One-dimensional classical adjoint SU(2) Coulomb Gas
The equation of state of a one-dimensional classical nonrelativistic Coulomb
gas of particles in the adjoint representation of SU(2) is given. The problem
is solved both with and without sources in the fundamental representation at
either end of the system. The gas exhibits confining properties at low
densities and temperatures and deconfinement in the limit of high densities and
temperatures. However, there is no phase transition to a regime where the
string tension vanishes identically; true deconfinement only happens for
infinite densities and temperatures. In the low density, low temperature limit,

Energy Density of Vortices in the Schroedinger Picture
The one-loop energy density of an infinitely thin static magnetic vortex in
SU(2) Yang-Mills theory is evaluated using the Schroedinger picture. Both the
gluonic fluctuations as well as the quarks in the vortex background are
included. The energy density of the magnetic vortex is discussed as a function
of the magnetic flux. The center vortices correspond to local minima in the
effective potential. These minima are degenerated with the perturbative vacuum
if the fermions are ignored. Inclusion of fermions lifts this degeneracy,
raising the vortex energy above the energy of the perturbative vacuum.Comment: 25 pages, 2 figure
An accuracy assessment of Magellan Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI)
Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) measurements of the Magellan spacecraft's angular position and velocity were made during July through September, 1989, during the spacecraft's heliocentric flight to Venus. The purpose of this data acquisition and reduction was to verify this data type for operational use before Magellan is inserted into Venus orbit, in August, 1990. The accuracy of these measurements are shown to be within 20 nanoradians in angular position, and within 5 picoradians/sec in angular velocity. The media effects and their calibrations are quantified; the wet fluctuating troposphere is the dominant source of measurement error for angular velocity. The charged particle effect is completely calibrated with S- and X-Band dual-frequency calibrations. Increasing the accuracy of the Earth platform model parameters, by using VLBI-derived tracking station locations consistent with the planetary ephemeris frame, and by including high frequency Earth tidal terms in the Earth rotation model, add a few nanoradians improvement to the angular position measurements. Angular velocity measurements were insensitive to these Earth platform modelling improvements
Writhe of center vortices and topological charge -- an explicit example
The manner in which continuum center vortices generate topological charge
density is elucidated using an explicit example. The example vortex
world-surface contains one lone self-intersection point, which contributes a
quantum 1/2 to the topological charge. On the other hand, the surface in
question is orientable and thus must carry global topological charge zero due
to general arguments. Therefore, there must be another contribution, coming
from vortex writhe. The latter is known for the lattice analogue of the example
vortex considered, where it is quite intuitive. For the vortex in the
continuum, including the limit of an infinitely thin vortex, a careful analysis
is performed and it is shown how the contribution to the topological charge

Effects of Violent Video Game Exposure on Aggressive Behavior, Aggressive thought Accessibility, and Aggressive Affect among Adults with and without Autism Spectrum Disorder
Recent mass shootings have prompted the idea among some members of the public that exposure to violent video games can have a pronounced effect on individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Empirical evidence for or against this claim currently is absent. To address this issue, adults with and without ASD were assigned to play a violent or nonviolent version of a customized first-person shooter video game, after which responses on three aggression-related outcome variables (aggressive behavior, aggressive thought accessibility, and aggressive affect) were assessed. Results showed strong evidence that adults with ASD are not differentially affected by acute exposure to violent video games compared to typically developing adults. Moreover, model comparisons showed modest evidence against any effect of violent game content whatsoever. Findings from the current experiment suggest that societal concerns over whether violent game exposure has a unique effect on adults with autism are not supported by evidence
The impact of violent video games on executive functioning and aggression

Bartholow.M.A. University of Missouri--Columbia 2010.Previous research suggests a causal link between violent video games and aggression (Anderson; 2004; Anderson & Bushman, 2001), but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, even-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 83 undergraduates who were randomly assigned to play a nonviolent or violent video game for 20 min prior to completing a go/no-go spatial Stroop task and an impulsive aggression task. Task order was manipulated between subjects. Results showed that, relative to nonviolent video game participants, violent video game participants had difficulty with cognitive control, but only after an intervening aggression task. Violent video games also caused increases in post-game aggressive behaviors, but only for dispositionally angry and low executive functioning (EF) participants. Trait aggressiveness also was found to moderate the relationship between violent video game exposure and both evaluative and regulatory control. These findings underscore the importance of individual differences in understanding violent media effects on both aggression and neurocognitive function.Includes bibliographical references

Nucleon electromagnetic form factors from lattice QCD using a nearly physical pion mass
We present lattice QCD calculations of nucleon electromagnetic form factors
using pion masses = 149, 202, and 254 MeV and an action with
clover-improved Wilson quarks coupled to smeared gauge fields, as used by the
Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal collaboration. Particular attention is given to
removal of the effects of excited state contamination by calculation at three
source-sink separations and use of the summation and generalized
pencil-of-function methods. The combination of calculation at the nearly
physical mass = 149 MeV in a large spatial volume ( = 4.2)
and removal of excited state effects yields agreement with experiment for the
electric and magnetic form factors and up to = 0.5

Topological Susceptibility of Yang-Mills Center Projection Vortices
The topological susceptibility induced by center projection vortices
extracted from SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills configurations via the maximal center
gauge is measured. Two different smoothing procedures, designed to eliminate
spurious ultraviolet fluctuations of these vortices before evaluating the
topological charge, are explored. They result in consistent estimates of the
topological susceptibility carried by the physical thick vortices
characterizing the Yang-Mills vacuum in the vortex picture. This susceptibility
is comparable to the one obtained from the full lattice Yang-Mills
configurations. The topological properties of the SU(2) Yang-Mills vacuum can
