    Get PDF
International audienceThe amount of information in term of documents, available to users as a result of information retrieval process for the purpose of resolution of decision problems is a major factor that determines whether economically viable decisions would be made or not. Various works in the literature had addressed the challenges of representing the documents with key terms (generated from the document) as well as the variations in the meaning of each key terms. In this work, a document representation scheme that is based on the key terms generated from the documents and their usage was developed. To realize this document representation scheme, a computational model for capturing document usage was designed with the use of attribute value pair technique of document annotation. The document usage model designed was applied in the development of a Competitive Intelligence based Document Usage Creation and Exploration system that is currently under development. A preliminary evaluation of the document usage model based on cosine similarity function between user query and documents set was carried out. The result obtained shows that representing documents in terms of their usage can enhance the quality of information search results as documents that would hitherto be considered not relevant to user query are found to be ranked very relevant based on previous usages

The objective of the research study was to look into the effects of financial source on small and medium enterprises performance in Ado-Ekiti metropolis. Survey research method was used via structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was administered to 225 respondents in 45 conveniently selected registered SMEs in the Ado-Ekiti metropolis. 4 point Likert Scale was employed to collect the respondents’ data. Since the respondents are the owners and concerned authorities of the business, there is no need for undecided option. Stratified sampling technique was adopted while frequency tables were used to explain the demographic of the respondents. Multiples regression analysis was employed in the study since we have multiple independent variables (like: personal savings, informal and formal sources of finance) and one dependent variable (i.e performance). From the findings, it shows that each of the financial sources has a reasonable level connection with the performance of SMEs. The model summary of each of the sources of finance shows personal savings with R2 33.1%, informal 42.0% and formal 46.7% respectively. However, the overall regression analysis results of the three sources indicate that R2 is 35.6% with F-test value of 40.78% attributed to performance. The overall coefficient results show that Mfb in formal source ranked best with t value of 5.933 and 0.00 at 5% level of significance and followed by family in informal source with t value of 3.940 and 0.00 at 5% level of significance and esusu in personal saving with t value of 3.180 and 0.00 at 5% level of significance respectively. The study concluded that there is nexus between sources of finance and business’ performance and from the overall coefficient regression results, it shows that formal source of finance is the most significant independent variables that is enhancing SMEs’ performance in Ado-Ekiti metropolis. Organisational sustainability becomes a nascent concept in the world of business and in academic community. The insurance industry sustainability is beleaguered with low performance of business process, absence of lean structure, poor organisational creativity and excessive talent poaching; suggestively exacerbated by low demand in skills shift (organisational knowledge, critical thinking skill, problem-solving skill and analytical skill). The article addresses this gap by investigating the effect of skills shift on organisational sustainability of selected insurance firms in Lagos State, Nigeria. Methodologically, cross-sectional survey research design was adopted. The findings showed that skills shift had positive significant effect on organisational sustainability (Adj R2 = 0.704, F(2, 337) = 404.206, p < 0.05). The research concludes that skills shift affects organisational sustainability of the selected Insurance companies in Lagos State, Nigeria. The research highlights the need for insurance business to move towards investing in capabilities, knowledge improvement, enhancing critical thinking skill, problem-solving skill, and analytical skill which are valuable enablers of organisational sustainability. These findings suggest unique implications for chief executives, managers, regulators and policy makers

This study examined the effect of non-oil revenue on economic growth in Nigeria. The four specific variables proxy for non-oil revenue are: Value Added Tax, Companies Income Tax, Personal Income Tax and Custom & Excise Duties, while Gross Domestic Product was used to represent economic growth in Nigeria. The study population consists of all individuals, corporation soles and corporate organisations whose taxes were paid to the Nigerian government except firms operating in the upstream industry. The study sample consists the entire population of study using the census sampling approach. The secondary source of data collection method was used in generating data from the Federal Inland Revenue Service Statistical bulletin of 2018 and the National Bureau of Statistics of 2019 for the period 1994-2018. The descriptive statistics and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression techniques were used to analysed the data collected. The study findings revealed that indirect taxes (Custom & Excise Duties and Value Added Tax) have more significant positive effect on the Nigerian economic growth than direct taxes (Companies Income Tax and Personal Income Tax). Also, direct taxes have significant but negative effect on the Nigerian economic growth, especially in the long run. It is therefore recommend that simple and transparent tax laws be enacted to regulate the tax regimes in Nigeria in order to avoid any form of illicit strategic tax behaviour by management. Also, the problems of implementation of good tax reforms policies should be eliminated. Tax authority should provide strategies to strengthen the control on the significant variables identified in this study analysis. Keywords: Tax revenue, economic growth, gross domestic product, direct tax, indirect tax. DOI: 10.7176/RJFA/11-8-10 Publication date: April 30th 202

Contexte & objectif. Conclusion. English title: Pain perception and management during office hysteroscopy Context and objective. Hysteroscopy has undergone major advances in recent years in several aspects. It has moved from an inpatient to an outpatient procedure and from the operating room to the office setting. But one of the problems with these advances is pain management during and after the procedure. To review the different means, both pharmacological and nonpharmacological, used for reducing pain perception during hysteroscopy in the office setting. Methods. This is an exhaustive review of the literature (Pubmed, Medline, Cochrane library) concerning meta-analyses, literature reviews and randomized trials published on the subject and in English from 2003 to 2021. Conclusion. Several means with very variable effectiveness are proposed to reduce pain during hysteroscopy in the office setting. The authors agree on the fact that a good mastery of the anatomy of the female genital tract seen during hysteroscopy, the vaginoscopic approach and psychotherapy allow a significant reduction of pain during hysteroscopy and therefore an improvement of its tolerance without the need for any anaesthesia or analgesia. Development of a Design Tool for Flow Rate Optimization in the Tata Swach Water Filter

    Get PDF
When developing a first-generation product, an iterative approach often yields the shortest time-to-market. In order to optimize its performance, however, a fundamental understanding of the theory governing its operation becomes necessary. This paper details the optimization of the Tata Swach, a consumer water purifier produced for India. The primary objective of the work was to increase flow rate while considering other factors such as cost, manufacturability, and efficacy. A mathematical model of the flow characteristics through the filter was developed. Based on this model, a design tool was created to allow designers to predict flow behavior without prototyping, significantly reducing the necessity of iteration. Sensitivity analysis was used to identify simple ways to increase flow rate as well as potential weak points in the design. Finally, it was demonstrated that maximum flow rate can be increased by 50% by increasing the diameter of a flow-restricting feature while simultaneously increasing the length of the active purification zone. This can be accomplished without significantly affecting cost, manufacturability, and efficacy.MIT Tata Center for Technology and Desig
