s hit Norway when Ragnar Frisch returned from the US to accept a professorship at University of Oslo. On his return he wrote newspaper articles proposing tax relief and monetary policies to fight the economic crisis. Frisch abandoned his monetary policies and developed his Oslo School emphasising mathematical models, econometrics, national accounts, and detailed state governance. For the next four decades this School dominated economic policy in Norway where market forces had been substituted with administrative decision making. Keynes, with his General Theory, pointed out that a market economy with an active government can secure full employment. When the ideas of the Oslo School were challenged at the end of the 1970’s, by academics and through the poor performance of the economy, it collapsed. A decentralised market economy was reintroduced and The Keynesian paradigm emerged as the preferred theory compared to the approach of the Oslo School.
