    Dynamics in Clays - Combining Neutron Scattering and Microscopic Simulation

    International audienceMobility of ions and water in clays is at the heart of their remarkable properties of water retention and ion-exchange. It has been addressed here using two microscopic techniques: neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulations. Neutron scattering gives access exclusively to water dynamics in clays, due to the exceptional sensitivity of neutrons to H atoms. The data interpretation can be challenging, especially for natural clays such as montmorillonite, with inhomogeneous swelling characteristics. A great improvement is achieved with the use of synthetic materials, as demonstrated here on the case of synthetic (fluoro)hectorite. The standard analytical models for long-range diffusive motion, isotropic translation and its derivative, powder averaged two dimensional translation, have been used to interpret the neutron scattering data. They both agree on the order of magnitude for the diffusion coefficient of water in monohydrated and bihydrated clays, 10−10 m2s−1 and 10−9 m2s−1 respectively. While the two-dimensional nature of water diffusion in clays is seen clearly from molecular dynamics simulations, its signature in neutron scattering data is obscured by the powder-averaging of the signal. A novel method, based on a multi-resolution analysis of scattering functions from powder samples, allows never-the-less a clear determination of the dimensionality of water motion in the system. Extracting information on local water motion is difficult on the basis of neutron scattering data only. Various models for localised motion, rotation on a sphere or jump diffusion, have been proposed and used to interpret the observed neutron data, however their applicability is questionable in light of information from molecular dynamics simulations. Aside from aiding the interpretation of neutron scattering data, MD simulations are most valuable in providing information on the behaviour of ions in clays. MD estimates the interlayer ion coefficients as of the some order of magnitude as water, even if the details of ionic motion are strikingly different between the two ions considered here, Na+ and Cs+. Further, MD has also allowed to address the topic of ion exchange between clay interlayers and bulk aqueous solution. The microscopic picture of water and ion motion in clays, emerging from neutron scattering and MD simulations, should be treated as a building block of the overall modelling of macroscopic transport in clays, the ultimate property of interest for many clay applications

    A vision transformer-based framework for knowledge transfer from multi-modal to mono-modal lymphoma subtyping models

    Determining lymphoma subtypes is a crucial step for better patients treatment targeting to potentially increase their survival chances. In this context, the existing gold standard diagnosis method, which is based on gene expression technology, is highly expensive and time-consuming making difficult its accessibility. Although alternative diagnosis methods based on IHC (immunohistochemistry) technologies exist (recommended by the WHO), they still suffer from similar limitations and are less accurate. WSI (Whole Slide Image) analysis by deep learning models showed promising new directions for cancer diagnosis that would be cheaper and faster than existing alternative methods. In this work, we propose a vision transformer-based framework for distinguishing DLBCL (Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma) cancer subtypes from high-resolution WSIs. To this end, we propose a multi-modal architecture to train a classifier model from various WSI modalities. We then exploit this model through a knowledge distillation mechanism for efficiently driving the learning of a mono-modal classifier. Our experimental study conducted on a dataset of 157 patients shows the promising performance of our mono-modal classification model, outperforming six recent methods from the state-of-the-art dedicated for cancer classification. Moreover, the power-law curve, estimated on our experimental data, shows that our classification model requires a reasonable number of additional patients for its training to potentially reach identical diagnosis accuracy as IHC technologies

    Unveiling Candida albicans intestinal carriage in healthy volunteers: the role of micro- and mycobiota, diet, host genetics and immune response

