Phytoextraction potential of wheat and study on the applicable ratio of converter sludgein some soil-sludge mixtures
Converter sludge is a by-product of the “steel industry”, at the wet cleaning process of the converter gas. The sludge might contain heavy metal oxides, more particularly of lead- (Pb) and zinc (Zn) oxides. Our aim is to investigate the accumulation ratio of these components within the different parts of some selected plants during the potential phytoremediation, phytoextraction processes. The investigation was implemented with the collaboration of students, who gained practical knowledge in sample preparation, analysis and data evaluation. The gained knowledge is a good complement to what the students have been learned in higher education and provides useful practical insights into environmental analysis. For the preparation of the laboratory experiment of this research, we made seedling growth tests with white mustard (Sinapis alba) seeds on the 20-40-60-80% mixtures of converter sludge and different kinds of soils. According to the germination results we determined that the most capable mixtures were the converter sludge and the loess mixtures. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) was chosen as a test plant for the experiments. The mixing ratio of the converter sludge was 5-10-15-20-25%. The metal content of the sludge-soil mixtures and the different parts of the wheat plants (shoot, root) were analyzed by XRF instrument. The results showed that the most effective and tolerable ratio of converter sludge can be the 10 and 15% in loamy soil mixtures. Wheat plants seem to be applicable on decreasing of the metal content from the sludge-soil mixtures. The decreasing average ratio was 50 % for Pb, 53 % for Zn, at using the lowest applied ratio into the soils. Further aim is to find other potential industrial plants for decreasing of the ratio toxic elements from the converter sludge
Effect of industrial sludge-soil mixtures on germination of white mustard and wheat
Many industrial process produce different kind of sludge as by-product. Those various sludge-types can contain heavy metals or other valuable or reusable elements (as rare-earth metals). Our aim is to determine the accumulation rate of these elements in the plant-tissues and establish the phytoremediaton potential of the plants. Laboratory experiment was conducted in seedling growth tests with various mixtures of red mud, converter sludge and different soil-type-peat mixtures. White mustard (Sinapis alba) and wheat (Triticum aestivum) seeds were applied for the experiments. According to these tests we determined that among the mixtures the most capable ones were the red mud mixed with slightly saline or slightly acidic brown forest soils. In case of the converter sludge, mixtures with chernozem and loess soil showed the best results for germination. The presence of the used sludge-types could stimulate the germination of seeds and the growth of plumules of plants, however the results are highly depends on the type of the soils. The results highlight the importance of seedling tests in determining the phytoextraction possibility when using industrial waste materials, such as the tested sludge-types
A kutatás mintaterületének Veszprém megyét választottuk. A megye éghajlata a viszonylag kis területi kiterjedése ellenére igen sokszínű.

Determining the Restoration Potential of an Urban River Reach Along Zagyva River, Hungary
When planning the restoration of rivers, different conditions and needs require different solutions, which is highlighted in the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC). These differences must be taken into account in the protection and restoration of our rivers.
Research about the determination of the restoration or rehabilitation potential of rivers has been focused mostly on rural river reaches, but it would be important to place greater emphasis on the restoration of urban river reaches. In the case of rivers in urban areas, in addition to supporting, regulating, and provisioning ecosystem services, cultural ecosystem services are also particularly important – such as recreational opportunities, tourist significance, or aesthetic value. Thus, in addition to the environmental benefits, the social benefits also confirm the importance of restoring urban rivers.
The present research aims to develop an evaluation methodology for river reaches related to urban areas, which interprets and determines the restoration potential in relation to restoration goals. The most common goals related to the restoration of urban rivers have been defined, and the criteria for determining the restoration potential have been developed for each goal. To determine the need for restoration, criteria related to condition were used, such as hydromorphological and ecological features in the riverbed, bank and floodplain (e.g., pavements, morphological features, vegetation features), water quality, presence of pollutants, recreational characteristics (e.g., intensity of human use, view of the river, existing recreational infrastructure). To determine the possibilities, criteria about limiting factors were analyzed, including the width of the floodplain, the presence of artificial facilities, current and planned land use. Information from field surveys as well as available databases and GIS data were used for the evaluation.
