    While clinical sociologists have been part of American sociology for well over fifty years, it has been only the last decade that the field of clinical sociology has become formalized and has gained acceptance as having a legitimate role in contemporary sociology. The history and development of this renewed interest in clinical sociology parallels the history and development of the Clinical Sociology Association (currently called the Sociological Practice Association). This paper gives an overview of the movement, differentiates current uses of the terms clinical sociology, applied sociology, and sociological practice, and discusses directions for the next decade

    Dementia is rapidly becoming a prominent public health issue, with its prevalence in the Australian population predicted to rise by 251% in 2050 (Jorm, Dear & Burgess, 2005). “Dementia” is a generic psychological term used to describe the gradual decline in cognitive functioning which, in turn, causes a decline in many everyday functions (Rabins, Lyketsos & Steele, 2006). This decline in everyday functions includes a decline in language skills and consequently, communication (Thompson, 1987; 2008). There is a growing recognition that many of the everyday difficulties associated with caring for individuals with dementia are linked to these communication difficulties

    To more adequately meet the needs for the decade ahead, it is essential that sociology departments evaluate their existing curricula and plan new programs or concentrations that will interest and attract students. Using the example of clinical sociology, this article focuses on general guidelines for developing a variety of program models in sociological practice. The guidelines are divided into the three parts of assessment, planning, and implementation, and an inventory of ideas and suggestions are given for each phase. Relevant issues of the importance of labels, leadership and independence, and rationales for program development are discussed

    ARE DANCERS SYMMETRICAL DURING SINGLE LEG AND DOUBLE LEGGED LANDINGS?

    The effect of limb preference on lower extremity function and performance was examined in young healthy dancers. Fifteen elite adolescent dancers performed 15 consecutive single leg hops on each leg and 3 rebound jumps onto two triaxial force platforms. To identify limb preference the Waterloo Footedness Questionnaire was administered. Functional symmetry indices (SI) were calculated for the peak landing forces, and limb dominance was identified as the limb producing the greatest take-off power during the rebound jumps. Significant asymmetry was identified in the landing performance of the dancers. However no relationship was found between limb preference and limb dominance of the dancers. In conclusion, dance teachers should aim to achieve safer landing strategies by developing ambidextrous movement in young dancers

Then they write a short comparative paper based on the class Instagram images. These short papers culminate in a final paper. Hallie Scott, the creator of the assignment, notes in the assignment description, “By requiring students to build on their Instagram posts through written analyses, Parts 2 and 3 of the assignment reinforce the connections made in Part 1 and further encourage original analysis (as well as discourage plagiarism.) They also strengthen visual and contextual analytic skills while directly demonstrating how these skills apply to the contemporary environment.” This assignment demonstrates scaffolding as low-stakes assignments lead to a high-stakes assignment. The faculty member has the opportunity to assess student learning periodically prior to the final high stakes assignment, allowing for faculty member feedback and guidance in the process.