However, little is known about the host factors that influence colonization densities. We investigated how microbiota, host lifestyle factors, and genetics could shape C. albicans intestinal carriage in 695 healthy individuals from the Milieu Intérieur cohort. C. albicans intestinal carriage was detected in 82.9% of the subjects using quantitative PCR. Using linear mixed models and multiway-ANOVA, we explored C. albicans intestinal levels with regard to gut microbiota composition and lifestyle factors including diet. By analyzing shotgun metagenomics data and C. albicans qPCR data, we showed that Intestinimonas butyriciproducens was the only gut microbiota species whose relative abundance was negatively correlated with C. albicans concentration. Diet is also linked to C. albicans growth, with eating between meals and a low-sodium diet being associated with higher C. albicans levels. Furthermore, by Genome-Wide Association Study, we identified 26 single nucleotide polymorphisms suggestively associated with C. albicans colonization. In addition, we found that the intestinal levels of C. albicans might influence the host immune response, specifically in response to fungal challenge. We analyzed the transcriptional levels of 546 immune genes and the concentration of 13 cytokines after whole blood stimulation with C. albicans cells and showed positive associations between the extent of C. albicans intestinal levels and NLRP3 expression, as well as secreted IL-2 and CXCL5 concentrations.     Experimental Evidence of Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem Violation in a Superspin Glass

    We present the experimental observation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) violation in an assembly of interacting magnetic nanoparticles in the low temperature superspin glass phase. The magnetic noise is measured with a two-dimension electron gas Hall probe and compared to the out of phase ac susceptibility of the same ferrofluid. For "intermediate" aging times of the order of 1 h, the ratio of the effective temperature TeffT_{\rm eff} to the bath temperature T grows from 1 to 6.5 when T is lowered from TgT_g to 0.3 TgT_g, regardless of the noise frequency. These values are comparable to those measured in an atomic spin glass as well as those calculated for a Heisenberg spin glass

    Does sex of the jockey influence racehorse physiology and performance

    The racing industry is supported by a predominance of female stablehands and work riders, but few become professional jockeys. Female jockeys have recently had notable race success. No study has assessed whether the sex of the rider may subtly influence racehorse physiology to affect performance. Here, using a validated exercise tracking system (the 'Equimetre'â„¢) that records many physiological parameters simultaneously, this study characterised racehorse cardiovascular (heart rate, heart rate recovery) and biomechanical (stride length and frequency) parameters at various exercise intensities (slow canter to hard gallop) to address the question whether any parameter varied according to sex of the rider. A total of 530 Thoroughbreds, varying in age (2-7 years old) and sex (including geldings), from one racing yard in Australia, completed a total of 3,568 exercise sessions, monitored by a single trainer, on varying track surfaces (sand, turf, or fibre). Different work riders,103 in total (male, n = 66; female, n = 37) of which n = 43 were current or past registered professional jockeys, participated in the study. Data were analysed using analysis of variation (ANOVA) or mixed-effect models, as appropriate. Sex of the rider did not influence (P > 0.05) racehorse speed nor stride length at any training intensity. Racehorse heart rate and peak heart rate increased with training intensity (P 0.05). Racehorse heart rate recovery was influenced by sex of the rider, but only at the extremes of the reversed, usual training intensity on each surface (e.g. heart rate after galloping on sand was significantly lower with male riders, P = 0.03). Finally, analysis of 52,464 race results indicated a similar chance of a top-three placing for male and female jockeys. In conclusion, this study, using objectively obtained data, demonstrates for the first time no overt effect of the rider's sex on racehorse physiology in training and performance in racing. Such data could encourage greater female participation in racing and improve access of female jockeys to better quality mounts in racing events

    Cardiovascular Fitness and Stride Acceleration in Race-Pace Workouts for the Prediction of Performance in Thoroughbreds

    In-training racehorse physiological data can be leveraged to further explore race-day performance prediction. To date, no large retrospective, observational study has analysed whether in-training speed and heart rate recovery can predict racehorse success. Speed (categorised as ‘slow’ to ‘fast’ according to the time taken to cover the last 600 m from a virtual finish line) and heart rate recovery (from gallop to 1 min after exercise) of flat racehorses (n = 485) of varying age, sex and type according to distance (e.g., sprinter, miler and stayer) were obtained using a fitness tracker from a single racing yard in Australia. Race-pace training sessions on turf comprised ‘fast gallop’ (n = 3418 sessions) or ‘jumpout’ (n = 1419). A posteriori racing information (n = 3810 races) for all 485 racehorses was extracted and combined with training data. Race performance was categorised as win/not-win or podium or not, each analysed by logistic regression. Colts (p < 0.001), stayers (p < 0.001) and being relatively fast over the last 600 m of a benchmark test in training (p < 0.008) were all predictive of race performance. Heart rate recovery after exercise (p = 0.21) and speed recorded at 600 m of a 1 km benchmark test in training (p = 0.94) were not predictive. In-training physiological data analytics used along with subjective experience may help trainers identify promising horses and improve decision-making