The need (condition) and possibilities (limiting factors) of the restoration were assessed together for each goal in river sections. As a result of the method, river sections with different restoration potential can be identified, and the territorial priorities of different restoration goals can be assessed. The criteria system of the method can be used on other rivers, even in other countries, but the assessment should take into account the reference characteristics / target condition of the given river reach, which may differ. The results of the research can help in the preliminary planning of the restoration of urban rivers. The method allows for the territorial delimitation of individual restoration goals and the joint assessment of the need and possibilities for restoration
Vanádium-pentoxid nanorészecskék alkalmazása festék szennyeződések vizes oldatból történő eltávolítására: Vanadium Pentoxide Nanoparticles for Removal of Dyes from Aqueous Solutions
Dyestuff discharges to water from different industries like leather, dyes manufacturing and organic materials have negative effect to human health and his environment. Researchers used different techniques to remove dyes from water like chemical oxidation, membrane separation, coagulation /flocculation, and ion exchange. One of the best and cost effective techniques is the adsorption. In our research, vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) was used as nanoadsorbent material for removal of methylene blue (MB) from water. V2O5 nanoparticles were prepared using of NH4VO5 as parent material and suitable surfactant was used. V2O5 nanoparticles were annealed at 450 °C. V2O5 nanoparticles was characterized using different techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) techniques were used to study the surface chemistry of the nano particles. Atomic force microscopic (AFM), thermal gravimetric (TG) methods recognized the decomposition steps and nanosize of the prepared nanoadsorbent. Fourier transform spectrometry (FTIR) was used to investigate the structure of the nano-materials. V2O5 nanoadsorbents were used for MB removal from water. The adsorption procedures for MB removal from water using V2O5 have been done using the following conditions: shaking rate 250 rpm, reaction time 0 to 60 min, and MB concentration 2 mg/litter, at 25 °C. UV/Visible spectrophotometer was used to study the removal efficiency of methylene blue from water. V2O5 annealed at 450 °C exhibited the highest removal efficiency, 91 % after 40 min contact time as compared with V2O5 nanoparticles as prepared.

Enhanced Pollution Removal with Heat Reclamation in a Small Hungarian Wastewater Treatment Plant
The aim of the research is to outline the possibilities of utilizing waste heat in small municipal wastewater treatment plants. The facility, which was chosen as case-study, accepts about 2,300 m3 of raw sewage daily. In wintertime the wastewater temperature decreases to 10-14 °C which results in lower nitrification capacity based on measurement and validated model results. The excess heat of the wastewater would serve to increase the temperature of the aeration tank in order to enhance the microbiological activity and thus the efficiency of pollutant removal. The amount of reusable waste heat is calculated and with the help of dynamic simulation the effluent quality was determined to compare
it with the original results. Increasing the temperature by 6 °C in the aerated tank, ammonium removal could be improved by 61%. This way not only the heat, but the nutrient pollution could be mitigated, too
Algebrai geometria és határterületei = Algebraic geometry and related fields
| Our research remained faithful to the interdisciplinary spirit of the proposal, and blended the research area of algebraic geometry with techniques from other fields. We succeeded in computing the Heegaard-Floer homology of the link of complex normal algebraic surface singularities, and defined new invariants for them called weighted roots. We also achieved progress on the topological characterization of complex projective plane curves. We established a Riemann-Roch formula for complex algebraic threefolds with canonical cyclic singularities, and used it to construct new Calabi-Yau threefolds. We showed that loop spaces of a rationally connected compex projective manifold are again rationally connected. In arithmetic geometry our main result is a duality theorem between the Tate-Shafarevich group of a 1-motive defined over a number field and that of the dual 1-motive. We gave also applications of our duality theorems to the study of rational points on principal homogeneous spaces under semi-abelian varieties. In invariant theory we found explicit generators and relations for the subalgebra of cocommutative elements in the FRT bialgebras associated with the quantum coordinate rings of general linear, orthogonal and symplectic groups, and constructed new quantum quasi-homogeneous spaces
Algebrai geometria és határterületei = Algebraic Geometry and Its Neighbouring Fields
A kutatás a pályázatban vázolt interdiszciplináris jellegnek megfelelően a szigorúan vett algebrai geometriai problematikát és módszereket ötvözte más területek technikáival. Különösen jelentős eredmények születtek a szingularitás-elméletben, ahol topológiai módszereket is használtunk, a számelmélet inspirálta aritmetikai geometriai kérdések terén, illetve az algebrai csoporthatások és invariánsaik vizsgálatában. A szingularitás-elmélet területén több új mutéti formulát bizonyítottunk. | Following the interdisciplinary character outlined in our proposal, in our research we have combined problems and methods in algebraic geometry with techniques from neighbouring fields. We have achieved particularly important results in singularity theory where we have also used topological methods, on questions inspired by number theory and in the study of algebraic group actions and their invariants. In singularity theory we have established several new surgery formulas. We have used one of them to prove the Seiberg-Witten invariant conjecture and the Neumann-Wahl conjecture for singularities of splice type. We have described the boundary of the Milnor fiber of a non-isolated complex surface singularity by means of plumbing diagrams. We have also achieved progress in the topological classification of rational complex algebraic plane curves. In arithmetic geometry we have managed to answer a question that has been open for more than 25 years concerning the local-global principle for rational points on homogeneous spaces of semi-abelian varieties. We have also made progress towards Grothendieck's Section Conjecture. In invariant theory we have given a finite presentation with explicit generators and relations for the algebra of polynomial invariants in many variables of certain complex reflection groups
