Additions and Revisions to the Presidential Scholars Award Program: A Proposal

    Get PDF
For my Honors Project, I set out to help improve the Presidential Scholars Award program. The PSA program offers its recipients the opportunity to engage in a four-year, co-curricular experience during their time at Bowling Green State University and during their time in the BGSU Honors College. For this project, I sought to recommend a new four-year model for the PSA program founded on formal, published research and my own qualitative research. This new model includes common experiences for each class level such as regular meetings and yearly events to establish a cohort culture. In completing this project, I advance recommendations in this proposal that can be utilized to create a well-rounded PSA model that can be implemented in the Honors College for years to come

The Most Effective EFL Approach for an Elementary School in Spain

    Get PDF
The main research question addressed in this paper is: what does the literature say about effective EFL approaches to be implemented in a private elementary school in Spain? In order to fully answer that question this capstone addressed the following question as well: what teaching strategies are effective for developing fluency in an EFL setting for children? The method of study was a systematic review of literature. Key influencers were Björklund and Suni (2000) and Björklund (2005). They studied a Finnish immersion school that used content-based instruction in a multilingual program with successful results. Another key influencer was Pérez-Vidal (2013). She discussed findings of several studies on CLIL programs in Spain and compared results of intensive ESL in Quebec with CLIL in Spain. The literature showed that content-based EFL instruction is the most effective approach for elementary EFL and effective teaching strategies are stories combined with drama, rhymes, and songs

Non-Pharmacological Pain Management Techniques in Neonates

    Get PDF
Research based evidence supports non-pharmacological techniques for pain management in neonates. Hospitalized neonates undergo multiple painful procedures, and poorly treated pain leads to negative effects in neonates. Pharmacological techniques have many adverse effects. The benefits of non-pharmacological techniques include fewer adverse effects, ease of implementation, and less cost. The purpose of this study is to determine the most effective non-pharmacological technique for reducing procedural pain in neonates

The researchers have identified the creation of a successful farming cooperative as a goal for the Pembroke Farming Family Association (PFFA), and have examined the literature to determine the components of such cooperatives. A literature review revealed that increased education in many areas is strongly correlated with successful farming cooperatives. The researchers determined that education through mentorship is an evidence based practice which could be implemented as an intervention. Then, the researchers located the measurement instrument of seasonal pre-test and post-test surveys, which would require additional questions related to specifics of farming in Pembroke. Finally, the researchers found that dependent t-tests could be used to analyze the data gathered through the measurement instruments. After evaluating the study for validity and reliability, the researchers believe that the proposal will effectively examine the possibility of the implementation of mentorship programs to assist the creation of a successful farming cooperative in Pembroke. During this session, participants will Learn of the varied needs in the Pembroke Township Understand literature results which identify barriers to community development in rural, impoverished communities Discover opportunities for community development in the Pembroke community Explore the proposed mentorship structure to decrease barriers to employment and increase life skills developmen

    Ensemble Deep Learning

    Get PDF
Machine learning has become a common tool within the tech industry due to its high versatility and efficiency with large datasets. Partnering with the Nevada National Security Site, our goal is to improve accuracy of machine predictions by utilizing deep learning, which will enable the power and accuracy of a prediction to grow from the model. To build a deep learning model, multiple neural network architectures were developed and combined to create an ensemble neural network. The project’s objective is to determine the comparative differences between the efficiency of the ensemble neural network versus each individual neural network. The data set used to test, validate, and train the networks is 1D regressive. After testing architecture and determining accuracy of certain networks, the model will be updated and tested again to compare accuracies. Accuracy is the number of correct predictions over the total number of predictions. As model precision is a key aspect of machine learning, emphasis is placed on the efficiency of ensemble neural networks

Childhood Trauma and Eating Psychopathology:A Mediating Role for Dissociation and Emotion Dysregulation?

    Get PDF
The present study examined the relationship between different forms of childhood trauma and eating psychopathology using a multiple mediation model that included emotion dysregulation and dissociation as hypothesised mediators. 142 female undergraduate psychology students studying at two British Universities participated in this cross-sectional study. Participants completed measures of childhood trauma (emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional neglect and physical neglect), eating psychopathology, dissociation and emotion dysregulation. Multiple mediation analysis was conducted to investigate the study's proposed model. Results revealed that the multiple mediation model significantly predicted eating psychopathology. Additionally, both emotion dysregulation and dissociation were found to be significant mediators between childhood trauma and eating psychopathology. A specific indirect effect was observed between childhood emotional abuse and eating psychopathology through emotion dysregulation. Findings support previous research linking childhood trauma to eating psychopathology. They indicate that multiple forms of childhood trauma should be assessed for individuals with eating disorders. The possible maintaining role of emotion regulation processes should also be considered in the treatment of eating disorders

Sports Holdings in the Southeastern Conference University Libraries: Football as a Case Study

    Get PDF
Of the twelve National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision conferences, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) has attained prominence. But how do the SEC’s university libraries fare when evaluated for their football holdings? While university libraries develop their collections mainly to support research and teaching functions, according to accepted collection development practice, the extent to which sports of local importance are represented in their collections is a subject given little attention in the professional literature. In order to help close the gap, this study evaluates the football holdings of the 12 SEC university library systems using the checklist method of each library’s Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) system from a remote location. The evaluation is meant to serve as a case study of sports holdings in the SEC libraries by using an authoritative checklist consisting of the best fiction and nonfiction football books. The checklist method, which compares a library’s holdings to an authoritative list, is an effective means of identifying collection strengths and weaknesses

Effect of a One-Time Cognitive Functional Therapy Intervention in Patients with Moderate to High Risk of Chronic Low Back Pain: Case Series Study

Can an early confrontation of patients’ fear and beliefs about low back pain lead to better outcomes? Hypothesis: A one-time treatment geared toward confronting fear and negative pain beliefs will result in reduced pain interference and fatigue, and increased physical function and self-efficacy, as well as guide patients from fear avoidance behavior to active life participation
