    A learning algorithm for visual pose estimation of continuum robots

    Continuum robots offer significant advantages for surgical intervention due to their down-scalability, dexterity, and structural flexibility. While structural compliance offers a passive way to guard against trauma, it necessitates robust methods for online estimation of the robot configuration in order to enable precise position and manipulation control. In this paper, we address the pose estimation problem by applying a novel mapping of the robot configuration to a feature descriptor space using stereo vision. We generate a mapping of known features through a supervised learning algorithm that relates the feature descriptor to known ground truth. Features are represented in a reduced sub-space, which we call eigen-features. The descriptor provides some robustness to occlusions, which are inherent to surgical environments, and the methodology that we describe can be applied to multi-segment continuum robots for closed-loop control. Experimental validation on a single-segment continuum robot demonstrates the robustness and efficacy of the algorithm for configuration estimation.     Characterization of three \u3ci\u3eChlorella sorokiniana\u3c/i\u3e strains in anaerobic digested effluent from cattle manure

    Chlorella sorokiniana CS-01, UTEX 1230 and UTEX 2714 were maintained in 10% anaerobic digester effluent (ADE) from cattle manure digestion and compared with algal cultivation in Bold’s Basal Medium (BBM). Biomass of CS-01 and UTEX 1230 in ADE produced similar or greater than 280 mg/L after 21 days in BBM, however, UTEX 2714 growth in ADE was suppressed by more than 50% demonstrating a significant species bias to synthetic compared to organic waste-based media. The highest accumulation of protein and starch was exhibited in UTEX 1230 in ADE yielding 34% and 23% ash free dry weight (AFDW), respectively, though fatty acid methyl ester total lipid measured less than 12% AFDW. Results suggest that biomass from UTEX 1230 in ADE may serve as a candidate alga and growth system combination sustainable for animal feed production considering high yields of protein, starch and low lipid accumulation

    Recruitment Strategies for Caregivers of Children with Mental Health Problems

    PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe strategies for recruiting participants into an intervention study that focused on improving problem-solving skills in caregivers of children with mental health problems. BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children with mental health problems report feeling physically and psychologically overwhelmed and have high rates of depression because of the demands of caregiving. Research on the needs of these caregivers and interventions to ameliorate their stress is needed. However, recruiting this population can be particularly difficult because of the stigma of mental illness. Available literature on recruitment of caregivers of persons with physical illness cannot be transferred to caregivers of children with mental health problems because of the different caregiving situations. There is a need to identify effective recruitment strategies to reduce cost and answer research questions. Clinical nurse specialists have the skills to facilitate the recruitment of research participants. We revised and expanded health system referrals, community outreach, and recruiting advertisement (ads). When these strategies did not increase recruitment, radio ads were used. The Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Utilization was selected as a guiding framework. OUTCOME: Radio ads were the most effective strategy for recruiting caregivers of children with mental health problems for this study. CONCLUSION: Recruitment was ultimately successful because we were flexible and made decisions consistent with the Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Utilization. IMPLICATIONS: Clinical nurse specialists who study this population of caregivers should really consider the use of radio ads and systematically track which recruitment strategies lead to the greatest number of participants screened, eligible, and enrolled into studies

    Problem-Solving Intervention for Caregivers of Children with Mental Health Problems

    Building Our Solutions and Connections (BOSC) focused on enhancing problem-solving skills (PSS) of primary caregivers of children with mental health problems. Aims were determining feasibility, acceptability, and effect size (ES) estimates for depression, burden, personal control, and PSS. Methods—Caregivers were randomized to BOSC (n=30) or wait-list control (WLC) groups (n=31). Data were collected at baseline, post-intervention, and 3 and 6 months post-intervention. Results—Three-months post-intervention, ES for burden and personal control were .07 and .08, respectively. ES for depressed caregivers for burden and personal control were 0.14 and 0.19, respectively. Conclusions—Evidence indicates that the intervention had desired effects

