    Generating Query Suggestions to Support Task-Based Search

    We address the problem of generating query suggestions to support users in completing their underlying tasks (which motivated them to search in the first place). Given an initial query, these query suggestions should provide a coverage of possible subtasks the user might be looking for. We propose a probabilistic modeling framework that obtains keyphrases from multiple sources and generates query suggestions from these keyphrases.     Otizmli Küçük Çocuklar ve Ebeveynlerinde Katılım: Çoklu Olgu Çalışması

    This qualitative multiple-case study comprehensively examined the circumstances that supported and hindered social engagement in the three toddlers with autism when they interacted with their mothers. Directive actions of mothers for controlling and teaching purposes and requesting actions of toddlers resulted in instrumental engagement during which power struggles were sometimes observed. The findings indicated that social engagement was established when one interacting partner’s social initiation was accepted with a social response from the other partner. Those socially engaged moments were first built upon the toddlers’ individual interests but maintained only by continuous back-and-forth responses from both mothers and toddlers manifesting a transactional sequence during which the schema of their interaction continuously changed, adapted, and developed. This finding revealed that social, rather than instrumental, engagement may lead, possibly, to a sense of joy in these children while interacting with their mothers. One further approach related to this finding can be concentrating on the child’s social motivation (e.g., having fun), rather than non-social motivation (e.g., receiving a favorite snack or toy) while interacting. Such an approach can be a promising avenue for optimally encouraging social purposes of engagement in toddlers with autism.Otizmli üç küçük çocuğun anneleri ile etkileşimleri sırasında onların sosyal katılımlarını destekleyen ve engelleyen koşullar çoklu olgu çalışmasıyla incelenmiştir. Annelerin kontrol ve öğretim amaçlı yönergeler içeren davranışları ve otizmli küçük çocukların rica içeren davranışları zaman zaman güç savaşlarının gözlendiği araçsal katılım ile sonuçlanmıştır. Bulgular, etkileşim partnerinin sosyal güdüyle başlattığı davranışına diğer etkileşim partnerinin sosyal güdüyle cevap vermesi ile sosyal katılımın kurulabildiğini göstermiştir. Sosyal amaçlı katılım başlangıcının otizmli küçük çocuğun bireysel ilgi alanları üzerine kurulabilmesi ve yalnızca her iki etkileşim partnerinin süregelen sosyal amaçlı cevapları ile korunabilmesi, sosyal amaçlı etkileşimlerde eylemlerarası (transactional) bir sıranın var olduğunu göstermiştir. Eylemlerarası sıra boyunca iki partner arasındaki etkileşim resminin sabit kalmadığı, sürekli değiştiği, uyum sağladığı ve geliştiği gözlenmiştir. Bu bulgular, otizmli küçük çocukların anneleri ile etkileşimlerinde, araçsal olmaktan ziyade sosyal amaçlı katılım anlarından muhtemelen keyif aldıklarının göstergesi olabilir. Bu nedenle, bir sonraki adımda otizmli küçük çocukların ebeveynleri ile etkileşimleri sırasında (çocuğa sevdiği atıştırmalığı veya oyuncağı vermek gibi), sosyal olmayan motivasyonlar yerine, (çocuğun keyif alması, eğlenmesi gibi) sosyal motivasyonlara odaklanmak faydalı olabilir.     The Correlates of Turkish Preschool Preservice Teachers’ Social Competence, Empathy and Communication Skills

    The purpose of the current study was to examine the associations between Turkish preschool pre-service teacher’s personal and educational characteristics, and their social competence, empathy, and communication skills. A total of 385 state university Turkish pre-service teachers (age range 18 to 32 years) from the early childhood education field completed a Demographic Information Form on personal and educational characteristics, the Social Skills Inventory (SSI) Scale measuring their social competence, The Scales of Empathic Tendency for measuring empathy skills, and a Communication Skills Evaluation Scale measuring communication skills. Bivariate Pearson-correlations, independent t tests, and one-way ANOVAs were used to test study hypotheses. Results indicated that women scored higher on empathy and communication skills, and having more friends was related to higher social competence and empathy. Pre-service teachers who were members of a social club scored higher on communication skills than their peers. Additional associations among variables, limitations, and future directions are discussed

