    Polarized lepton nucleon scattering - summary of the experimental spin sessions at DIS 99

    This paper summarizes the contributions to the experimental sessions on polarized lepton nucleon scattering at the DIS 99 workshop. Results are reported about the flavor decomposition of the quark polarization, a first direct measurement of a positive gluon polarization, the observation of a double-spin asymmetry in diffractive rho production, the polarization of lambda hyperons, the observation of transverse single-spin asymmetries and the measurement of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule.     Improved techniques for thermomechanical testing in support of deformation modeling

    The feasibility of generating precise thermomechanical deformation data to support constitutive model development was investigated. Here, the requirement is for experimental data that is free from anomalies caused by less than ideal equipment and procedures. A series of exploratory tests conducted on Hastelloy X showed that generally accepted techniques for strain controlled tests were lacking in at least three areas. Specifically, problems were encountered with specimen stability, thermal strain compensation, and temperature/mechanical strain phasing. The source of these difficulties was identified and improved thermomechanical testing techniques to correct them were developed. These goals were achieved by developing improved procedures for measuring and controlling thermal gradients and by designing a specimen specifically for thermomechanical testing. In addition, innovative control strategies were developed to correctly proportion and phase the thermal and mechanical components of strain. Subsequently, the improved techniques were used to generate deformation data for Hastelloy X over the temperature range, 200 to 1000 C

    Format and basic geometry of a perspective display of air traffic for the cockpit

    The design and implementation of a perspective display of air traffic for the cockpit is discussed. Parameters of the perspective are variable and interactive so that the appearance of the projected image can be widely varied. This approach makes allowances for exploration of perspective parameters and their interactions. The display was initially used to study the cases of horizontal maneuver biases found in experiments involving a plan view air traffic display format. Experiments to determine the effect of perspective geometry on spatial judgements have evolved from the display program. Several scaling techniques and other adjustments to the perspective are used to tailor the geometry for effective presentation of 3-D traffic situations