    Predicting Outcomes Among Adolescents With Disruptive Disorders Being Treated in a System of Care Program

    BACKGROUND: “Systems of care” are strengths-based approaches to treating adolescents and others with disruptive disorders. However, little is known about why some adolescents improve and others do not. OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in personal strengths and family functioning as predictors of behavioral and social functioning among adolescents with disruptive disorders who participated in a system of care program. DESIGN: Secondary analyses of data from 114 adolescents (12-17 years of age) with disruptive disorders and their caregivers who participated in the Dawn Project Evaluation Study. Caregivers completed in-depth interviews conducted by trained data collectors using standardized questionnaires. Baseline and 12- month data are reported here. RESULTS: Improvement in personal strengths was a significant predictor of improvement in adolescent behavioral and social functioning, controlling for demographics (p < .001). CONCLUSION: In adolescents with disruptive disorders, psychiatric nurses should focus on enhancing adolescents’ personal strengths to improve behavioral and social functioning

    Sustained Growth in Nebraska

    National Macroeconomic conditions are favorable for future expansion of income, employment, and revenue in Nebraska. In particular, the U.S. economy is now in the heart of an expansion expected to persist over the three year forecast period. The principal engine of growth will be a sustained expansion in private sector investment and consumption demand. However, the rate of growth in the national economy likely will be moderate rather than rapid. At least three factors will act to moderate growth. The first is higher energy prices. Rapid growth in global demand is expected to keep prices for oil and natural gas high at least into 2005. These higher energy prices will reduce the rate of growth in gross domestic product, and create a higher than normal risk that the economy could fall back into recession. However, the most likely outcome is that the economy will continue to expand at a moderate rate in 2005, and beyond. Federal policy trends also will moderate growth. Over the outlook period, Federal Reserve interest rate policy will gradually shift from pro-growth to neutral as the Fed raises interest rates over the next two years. The Federal Funds rate currently stands at 1.75 basis points and a neutral rate is typically in the range of 3 to 4 basis points. The third factor will be a marked decline in the rate of growth in federal spending. Federal spending growth averaged 9 percent annually from 2002 through 2004. Spending growth should decline substantially beginning in 2005 as part of efforts to reduce large annual federal budget deficits

    Nanoscale Phase Change Memory with Graphene Ribbon Electrodes

    Phase change memory (PCM) devices are known to reduce in power consumption as the bit volume and contact area of their electrodes are scaled down. Here, we demonstrate two types of low-power PCM devices with lateral graphene ribbon electrodes: one in which the graphene is patterned into narrow nanoribbons and the other where the phase change material is patterned into nanoribbons. The sharp graphene "edge" contacts enable switching with threshold voltages as low as ~3 V, low programming currents (<1 {\mu}A SET, <10 {\mu}A RESET) and ON/OFF ratios >100. Large-scale fabrication with graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition also enables the study of heterogeneous integration and that of variability for such nanomaterials and devices.Comment: submitted to Applied Physics Letter

    Natural history of Arabidopsis thaliana and oomycete symbioses

    Molecular ecology of plant–microbe interactions has immediate significance for filling a gap in knowledge between the laboratory discipline of molecular biology and the largely theoretical discipline of evolutionary ecology. Somewhere in between lies conservation biology, aimed at protection of habitats and the diversity of species housed within them. A seemingly insignificant wildflower called Arabidopsis thaliana has an important contribution to make in this endeavour. It has already transformed botanical research with deepening understanding of molecular processes within the species and across the Plant Kingdom; and has begun to revolutionize plant breeding by providing an invaluable catalogue of gene sequences that can be used to design the most precise molecular markers attainable for marker-assisted selection of valued traits. This review describes how A. thaliana and two of its natural biotrophic parasites could be seminal as a model for exploring the biogeography and molecular ecology of plant–microbe interactions, and specifically, for testing hypotheses proposed from the geographic mosaic theory of co-evolution
