A Comparison of the Intrinsic Shapes of Two Different Types of Dwarf Galaxies: Blues Compact Dwarfs and Dwarf Ellipticals

    Get PDF
We measure the apparent shapes for a sample of 62 blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCDs), and compare them with the apparent shapes for a sample of 80 dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs). The BCDs are flatter, on average, than the dEs, but the difference is only marginally significant. We then use both non-parametric and parametric techniques to determine possible distributions of intrinsic shapes for the BCDs. The hypothesis that BCDs are oblate spheroids can be ruled out with a high confidence level (>99> 99%), but the hypothesis that they are prolate spheroids cannot be excluded. The apparent shapes of BCDs are totally consistent with the hypothesis that they are triaxial ellipsoids. If the intrinsic axis ratios, β\beta and γ\gamma, are distributed according to a Gaussian with means β0\beta_0 and γ0\gamma_0 and standard deviation σ\sigma, we find the best-fitting distribution for BCDs has (β0,γ0,σ)=(0.66,0.55,0.16)(\beta_0,\gamma_0,\sigma)= (0.66,0.55,0.16), while that for dEs has (β0,γ0,σ)=(0.85,0.64,0.24)(\beta_0,\gamma_0,\sigma)= (0.85,0.64,0.24). Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that BCDs have a close evolutionary relation with dEs.Comment: total 23 pages, 9 figures, and 1 Table, submitted to ApJ on Sep 19 1997. UBVI Surface Photometry of the Spiral Galaxy NGC 300 in the Sculptor Group

We present UBVI surface photometry for 20.'5 X 20.'5 area of a late-type spiral galaxy NGC 300. In order to understand the morphological properties and luminosity distribution characteristics of NGC 300, we have derived isophotal maps, surface brightness profiles, ellipticity profiles, position angle profiles, and color profiles. By merging the I-band data of our surface brightness measurements with those of Boeker et al. (2002) based on Hubble Space Telescope observations, we have made combined I-band surface brightness profiles for the region of 0."02 < r < 500" and decomposed the profiles into three components: a nucleus, a bulge, and an exponential disk.Comment: 16 pages(cjaa209.sty), Accepted by the Chinese J. Suppression of stored-beam oscillation and observation of flux improvement during top-up injection

    Get PDF
This paper describes a start-to-end study of the suppression of stored-beam oscillation during top-up injection at the Pohang Light Source (PLS-II) beam line. The fast counterkicker implemented in PLS-II suppresses stored-beam oscillations in the vertical plane. During top-up injection in the magnetic spectroscopy beam line of PLS-II, flux improvement due to the suppression of stored-beam oscillation was clearly observed.11Ysciescopu

LHC Crab Cavity Coupler Test Boxes

    Get PDF
The LHC double quarter wave (DQW) crab cavities have two different types of Higher Order Mode (HOM) couplers in addition to a fundamental power coupler (FPC). The FPC requires conditioning, so to achieve this we have designed a radio-frequency (RF) quarter wave resonator to provide high transmission between two opposing FPCs. For the HOM couplers we must ensure that the stop-band filter is positioned at the cavity frequency and that peak transmission occurs at the same frequencies as the strongest HOMs. We have designed two test boxes which preserve the cavity spectral response in order to test the couplers

Evidence for the decay B0->eta pi^0

We report a search for the charmless hadronic decay B0ηπ0B^0\to\eta \pi^0 with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 694 fb1\rm fb^{-1} containing 753×106753\times10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs. The data were collected by the Belle experiment running on the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance at the KEKB e+ee^+e^- collider. We measure a branching fraction B(B0ηπ0)=(4.11.50.7+1.7+0.5)×107\mathcal{B}(B^0\to\eta\pi^0)=(4.1^{+1.7+0.5}_{-1.5-0.7})\times 10^{-7}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Our measurement gives an upper limit of B(B0ηπ0)<6.5×107\mathcal{B}(B^0\to\eta\pi^0)<6.5\times 10^{-7} at 90\% confidence level. The signal has a significance of 3.03.0 standard deviations and constitutes the first evidence for this decay mode.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physical Review D(R

A Metabolomic Approach to the Study of Wine Micro-Oxygenation

    Get PDF
Wine micro-oxygenation is a globally used treatment and its effects were studied here by analysing by untargeted LC-MS the wine metabolomic fingerprint. Eight different procedural variations, marked by the addition of oxygen (four levels) and iron (two levels) were applied to Sangiovese wine, before and after malolactic fermentation

“We’re just stuck in a daily routine”:Implications of the temporal dimensions, demands and dispositions of mothering for leisure time physical activity

    Get PDF
The reduced physical activity of women when they become mothers is a public health priority. Existing studies show that mothers have little time for leisure, or time that is fragmented and requiring negotiation with others. However, the temporal features of mothering are undertheorised and qualitative studies tend to focus on how mothers can skilfully construct physically active identities and balance societal expectations about being a "good mother". In line with other research that focuses on the configuration of everyday practices that condition the "possibilities" for health-related practices like physical activity, we shift our focus away from the resisting capacities of mothers to the temporal features of mothering practices. We interrogate the lived experiences of 15 mothers of preschool children in deprived urban areas and illuminate the inherent temporal dimensions, demands and dispositions of mothering practices that condition the possibility of leisure time physical activity being undertaken. Together, these temporal features mean mothering practices can readily work against leisure time physical activity. The focus on the mothering practices rather than mothers brings a novel perspective for developing public health policy designed to support mothers into regular leisure time physical activity

Working Memory Impairment in Fibromyalgia Patients Associated with Altered Frontoparietal Memory Network

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a disorder characterized by chronic widespread pain and frequently associated with other symptoms. Patients with FM commonly report cognitive complaints, including memory problem. The objective of this study was to investigate the differences in neural correlates of working memory between FM patients and healthy subjects, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Nineteen FM patients and 22 healthy subjects performed an n-back memory task during MRI scan. Functional MRI data were analyzed using within- and between-group analysis. Both activated and deactivated brain regions during n-back task were evaluated. In addition, to investigate the possible effect of depression and anxiety, group analysis was also performed with depression and anxiety level in terms of Beck depression inventory (BDI) and Beck anxiety inventory (BAI) as a covariate. Between-group analyses, after controlling for depression and anxiety level, revealed that within the working memory network, inferior parietal cortex was strongly associated with the mild (r = 0.309, P = 0.049) and moderate (r = 0.331, P = 0.034) pain ratings. In addition, between-group comparison revealed that within the working memory network, the left DLPFC, right VLPFC, and right inferior parietal cortex were associated with the rating of depression and anxiety? CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our results suggest that the working memory deficit found in FM patients may be attributable to differences in neural activation of the frontoparietal memory network and may result from both pain itself and depression and anxiety associated with pain
