    Evaluation of Confidence Using Motivational Interviewing Skills Before and After In-Person Training Workshop

    Motivational interviewing (MI) is a skill used to help individuals make positive behavior changes and may be beneficial for those who work with undergraduate students. A new training, comprised of online content followed by an in-person workshop, was created and offered to staff members working directly with students at Iowa State University. The aim of this study was to evaluate confidence for using MI-related components pre and post an in-person workshop. To do so, participants completed a survey regarding their confidence in using MI-related skills before and after the workshop. From the survey results, a paired t-test was conducted to examine differences, and effect size was calculated to examine the magnitude of this difference. A significant difference was found pre to post with a small-to-moderate effect size, suggesting the in-person workshop was an important component for building self-efficacy to implement principles of MI in future conversations with students

    Peer Health Coach Training Practicum: Evidence from a Flipped Classroom

    Health coaching is a popular and effective method to assist individuals in gaining motivation to engage in healthy lifestyle behavior changes. The utility has led to an increased demand for trained individuals within the health care field. A new flipped classroom practicum course was developed to offer undergraduate students the opportunity to learn a foundational skill called motivational interviewing (MI) commonly used in health coaching. The 16-week, 2-credit course (led by three trained, graduate student health coaches) consists of online video lectures, in-class activities, experiential training, and supervised practicum experiences in health coaching. The aim of this study is to evaluate the process, impact, and outcomes of this new health coaching practicum. Measures consisted of surveys to assess participant satisfaction and course impact using 6-point Likert scales and were analyzed descriptively (mean ± SD), along with obtaining recorded MI conversations to evaluate fidelity of the training. These preliminary results support the utility of a flipped classroom practicum course designed to teach undergraduate students the skills of MI; however, extended practice with the use of MI may be needed for students to meet all proficiency levels

    Exercise Strengthens Central Nervous System Modulation of Pain in Fibromyalgia

    To begin to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the benefits of exercise for chronic pain, we assessed the influence of exercise on brain responses to pain in fibromyalgia (FM). Complete data were collected for nine female FM patients and nine pain-free controls (CO) who underwent two functional neuroimaging scans, following exercise (EX) and following quiet rest (QR). Brain responses and pain ratings to noxious heat stimuli were compared within and between groups. For pain ratings, there was a significant (p \u3c 0.05) Condition by Run interaction characterized by moderately lower pain ratings post EX compared to QR (d = 0.39–0.41) for FM but similar to ratings in CO (d = 0.10–0.26), thereby demonstrating that exercise decreased pain sensitivity in FM patients to a level that was analogous to pain-free controls. Brain responses demonstrated a significant within-group difference in FM patients, characterized by less brain activity bilaterally in the anterior insula following QR as compared to EX. There was also a significant Group by Condition interaction with FM patients showing less activity in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex following QR as compared to post-EX and CO following both conditions. These results suggest that exercise appeared to stimulate brain regions involved in descending pain inhibition in FM patients, decreasing their sensitivity to pain. Thus, exercise may benefit patients with FM via improving the functional capacity of the pain modulatory system

    Embodied Knowledge: Writing Researchers’ Bodies Into Qualitative Health Research

    After more than a decade of postpositivist health care research and an increase in narrative writing practices, social scientific, qualitative health research remains largely disembodied. The erasure of researchers’ bodies from conventional accounts of research obscures the complexities of knowledge production and yields deceptively tidy accounts of research. Qualitative health research could benefit significantly from embodied writing that explores the discursive relationship between the body and the self and the semantic challenges of writing the body by incorporating bodily details and experiences into research accounts. Researchers can represent their bodies by incorporating autoethnographic narratives, drawing on all of their senses, interrogating the connections between their bodily signifiers and research processes, and experimenting with the semantics of self and body. The author illustrates opportunities for embodiment with excerpts from an ethnography of a geriatric oncology team and explores implications of embodied writing for the practice of qualitative health research

