Neoclassicism in British Instrumental Music 1918-45

The early twentieth century saw music fracture into many individual dialects; one of the most significant of these was Neoclassicism. Given that the Neoclassical compositional aesthetic was so significant to early twentieth-century music there is relatively little written on Neoclassicism. While there has been research into the music of some British composers writing between 1918 and 1945 there has been no research into British Neoclassicism, or any attempt to create a universal model to define Neoclassical music. This thesis is an extension of the research carried out in my MA by Thesis Neoclassicism in the Music of William Alwyn which was inspired by his turn to Neoclassicism in 1938, particularly his Divertimento for Solo Flute. It will firstly examine the state of British music in the period 1918-45 to determine the factors influencing British composers to turn to the Neoclassical aesthetic. I will examine the roots of Neoclassicism through the French and German stems together with other manifestations of the style. I will argue that Neoclassicism is an aesthetic which represents a break from the preceding musical tradition since it looks back to pre-Romantic music for inspiration. I will outline a universal model for Neoclassicism which will attempt to reconcile the varying opinion on Neoclassicism by identifying four characteristics: old, new, borrowed, blue (anti-romantic). I will then apply that model to case studies provided by the instrumental music of ten British composers writing between 1918 and 1945. These composers will include those familiar to a general audience, but also those whose music will be less well- known

Neoclassicism in the Music of William Alwyn: Selected Works 1938-45

In 1938 William Alwyn made the radical decision to abandon his previous composition methods and based future works upon the neoclassical compositional aesthetic. The second work to emerge was the Divertimento for Solo Flute, a composition on a single stave with substantial implicit contrapuntal writing. This thesis will examine both the Continental European and British musical context in the period leading up to Alwyn’s 1938 compositional crisis in order to provide a model for neoclassicism. This model will be used to assess Alwyn’s neoclassical compositions to evaluate Alwyn as a composer in the light of his stated wish to become a Bach or Beethoven. It will also include a brief musical biography in order to contextualise Alwyn’s neoclassical compositions within the wider body of his work

On The Frontlines of Richer Metadata: Technical Services and TEI

With shrinking print collections and the increase in automation, technical services departments are looking for new ways to utilize their skills. Digital humanities projects offer the opportunity for technical services departments to expand their workflows while using skills they already possess. This article details Bowling Green State University’s technical services department’s project to use the digital humanities to make World War I soldiers’ letters available online using the metadata schema, Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). By partnering with special collections and increasing staff focus on metadata, the department has created a new path forward that can be replicated at other institutions

Reimagining Community Engagement to Increase Resilience to Climate Change in El Punto Neighborhood, Salem, Massachusetts

In November 2021, the Mauricio Gastón Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston partnered with the Woods Hole Group (WHG) to develop a community outreach strategy for the Climate Change Deep Dive Model, Alternative Analysis, and Targeted Outreach & Engagement project in the Point/Palmer Cove neighborhood (El Punto), in the city of Salem, MA. El Punto, including its residents, workers, infrastructure, and development areas, is particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts (such as sea level rise, storm surge, precipitation, and heat waves). Researchers from the Gaston institute engaged El Punto residents to: Increase the community’s knowledge of current and future climate change risks, vulnerabilities, and opportunities in El Punto; Learn from the community the best solutions to implement to prepare for climate change and reduce its impacts; and Build trust and strengthen relationships between the community members and the City of Salem for future collaboration and communication. We conducted: interviews with key informants who work in community organizations in the community and facilitated Community Mapping and Body Map Storytelling activities. Our engagement activities, which enabled us to hear what residents think about climate change, revealed a large set of other issues that compound the effect of climate change. If those issues are not addressed, it will be difficult for the City to get buy-in from the community for their climate change initiatives

Breastfeeding initiation and support: A literature review of what women value and the impact of early discharge

It is likely early discharge has an impact on the establishment of breastfeeding. Objective To critically appraise the evidence on what women value in relation to breastfeeding initiation and support, and investigate the impact early discharge can have on these values. Method A literature search was conducted for publications since 2005 using the following databases: Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medline, Scopus and PsycINFO; 21 primary articles were selected and included in the review. Findings There is no standard definition for ‘early discharge’ worldwide. Due to inconsistent definitions worldwide and minimal literature using a 24 h definition, research defining early discharge as up to 72 h postpartum is included. Seven key factors in relation to breastfeeding initiation and support following early discharge were identified, namely trust and security, consistent advice, practical breastfeeding support, breastfeeding education, comfortable environment, positive attitudes and emotional support, and individualised care. Conclusion The findings suggest individualised postnatal lengths of stay may be beneficial for the initiation of breastfeeding. Five values were not impacted by early discharge, but rather individual midwives’ practice. There is consensus in the literature that early discharge promoted a comfortable environment to support breastfeeding initiation. Wide variations in the definition of early postnatal discharge made it difficult to draw influential conclusions. Therefore, further research is required

The toll-like receptor 3 pathway in homeostasis, responses to injury and wound repair

In addition to their established roles in host defence, Toll-like Receptors (TLRs) have emerging roles in control of homeostasis, injury and wound repair. The dsRNA-sensing receptor, TLR3, has been particularly implicated in such processes in several different tissues including the skin, intestine and liver, as well as in the control of reparative mechanisms in the brain, heart and kidneys, following ischemia reperfusion injury. In this review, we provide an overview of TLR3 signalling and functions in inflammation, tissue damage and repair processes, as well as therapeutic opportunities that may arise in the future from knowledge of such pathways
