Transforming housing typologies. Space syntax evaluation and shape grammar generation

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the transformation of housing typologies by using a grammar-based methodology assisted by the use of space syntax measures. In this paper we start by describing three different types of housing buildings regarding their functionality by using syntactic measures. The studied buildings were constructed in Lisbon from the 18th to the 20th century and are representative repetitive cases in the city. The buildings’ descriptions are then used as part of the systematization of rehabilitation principles for the transformation grammar. We concluded that the particular characteristics of those buildings enable specific rehabilitation strategies to be carried out and that those different strategies may be integrated in the general grammar framework but defining specific sub-grammars.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Plantations in São Tomé and Principe: Spatial layout and induced behaviours

In the 16th century, Portugal established in São Tomé and Principe one of the most productive plantation economies in the tropics based on slave labour and sugar intensive monoculture. Later, from the mid-19th century to 1975, large plantations called Roças were developed to produce coffee and cocoa for highly profitable export production. As a result, at the beginning of the 20th century, São Tomé and Principe was the biggest exporter of cacao in the world. In these plantations, thousands of indentured workers were employed. As a result, roças embody the traces of merciless labour conditions and a spatial organisation designed for the privilege of Europeans and their hegemony. Nowadays, roças serve several purposes, ranging from luxurious hotels to houses of large communities in squatters, and still, several roças are in ruin, being consumed by nature. The analysis of this heritage is relevant since these settlements can be future-directed legacies, which can contribute to a global cultural overhaul and sustainable development. A comprehensive overview of this context allows us to understand the past and the present, considering tangible and intangible values embodied by these heritage plantations. Critical and diachronic studies on the colonial and contemporary heritage are integrated by investigating the spatial layout of roça Agostinho Neto and roça Água Izé in their original design and as they are today. Roças were initially designed to be isolated and hierarchical3 to optimize the production process and the trade export. Their original spatial organisations aim at segregating some of their inhabitants, while their territorial location makes them isolated regions inside São Tomé Island. This study aims to identity how the physical environment of roças have influenced and still influences human experience and behaviour and support the thesis that these settlements were designed hierarchically. Sensory access, behavioural affordance, and sociality are discussed by integrating critical perspectives arising from on-site observations and social surveys collected in November 2021 and coupled with the space syntax analysis.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The atomic orbitals of the topological atom

    Get PDF
The effective atomic orbitals have been realized in the framework of Bader’s atoms in molecules theory for a general wavefunction. This formalism can be used to retrieve from any type of calculation a proper set of orthonormalized numerical atomic orbitals, with occupation numbers that sum up to the respective Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) atomic populations. Experience shows that only a limited number of effective atomic orbitals exhibit significant occupation numbers. These correspond to atomic hybrids that closely resemble the core and valence shells of the atom. The occupation numbers of the remaining effective orbitals are almost negligible, except for atoms with hypervalent character. In addition, the molecular orbitals of a calculation can be exactly expressed as a linear combination of this orthonormalized set of numerical atomic orbitals, and the Mulliken population analysis carried out on this basis set exactly reproduces the original QTAIM atomic populations of the atoms. Approximate expansion of the molecular orbitals over a much reduced set of orthogonal atomic basis functions can also be accomplished to a very good accuracy with a singular value decomposition procedure

Teachers\u27 Perception: Implementing Competency-Based Education for Grade Ten Students in East Berbice Corentyne, Guyana

    Get PDF
This study delves into the burgeoning realm of Competency-based Education and Training (CBET), a pedagogical framework characterised by students\u27 demonstration of mastery of specific topics. Focused on the educational landscape of Guyana, where CBET adoption is on the rise, the research investigates educators\u27 perceptions of implementing CBET methodologies in classrooms. The study comprises 31 participants selected through purposive sampling, employing a convergent, interpretive approach within a quantitative, non-experimental design framework. Comprehensive literature reviews on CBET methodology, its historical evolution, a juxtaposition with traditional educational approaches, implementation strategies, and the inherent challenges are central to the investigation. Findings reveal a consensus among teachers, irrespective of status or gender, regarding the efficacy of CBET techniques in instructional practices. However, a generational divide emerges, with younger educators exhibiting greater receptivity towards transitioning to CBET methodologies, contrasting with their more seasoned counterparts\u27 reluctance to embrace the requisite changes. In essence, this study illuminates the dynamic landscape of educational methodologies in Guyana, shedding light on the evolving role of CBET and the divergent perspectives shaping its integration within classroom setting

Robotic construction analysis: Simulation with virtual reality

    Get PDF
Advances in robotic construction are evident and increasing every year, bringing present and potential improvements. However, the economic and social impacts are hard to assess and quantify without physical in situ testing, which is expensive and time-consuming. This paper presents a methodology for the simulation of robotic construction technologies, namely drones, using a virtual reality environment. Our hypothesis is that a virtual reality simulation of a robotic construction (H1) has the potential of increasing the precision of predicting the construction duration and cost and (H2) allows for the detection of construction problems. The study begins with a review of the literature on drones, robotic arms, and hybrid automatic construction solutions, as well as virtual reality construction simulations, summarising the robotic technologies currently being used, mainly in academic research, to assemble construction elements. It then proposes a construction simulation methodology applied to three architectonic elements to analyse different approaches and different scenarios for robotic construction simulation methodology. A construction simulation is tested, and the data is analysed and compared with traditional construction methods, focussing on construction time and costs.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Abstract: This paper reports the clinical, bacteriological and pathological findings of a thoracic aortic aneurysm in a four-year-old Anglo-Nubian goat buck, related to a framework of visceral caseous lymphadenitis. General clinical examination showed heart rate of 75 beats per minute, respiratory rate of 20 movements per minute and ruminal movements of four movements per minute. Superficial lymph nodes were normal upon palpation. Rectal temperature was slightly high (40.5°C). Blood test showed an intense leukocytosis (54,000/?L), characterized by strong neutrophil shift to the left. At necropsy, a large blood clot was detected in the thoracic cavity. The thickening of the myocardium and dilatation of the aorta in the thoracic portion, presenting a saculiform format was also observed. A large number of abscesses were disseminated in the media and intima layers of aorta. The aorta lumen obstruction by arterial plaques consisting of inflammatory infiltrate, predominantly neutrophilic was also detected. Abscesses were found spread in turbinate, rumen, reticulum, kidneys, liver, spleen, testicles and aorta wall. The microbiological exam of exudate confirmed Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis as the causal agent. A temperatura retal estava ligeiramente aumentada (40,5°C).
