Practical post-modernism: FM and socially constructed realities
The theme of the paper, with examples, is that strategic FM should engage not with elaborate structural functional models of building service supply but with the socially constructed realities of organisations and their results. Several, evidence based, examples of FM creating different conversations will be provided, viz:
• The creation of excellent patient environments in English Hospitals is not a function of structure (whether or not there is an integrated FM Directorate), sourcing (in house or outsourced) or a particular business process. It is a function of leadership exercised through context specific conversations.
• The creation of effective new ‘knowledge’ environments is not a function of a particular design or project structure. It is a reflection of FMs ability to create conversations for changes in business results.
• The failure of FM to capture strategic attention deriving from an obsession with considerations of unit costs and building condition rather than overall costs and business outcomes.
• The role of perceptions and assertions in creating or blocking effective business relationships between FM providers and clients
In the process the paper will challenge academic FM, whether research or education, to stop being in thrall to ‘practice’ to a degree that is arguably greater than is found in other areas of business and management, let alone other established disciplines. FM has too many models, too little theory and too little empirical evidence of specific business contributions. It is too concerned with supplying facilities rather than considering the purpose for which a given facility is managed.</p

First-order shock acceleration in solar flares
The first order Fermi shock acceleration model is compared with specific observations where electron, proton, and alpha particle spectra are available. In all events, it is found that a single shock with a compression ratio as inferred from the low energy proton spectra can reasonably produce the full proton, electron, and alpha particle spectra. The model predicts that the acceleration time to a given energy will be approximately equal for electrons and protons and, for reasonable solar parameters, can be less than 1 sec to 100 MeV
Age Differences in the Desirability of Narcissism
Young adult narcissism has been the focus of much discussion in the personality literature and popular press. Yet no previous studies have addressed whether there are age differences in the relative desirability of narcissistic and non-narcissistic self-descriptions, such as those presented as answer choices on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI; Raskin & Hall, 1979). In Study 1, younger age was associated with less negative evaluations of narcissistic (vs. non-narcissistic) statements in general, and more positive evaluations of narcissistic statements conveying leadership/authority. In Study 2, age was unrelated to perceiving a fictional target person as narcissistic, but younger age was associated with more positive connotations for targets described with narcissistic statements and less positive connotations for targets described with non-narcissistic statements, in terms of the inferences made about the target’s altruism, conscientiousness, social status, and self-esteem. In both studies, age differences in the relative desirability of narcissism remained statistically significant when adjusting for participants’ own narcissism, and the NPI showed measurement invariance across age. Despite perceiving narcissism similarly, adults of different ages view the desirability of NPI answer choices differently. These results are important when interpreting cross-generational differences in NPI scores, and can potentially facilitate cross-generational understanding
Galaxy pairs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey - XII: The fuelling mechanism of low excitation radio-loud AGN
We investigate whether the fuelling of low excitation radio galaxies (LERGs)
is linked to major galaxy interactions. Our study utilizes a sample of 10,800
spectroscopic galaxy pairs and 97 post-mergers selected from the Sloan Digital
Sky Survey with matches to multi-wavelength datasets. The LERG fraction amongst
interacting galaxies is a factor of 3.5 higher than that of a control sample
matched in local galaxy density, redshift and stellar mass. However, the LERG
excess in pairs does not depend on projected separation and remains elevated
out to at least 500 kpc, suggesting that major mergers are not their main
fuelling channel. In order to identify the primary fuelling mechanism of LERGs,
we compile samples of control galaxies that are matched in various host galaxy
and environmental properties. The LERG excess is reduced, but not completely
removed, when halo mass or D4000 are included in the matching parameters.
However, when BOTH M_halo and D4000 are matched, there is no LERG excess and
the 1.4 GHz luminosities (which trace jet mechanical power) are consistent
between the pairs and control. In contrast, the excess of optical and mid-IR
selected AGN in galaxy pairs is unchanged when the additional matching
parameters are implemented. Our results suggest that whilst major interactions
may trigger optically and mid-IR selected AGN, the gas which fuels the LERGs
has two secular origins: one associated with the large scale environment, such
as accretion from the surrounding medium or minor mergers, plus an internal
stellar mechanism, such as winds from evolved stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters; 5 page
Prediction, Retrodiction, and The Amount of Information Stored in the Present
We introduce an ambidextrous view of stochastic dynamical systems, comparing
their forward-time and reverse-time representations and then integrating them
into a single time-symmetric representation. The perspective is useful
theoretically, computationally, and conceptually. Mathematically, we prove that
the excess entropy--a familiar measure of organization in complex systems--is
the mutual information not only between the past and future, but also between
the predictive and retrodictive causal states. Practically, we exploit the
connection between prediction and retrodiction to directly calculate the excess
entropy. Conceptually, these lead one to discover new system invariants for
stochastic dynamical systems: crypticity (information accessibility) and causal
irreversibility. Ultimately, we introduce a time-symmetric representation that
unifies all these quantities, compressing the two directional representations
into one. The resulting compression offers a new conception of the amount of
