Inclusive and differential W and Z at CMS and ATLAS

Several electroweak precision measurements are performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC. The main ones are carried out using Drell-Yan production of single W and Z boson. They regard the measurement of the production cross sections of W and Z bosons, the mass of the W boson, and sin2θW\sin^2\theta_W. The results of the sin2θW\sin^2\theta_W measurements have an accuracy of approximately twice that reached at LEP and SLD. Other measurements reported are about the Drell-Yan differential production cross section.Comment: Contribution to the 2019 QCD session of the 54th Rencontres de Morion

Wage incentive profiles in dual labour markets

    Get PDF
We propose a modified version of the Shapiro-Stiglitz’s (1984) efficiency wage model by introducing temporary contracts in the standard setup. New theoretical insights emerge on the incentive problem faced by workers and firms. We argue that the existence of temporary contracts broaden the incentive menu available to employers and that the optimal incentive structure can be sustained as an equi- librium outcome only if permanent contracts do not disappear. We also provide an alternative explanation of the wage penalty suffered by temporary workers even if standard models of efficiency wages would predict higher compensations for workers facing a higher job loss risk.Dual labour market, efficiency wages, wage differentials

We present a feasibility study of the Z and W boson production in association with jets with the first LHC data recorded by CMS detector with pppp collisions at s=10\sqrt{s}=10 TeV

Searches for the standard model Higgs boson at CMS

    Get PDF
We searched for the standard model Higgs boson using approximately 5 fb−1 of 7TeV pp collisions data collected with the CMS detector at LHC. We exclude at 95% confidence level a standard model Higgs boson with mass between 127.5 and 600 GeV. The expected 95% confidence level exclusion if the Higgs boson is not present is from 114.5 and 543GeV. The most significant excess is observed at 125 GeV with a local significance of 2.8σ. The excess is consistent both with background fluctuation and a standard model Higgs boson with mass of about 125 GeV

    Einstein-Cartan pseudoscalaron inflation

We study a class of early universe cosmological models based on Einstein-Cartan gravity and including a higher derivative term corresponding to a power of the Holst scalar curvature. The resulting effective action is basically given by General Relativity and an additional neutral pseudoscalar field (the pseudoscalaron), unequivocally related to the corresponding components of the torsion, that necessarily acquire a dynamics. The induced pseudoscalaron potential provides a realistic inflationary phase together with a very rich postinflationary epoch, resulting by the coupling of the pseudoscalaron to ordinary matter.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

Not only a problem of fatigue and sleepiness: Changes in psychomotor performance in Italian nurses across 8-h rapidly rotating shifts

    Get PDF
Although many studies have detailed the consequences of shift work in nurses concerning health, fatigue, sleepiness, or medical errors, no study has been carried out trying to disentangle the contribution of sleepiness and fatigue associated to shift work from the attentional performance. The aim of this pilot study is (A) to investigate the effects of an 8-h rapidly rotating shift on fatigue and sleepiness among staff nurses and (B) how these factors affect their psychomotor performance. Fourteen nurses were selected for a within-subject cross-sectional study according to this sequence of shifts: morning–afternoon–night, which were compared as function of tiredness, sleepiness, and performance at the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT). Subsequently, a within-subject Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) evaluated if the observed differences between shifts persist when the contribution of sleepiness is controlled. Our results clearly indicate that night shifts are associated with significant greater sleepiness and tiredness, and worsened performance at the PVT. As hypothesized, ANCOVA showed that these differences disappear when the contribution of sleepiness is controlled. Results point to a lower psychomotor performance in night compared to day shifts that depends on sleepiness. Hence, interventions to minimize the consequences of the night shift should consider a reduction of sleepiness

La filière étatique des semences de riz pluvial en Casamance (Sénégal) : fonctionnement, contraintes et perspectives de développement

    Get PDF
Description du sujet. Conclusions. Description of the subject. In sub-Saharan countries and particularly in Senegal, traditional seed systems still represent the most widespread option in family-based agricultures, despite the many efforts made by Governments to develop modern and economically sustainable seed chains. Objectives. Analyse formal rainfed rice seed sector in Casamance, a rice-rich regionwhere rice is still the main source of food for rural households, at the organizational and at the level of market structure. Method. Collected statistical data were processed to describe the situation of demand/supply of certified rice seed in the subregion and in targeted region. Through semi-structured interviews, the main actors of the sector were interviewed to identify and analyse chain structure and to fill the information gap from quantitative data. Results. The study identifies the main limitations and constraints of the sector as well as the inefficiencies of a seed system designed as a market chain and not adapted to a subsistence context where the final commercial demand for certified seeds is almost zero. A strong dependence of the actors involved in relation to interventions of Government and its technical and financial partners and the lack of a consultation and planning framework between actors and supply systems have been outlined. Conclusions. The implementation of an integrated seed system and a framework of actions to be undertaken in the region to support the integration of various chain are proposed. This framework can be used as tool to orient and assist the identification and prioritization of interventions of Government and its TFP. &nbsp

Internal Migration and Wage Differentials among Italian University Graduates

    Get PDF
In this paper, we estimate wage differentials among Italian university Graduates three years after graduation due to sequential geographic mobility. By means of a matching procedure we quantify wage premia associated with the choice of studying far from home, moving after graduation and moving back home after graduation. We find evidence of large gains for those who move after graduation, little benefits for those who choose to go back home after having studied in regions different from that of origin. We also assess a “transitivity” result for the estimated treatment effects
