    RF-dressed Rydberg atoms in hollow-core fibres

    The giant electro-optical response of Rydberg atoms manifests itself in the emergence of sidebands in the Rydberg excitation spectrum if the atom is exposed to a radio-frequency (RF) electric field. Here we report on the study of RF-dressed Rydberg atoms inside hollow-core photonic crystal fibres (HC-PCF), a system that enables the use of low modulation voltages and offers the prospect of miniaturised vapour-based electro-optical devices. Narrow spectroscopic features caused by the RF field are observed for modulation frequencies up to 500 MHz.This is the author accepted manuscript.     Intranasal oxytocin reduces provoked symptoms in female patients with posttraumatic stress disorder despite exerting sympathomimetic and positive chronotropic effects in a randomized controlled trial

    Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe psychiatric disease accompanied by neuroendocrine changes such as adrenergic overdrive and hence an elevated cardiovascular morbidity. Current pharmacotherapeutic options for PTSD are less than suboptimal, necessitating the development of PTSD-specific drugs. Although the neuropeptide oxytocin has been repeatedly suggested to be effective in PTSD treatment, there are, to our knowledge, only three studies that have assessed its efficacy on the intensity of PTSD symptoms in PTSD patients - among them one symptom provocation study in male veterans. Methods: To evaluate for the first time how oxytocin influences the intensity of provoked PTSD symptoms and, furthermore, cardiac control in female PTSD patients, we assessed their psychic and cardiac response to trauma-script exposure with and without oxytocin pretreatment in a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled study. We used a within-subject design to study 35 female PTSD patients who received oxytocin and placebo in a 2-week interval. Furthermore, we performed a small pilot study to get an idea of the relation of the stress-modulated endogenous oxytocin levels and heart rate - we correlated oxytocin serum levels with the heart rate of 10 healthy individuals before and after exposure to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Results: Intranasal oxytocin treatment was followed by a reduction of provoked total PTSD symptoms, in particular of avoidance, and by an elevation in baseline and maximum heart rate together with a drop in the pre-ejection period, a marker for sympathetic cardiac control. Furthermore, we found a positive correlation between endogenous oxytocin levels and heart rate both before and after TSST challenge in healthy control subjects. Conclusions: This study provides the first evidence that oxytocin treatment reduces the intensity of provoked PTSD symptoms in female PTSD patients. The small size of both samples and the heterogeneity of the patient sample restrict the generalizability of our findings. Future studies have to explore the gender dependency and the tolerability of the oxytocin- mediated increase in heart rate

    Automatic guiding of the primary image of solar Gregory telescopes

    The primary image reflected from the field-stop of solar Gregory telescopes is used for automatic guiding. This new system avoids temporal varying influences from the bending of the telescope tube by the main mirror's gravity and from offsets between the telescope and a separate guiding refractor. The required stiffness of the guider mechanics and the small areas of the sensors demand small f-numbers for the guider optics, which cause problems with the image quality and with heat. Problems also arise from the imaging of the pinhole in the telescope's field stop. The corresponding lack of image information at that location can be reduced numerically by Fourier methods much more effectively than with profile centering methods. Several types of such guiders are tested, a final equipment, now installed at the Gregory telescopes at Tenerife and at Locarno, is described

    The exceptionally large polarizability of highly excited Rydberg atoms-six orders of magnitude higher than ground-state atoms--makes them of great interest in fields such as quantum optics, quantum computing, quantum simulation and metrology. However, if they are to be used routinely in applications, a major requirement is their integration into technically feasible, miniaturized devices. Here we show that a Rydberg medium based on room temperature caesium vapour can be confined in broadband-guiding kagome-style hollow-core photonic crystal fibres. Three-photon spectroscopy performed on a caesium-filled fibre detects Rydberg states up to a principal quantum number of n=40. Besides small energy-level shifts we observe narrow lines confirming the coherence of the Rydberg excitation. Using different Rydberg states and core diameters we study the influence of confinement within the fibre core after different exposure times. Understanding these effects is essential for the successful future development of novel applications based on integrated room temperature Rydberg systems

    The effect of basic fibroblast growth factor on the blood flow and morphologic features of a latissimus dorsi cardiomyoplasty