    073 Right Ventricle Contractile Reserve as a Pre-operative Tool for Assessing RV failure after Continuous Flow LVAD Implantation

    IntroductionLatest generation continuous flow left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have been proposed as an alternative to heart transplantation for end-stage heart failure. However, postoperative right ventricle (RV) dysfunction remains common and has a negative impact on prognosis. Purpose of our study was to identify echocardiographic or hemodynamic parameters that could predict early RV failure after LVAD implantation in patients with biventricular dysfunction.MethodsFourteen patients with biventricular dysfunction who have been evaluated for LVAD implantation were included. Right and left ventricular dysfunction were respectively defined as: tricuspid annular plane excursion < 16 mm (TAPSE) and LV ejection fraction < 35%. In all patients, preoperative measurements were obtained at rest. In 7 patients, right heart catheterization was performed simultaneously with increasing doses of dobutamine (15γ/Kg/min). Primary endpoint was death caused by right ventricle systolic dysfunction or need for right ventricle mechanical support within 30 days after surgery (RVSD+).ResultsMean recipient age was 58±7 years. Primary end-point (RVSD+) was noted in five patients. Preoperative demographic, echocardiographic and hemodynamic data were similar between RVSD+ and RVSD- patients (Table).     Resilience and memories in Peru during the pandemic

    Peru is one of the countries most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, where the health crisis quickly provoked a serious socio-economic and political crisis. The fragile Peruvian state was unable to build an effective response to this multifaceted crisis, in this context, we defend the hypothesis that forms of affectivity, solidarity, memory and collective resilience related to the recent past (1980-1990) were reactivated in many rural and urban communities of the country. Based on a qualitative methodology, this article questions the role that the collective memory played in reactivating historical forms of community resilience at the local level. Based on three empirical cases (the rondas campesinas, the Covid commandos and the ollas comunes), we analyze how the memories of past violence and crises, as well as the responses to them, have offered original tools in certain communities to elaborate effective responses of resilience during the first months of the global pandemic. In this sense, we reflect and draw attention to the potential of setting up agency and resilience based on collective memory, which is framed is by the diversity of the cultural and local experiences.El Perú es uno de los países más afectados por la pandemia de Covid-19, ya que a la crisis sanitaria se sumó rápidamente una grave crisis socioeconómica y política. El frágil Estado peruano no pudo construir una estrategia de respuesta eficaz a esta crisis polifacética. En este contexto, defendemos la hipótesis de que formas de afectividad, solidaridad, memoria y resiliencia colectiva relacionadas con el pasado reciente (1980-1990) se reactivaron en numerosos barrios y comunidades rurales y urbanas del país. Basado en una metodología cualitativa, este artículo cuestiona el rol que las memorias colectivas juegan en reactivar formas de resiliencia comunitaria en el ámbito local. A partir de tres casos empíricos (las rondas campesinas, los «Comandos Covid» y las ollas comunes), analizamos cómo la memoria de las violencias y de las crisis anteriores, así como de las respuestas elaboradas frente a ellas, han ofrecido herramientas originales en ciertas comunidades para elaborar respuestas eficaces de resiliencia durante los primeros meses de la pandemia global. En ese sentido, proponemos reflexionar y poner atención al potencial ejercicio de la agencia y la resiliencia fundamentadas en la memoria colectiva, la cual se enmarca en la diversidad de experiencias culturales y locales