    Intervening to reduce sedentary behavior in older adults – pilot results

    Background: Older adults spend most of their day in sedentary behavior (SB) (i.e., prolonged sitting), increasing risk for negative health outcomes, functional loss, and diminished ability for activities of daily living. The purpose of this study was to develop and pilot test an intervention designed to reduce SB in older adults that could be translated to communities. Methods: Two pilot studies implementing a 4-week SB intervention were conducted. SB,physical function, and health-related quality of life were measured via self-report and objective measures. Participants (N=21) completed assessments pre- and post-intervention (studies 1 and 2) and at follow-up (4-weeks post-intervention; study 2). Due to the pilot nature of this research, data were analyzed with Cohen’s d effect sizes to examine the magnitude of change in outcomes following the intervention. Results: Results for study 1 indicated moderate (d=0.53) decreases in accelerometry-obtained total SB and increases (d=0.52) in light intensity physical activity post-intervention. In study 2,there was a moderate decrease (d=0.57) in SB evident at follow-up. On average SB decreased by approximately 60 min/d in both studies. Also, there were moderate-to-large improvements in vitality (d=0.74; study 1) and gait speed (d=1.15; study 2) following the intervention. Further,the intervention was found to be feasible for staff to implement in the community. Conclusion: These pilot results informed the design of an ongoing federally funded randomized controlled trial with a larger sample of older adults from underserved communities. Effective,feasible, and readily-accessible interventions have potential to improve the health and function of older adults

    Simulating galaxy Clusters -II: global star formation histories and galaxy populations

    Cosmological (LambdaCDM) TreeSPH simulations of the formation and evolution of galaxy groups and clusters have been performed. The simulations invoke star formation, chemical evolution with non-instantaneous recycling, metal dependent radiative cooling, strong star burst and (optionally) AGN driven galactic super winds, effects of a meta-galactic UV field and thermal conduction. The properties of the galaxy populations in two clusters, one Virgo-like (T~3 keV) and one (sub) Coma-like (T~6 keV), are discussed. The global star formation rates of the cluster galaxies are found to decrease very significantly with time from redshift z=2 to 0, in agreement with observations. The total K-band luminosity of the cluster galaxies correlates tightly with total cluster mass, and for models without additional AGN feedback, the zero point of the relation matches the observed one fairly well. The match to observed galaxy luminosity functions is reasonable, except for a deficiency of bright galaxies (M_B < -20), which becomes increasingly significant with super-wind strength. Results of a high resolution test indicate that this deficiency is not due to ``over--merging''. The redshift evolution of the luminosity functions from z=1 to 0 is mainly driven by luminosity evolution, but also by merging of bright galaxies with the cD. The colour--magnitude relation of the cluster galaxies matches the observed "red sequence" very well and, on average, galaxy metallicity increases with luminosity. As the brighter galaxies are essentially coeval, the colour--magnitude relation results from metallicity rather than age effects, as observed.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures.     Physical activity (PA), especially vigorous-intensity PA, has been shown to be related to pain sensitivity. The relationship among PA levels and PA types on endogenous pain inhibition after exercise, termed exercise-induced hypoalgesia (EIH), remains unclear. Purpose: This studied examined the EIH response to pressure stimuli among college-age women of differing activity levels. Methods: Fifty women were tested. Pressure pain threshold (PPT) values were assessed before and immediately after isometric handgrip exercise to exhaustion in the right and left forearms. Participant's PA levels were assessed by wearing an accelerometer for seven consecutive days during waking hours, excluding water activities. Participants were classified into four PA groups: met the American College of Sports Medicine aerobic recommendations (AERO), met aerobic and resistance training recommendations (AERO + RT), insufficiently aerobically active but resistance trained (RT), and insufficiently active (IA) based on their measured and self-reported PA level and type. Results: AERO and AERO + RT had greater vigorous (P < 0.001) and total PA (P < 0.001) compared with RT and IA. EIH was observed for PPT in both right and left arms (P < 0.001), with PPT increasing 7.7% (529 +/- 236 vs 569 +/- 235 kPa) and 7.0% (529 +/- 299 vs 571 +/- 250 kPa) in the right and left forearms, respectively. EIH did not differ among activity groups (P = 0.82). PPT values were found to be inversely related to vigorous-intensity PA (r = -0.29). Conclusions: PA levels and types had no effect on endogenous pain inhibition after exercise in college-age women