    Simultaneous use of Individual and Joint Regularization Terms in Compressive Sensing: Joint Reconstruction of Multi-Channel Multi-Contrast MRI Acquisitions

    Purpose: A time-efficient strategy to acquire high-quality multi-contrast images is to reconstruct undersampled data with joint regularization terms that leverage common information across contrasts. However, these terms can cause leakage of uncommon features among contrasts, compromising diagnostic utility. The goal of this study is to develop a compressive sensing method for multi-channel multi-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that optimally utilizes shared information while preventing feature leakage. Theory: Joint regularization terms group sparsity and colour total variation are used to exploit common features across images while individual sparsity and total variation are also used to prevent leakage of distinct features across contrasts. The multi-channel multi-contrast reconstruction problem is solved via a fast algorithm based on Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers. Methods: The proposed method is compared against using only individual and only joint regularization terms in reconstruction. Comparisons were performed on single-channel simulated and multi-channel in-vivo datasets in terms of reconstruction quality and neuroradiologist reader scores. Results: The proposed method demonstrates rapid convergence and improved image quality for both simulated and in-vivo datasets. Furthermore, while reconstructions that solely use joint regularization terms are prone to leakage-of-features, the proposed method reliably avoids leakage via simultaneous use of joint and individual terms. Conclusion: The proposed compressive sensing method performs fast reconstruction of multi-channel multi-contrast MRI data with improved image quality. It offers reliability against feature leakage in joint reconstructions, thereby holding great promise for clinical use.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures. Submitted for possible publicatio

    {\it Ab initio} 27Al^{27}Al NMR chemical shifts and quadrupolar parameters for Al2O3Al_2O_3 phases and their precursors

    The Gauge-Including Projector Augmented Wave (GIPAW) method, within the Density Functional Theory (DFT) Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) framework, is applied to compute solid state NMR parameters for 27Al^{27}Al in the α\alpha, θ\theta, and κ\kappa aluminium oxide phases and their gibbsite and boehmite precursors. The results for well-established crystalline phases compare very well with available experimental data and provide confidence in the accuracy of the method. For γ\gamma-alumina, four structural models proposed in the literature are discussed in terms of their ability to reproduce the experimental spectra also reported in the literature. Among the considered models, the Fd3ˉmFd\bar{3}m structure proposed by Paglia {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 71}, 224115 (2005)] shows the best agreement. We attempt to link the theoretical NMR parameters to the local geometry. Chemical shifts depend on coordination number but no further correlation is found with geometrical parameters. Instead our calculations reveal that, within a given coordination number, a linear correlation exists between chemical shifts and Born effective charges

    CHILDREN’S EMOTION REGULATION AND ATTACHMENT TO PARENTS: PARENTAL EMOTION SOCIALIZATION AS MODERATOR

    We examined the associations among parental emotion socialization, and children’s emotion regulation and attachment to parents. In particular, we examined the moderating role of parental emotion socialization in the relationship between children’s emotion regulation and attachment to parents. Participants were 78 Turkish children (49 boys) aged from 60 to 77 months and their parents. Parents reported on the socialization strategies they used for their children’s emotions and on their children’s emotion regulation, and we assessed children’s attachment to parents via the Doll Story Completion Task. Results revealed that parents’ minimization reaction to children’s emotions moderated the association between children’s emotion regulation and attachment to parents. When parents’ response was punitive, children with poor emotion regulation displayed stronger attachment to parents than children with robust emotion regulation. In addition, girls had a more secure attachment than boys to parents. Our results highlight the importance of children’s emotion regulation and parental emotion socialization for children’s secure early attachment to parents
