In this transitional period of modern history when change and change by revolution are the order of the day, the plaintive plea of the popular hymn seems to assume an ever more urgent note. But the question is this: How effectively, if at all, can the notion of the unchangeableness of God expressed in this hymn aid an atomic age society in coping with population explosions, sexual, racial, and campus revolutions, and the threat of worldwide nuclear annihilation? Can men of our time indeed experience good news through declarations of God\u27s immutability

    Under the Kyoto protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change the United States is charged with reducing emissions of greenhouse gases to seven percent below their 1990 levels by the period 2008-2012. These reductions could be met from many industries including agriculture. In this paper, an economic simulation model is linked to an ecosystem model to quantify the economic efficiency of policies that might be used to sequester carbon (C) in agricultural soils in the Northern Plains region. Simulations with the Century ecosystem model show that long-term soil C levels associated with a crop/fallow system are less than those for grass alone, but that soil C levels for grass-clover-pasture are greater than for continuously cropped grains. The analysis shows that a CRP-style policy is found to be an inefficient means to increase soil C because the per acre payments to convert crop-land to grass-only draw land from both the crop/fallow system and the continuous cropping system, and costs typically exceed 100perMT(metricton)ofC.Incontrast,paymentstoadoptcontinuouscroppingwerefoundtoproduceincreasesinsoilCforbetween100 per MT (metric ton) of C. In contrast, payments to adopt continuous cropping were found to produce increases in soil C for between 5 to $70 depending on area and degree of targeting of the payments. The most efficient, lowest cost policy is achieved when payments are targeted to land that was previously in a crop/fallow rotation.     On the discovery of tetrapod trackways from Permo-Carboniferous redbeds of Prince Edward Island and their biostratigraphic signiïŹcance

    The ïŹrst fossil tetrapod footprints that were discovered on Prince Edward Island, and which were previously undescribed, are small reptilian trackways assignable to the ichnogenera Notalacerta andGilmoreichnus. Their closest zoological correlatives are small, Permo-Carboniferous "stem-reptiles" of the families Protorothyrididae and Captorhinidae in the suborder Captorhinomorpha, and pelycosauran reptiles, possibly of the Ophiacodontidae. Reptiles of this type are rare to unrepresented in the skeletal fauna of the province. The biochronology of the track-bearing bed, combined with terrestrial vertebrate, palynological and macroïŹ‚oral records, suggest that the host Pictou Group redbeds on Prince Edward Island young from late Stephanian (Pennsylvanian) at Malpeque Bay to early Permian in the north. The combined discoveries of tetrapod footprints and trackways from these Permo-Carboniferous redbeds suggests that the record is potentially extensive. Now included in this record is the youngest known occurrence of the ichno-genus Notalacerta. RÉSUMÉ Les premiĂšres empreintes de fossiles de tĂ©trapodes dĂ©couvertes sur l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard, et prĂ©cĂ©demment non dĂ©crites, sont des traces d'un petit reptile qu'on peut rattacher aux ichnogenres Notalacerta et Gilmoreichnus. Leurs parents gĂ©ologiques les plus proches sont les petits " reptiles-tiges » permocarbonifĂšres des familles des protorothyridides et des captorhinides du sous-ordre des captorhinomorphes, ainsi que les reptiles pĂ©licosauriens, possiblement les ophiacodontides. Les reptiles de ce type sont rares sinon absents au sein de la faune squelettique de la province. La biochronologie des strates renfermant des traces conjuguĂ©e aux relevĂ©s de vertĂ©brĂ©s terrestres et aux relevĂ©s palynologiques et macroïŹ‚oraux laisse supposer que les couches rouges hĂŽtes du groupe de Pictou, sur l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard, remontent Ă  la pĂ©riode du StĂ©phanien tardif (Pennsylvanien), dans la baie Malpeque, au Permien prĂ©coce, dans le nord.     The P2X(7 )receptor is a candidate product of murine and human lupus susceptibility loci: a hypothesis and comparison of murine allelic products

    Systemic lupus erythematosus and its murine equivalent, modelled in the New Zealand Black and New Zealand White (NZB × NZW)F(1 )hybrid strain, are polygenic inflammatory diseases, probably reflecting an autoimmune response to debris from cells undergoing programmed cell death. Several human and murine loci contributing to disease have been defined. The present study asks whether the proinflammatory purinergic receptor P2X(7), an initiator of a form of programmed cell death known as aponecrosis, is a candidate product of murine and human lupus susceptibility loci. One such locus in (NZB × NZW)F(1 )mice is lbw3, which is situated at the distal end of NZW chromosome 5. We first assess whether NZB mice and NZW mice carry distinct alleles of the P2RX(7 )gene as expressed by common laboratory strains, which differ in sensitivity to ATP stimulation. We then compare the responses of NZB lymphocytes, NZW lymphocytes and (NZB × NZW)F(1 )lymphocytes to P2X(7 )stimulation. NZB and NZW parental strains express the distinct P2X(7)-L and P2X(7)-P alleles of P2RX(7), respectively, while lymphocytes from these and (NZB × NZW)F(1 )mice differ markedly in their responses to P2X(7 )receptor stimulation. NZB mice and NZW mice express functionally distinct alleles of the proinflammatory receptor, P2X(7). We show that current mapping suggests that murine and human P2RX(7 )receptor genes lie within lupus susceptibility loci lbw3 and SLEB4, and we argue that these encode a product with the functional characteristics consistent with a role in lupus. Furthermore, we argue that aponecrosis as induced by P2X(7 )is a cell death mechanism with characteristics that potentially have particular relevance to disease pathogenesis

    Abnormal Speech Motor Control in Individuals with 16p11.2 Deletions.

    Speech and motor deficits are highly prevalent (>70%) in individuals with the 600 kb BP4-BP5 16p11.2 deletion; however, the mechanisms that drive these deficits are unclear, limiting our ability to target interventions and advance treatment. This study examined fundamental aspects of speech motor control in participants with the 16p11.2 deletion. To assess capacity for control of voice, we examined how accurately and quickly subjects changed the pitch of their voice within a trial to correct for a transient perturbation of the pitch of their auditory feedback. When compared to controls, 16p11.2 deletion carriers show an over-exaggerated pitch compensation response to unpredictable mid-vocalization pitch perturbations. We also examined sensorimotor adaptation of speech by assessing how subjects learned to adapt their sustained productions of formants (speech spectral peak frequencies important for vowel identity), in response to consistent changes in their auditory feedback during vowel production. Deletion carriers show reduced sensorimotor adaptation to sustained vowel identity changes in auditory feedback. These results together suggest that 16p11.2 deletion carriers have fundamental impairments in the basic mechanisms of speech motor control and these impairments may partially explain the deficits in speech and language in these individuals

    Recent experimental work has concentrated on the study of resultant force and pressure distribution on the stepped barrier designated as Case 5 (W. M. Simpson, Serial 1057, 6 Aug 1953 / J. H . Carr). Case 5 barrier has a plane vertical front face extending the two feet from bottom to still-water surface. Above still-water level are five steps, each of 2. 4-in. rise and tread. These dimensions, to a 20:1 scale, represent the prescribed prototype depth of 40 feet and the rise and tread of four feet each. The separate model barriers for resultant force and for pressure distribution measurements are each cast of aluminum. Vertical ribs at the rear provide rigidity and serve as convenient mounting surfaces
