    A Decade Later – US 31 Mitigation

    Get PDF
Significant transportation projects are designed and built, but that’s not the end of the story. Wetland and stream mitigation efforts, including monitoring and maintenance, may continue for a decade. This presentation will showcase INDOT mitigation sites—from their creation a decade ago to the awesome results—for projects like US-31. We’ll share timelines, photos, quality data, and challenges identified and addressed over the years

The design, construction and testing of the optics for a 147-cm-aperture telescope

    Get PDF
Geodetic optics research for the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories (AFCRL) is described. The work consisted mainly of the fabrication of the optical components for a telescope with a 152-cm-diam (60-in.) primary mirror masked down to 147-cm-diam for use by the AFCRL for a lunar ranging experiment. Among the achievements of this contract were the following: completion of the primary and secondary mirrors for a high-quality 147-cm-diam telescope system in eight months from the start of edging the primary; manufacture and testing of a unique center mount for the primary according to an AFCRL design that allowed for a thin-edged and therefore less-massive mirror; and development of a quantitative analysis of the wire test for calculating the departure of the mirror figure from the design figure quickly and accurately after each polishing step. This analysis method in conjunction with a knowledge of polishing rates for given weights and diameters of tools, mirror, and polishing materials should considerably reduce the polishing time required for future large mirrors

Conceptual design study of a Harrier V/STOL research aircraft

    Get PDF
MCAIR recently completed a conceptual design study to define modification approaches to, and derive planning prices for the conversion of a two place Harrier to a V/STOL control, display and guidance research aircraft. Control concepts such as rate damping, attitude stabilization, velocity command, and cockpit controllers are to be demonstrated. Display formats will also be investigated, and landing, navigation and guidance systems flight tested. The rear cockpit is modified such that it can be quickly adapted to faithfully simulate the controls, displays and handling qualities of a Type A or Type B V/STOL. The safety pilot always has take command capability. The modifications studied fall into two categories: basic modifications and optional modifications. Technical descriptions of the basic modifications and of the optional modifications are presented. The modification plan and schedule as well as the test plan and schedule are presented. The failure mode and effects analysis, aircraft performance, aircraft weight, and aircraft support are discussed

Effect of Abundance and Survey Protocol on Estimates of Occupancy and Detection Probability for Northern Bobwhites

    Get PDF
We compared estimates of occupancy of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) between areas with relatively low and high abundance using single-survey and multiple-survey protocols, with and without accounting for detection probability, and investigated how time during the breeding season affected detection probability in Oklahoma, USA, in 2009–2011. Estimates of occupancy and detection probability increased as the number of survey occasions increased. Detection probability was significantly higher in the area of high abundance (P 0.001), and increased as the breeding season advanced from mid-May to late July. Accounting for detection probability increased occupancy estimates by 31% in the low-abundance area but only 1.9% in the high abundance area when using 3 survey occasions per year. Managers using occupancy to detect changes in bobwhite populations should use 4 survey occasions per year to ensure accurate estimates of both occupancy and detection probability

    Choosing corn hybrids

    Get PDF
What management decision can make a 40 to 50 bushel per acre difference in grain yield without increasing input costs? If you\u27ve read the title to this article, you can probably guess the answer: hybrid selection! Hybrid selection is a critical component for achieving high yields and yet is not often given enough attention. Seed prices in Iowa are increasing about $1.30 per acre per year (Figure 1). This increase will continue as more genetic traits and stacks become available