    AbstractPrevious studies designed to determine whether latissimus cardiomyoplasty could be used to revascularize ischemic myocardium showed that after operation the latissimus was ischemic and had severely deteriorated. This study was undertaken to determine whether basic fibroblast growth factor, a potent angiogenic peptide, would improve the vascularity of the latissimus and enhance collateral formation between the muscle of the cardiomyoplasty and ischemic myocardium. In goats, myocardial ischemia was induced with an ameroid constrictor and cardiomyoplasty performed. The latissimus was continuously stimulated electrically at 2 Hz for 6 weeks and given four weekly bolus injections of human recombinant basic fibroblast growth factor (80 μg infused into the left subclavian artery). In eight animals, rates of regional blood flow were measured and both the heart and latissimus were evaluated histochemically. The latissimus blood flow rate was 0.114 ± 0.029 ml/gm per minute, which was three times greater than that of historical controls (chronically stimulated latissimus cardiomyoplasty without basic fibroblast growth factor treatment; 0.042 ± 0.007 ml/gm per minute, p < 0.05). Associated with the improved blood flow, there was significantly less evidence of skeletal muscle fiber dropout and muscle fibrosis in the animals treated with basic fibroblast growth factor. Latissimus-derived collateral flow to ischemic myocardium developed in five of the eight goats and averaged 0.288 ± 0.075 ml/gm per minute. This flow was 42.8% ± 15.7% ( n = 5) of the flow required by normal myocardium (which was 0.728 ± 0.095 ml/gm per minute). This value for latissimus-derived collateral blood flow was almost twice that of the historical controls (24.0% ± 3.9%), but the increase did not achieve statistical significance ( p = 0.08). These results hold the promise that basic fibroblast growth factor treatment might enhance the formation of extramyocardial collaterals to the heart and improve skeletal muscle function.     Economics of education research: a review and future prospects

    In this paper we offer an appraisal of the economics of education research area, charting its history as a field and discussing the ways in which economists have contributed both to education research and to education policy-making. In particular, we highlight the theoretical and methodological contributions that economists have made to the field of education during the last 50 years. Despite the success of the economics of education as a field of inquiry, we argue that some of the contributions made by economists could be limited if the economics of education is seen as quite distinct from the other disciplines working in the field of education. In these areas of common interest, economists need to work side by side with the other major disciplines in the field of education if their contribution to the field is to be maximised, particularly in terms of applying improved methodology. We conclude that the study of education acquisition and its economic and social impact in the economics of education research area is very likely to remain a fertile research ground. Acknowledgement

    Brane Induced Gravity, its Ghost and the Cosmological Constant Problem

    "Brane Induced Gravity" is regarded as a promising framework for addressing the cosmological constant problem, but it also suffers from a ghost instability for parameter values that make it phenomenologically viable. We carry out a detailed analysis of codimension > 2 models employing gauge invariant variables in a flat background approximation. It is argued that using instead a curved background sourced by the brane would not resolve the ghost issue, unless a very specific condition is satisfied (if satisfiable at all). As for other properties of the model, from an explicit analysis of the 4-dimensional graviton propagator we extract a mass, a decay width and a momentum dependent modification of the gravitational coupling for the spin 2 mode. In the flat space approximation, the mass of the problematic spin 0 ghost is instrumental in filtering out a brane cosmological constant. The mass replaces a background curvature that would have had the same function. The optical theorem is used to demonstrate the suppression of graviton leakage into the uncompactified bulk. Then, we derive the 4-dimensional effective action for gravity and show that general covariance is spontaneously broken by the bulk-brane setup. This provides a natural realization of the gravitational Higgs mechanism.     Truncating first-order Dyson-Schwinger equations in Coulomb-Gauge Yang-Mills theory

    The non-perturbative domain of QCD contains confinement, chiral symmetry breaking, and the bound state spectrum. For the calculation of the latter, the Coulomb gauge is particularly well-suited. Access to these non-perturbative properties should be possible by means of the Green's functions. However, Coulomb gauge is also very involved, and thus hard to tackle. We introduce a novel BRST-type operator r, and show that the left-hand side of Gauss' law is r-exact. We investigate a possible truncation scheme of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in first-order formalism for the propagators based on an instantaneous approximation. We demonstrate that this is insufficient to obtain solutions with the expected property of a linear-rising Coulomb potential.
