Context. The asteroseismic exploitation of long period, g-mode hot B subdwarf pulsators (sdBVs), undermined so far by limitations associated with ground-based observations, has now become possible, thanks to high quality data obtained from space such as those recently gathered with the CoRoT (COnvection, ROtation, and planetary Transits) satellite. Aims. We propose a detailed seismic analysis of the sdBVs star KPD 0629-0016, the first compact pulsator monitored with CoRoT, using the g-mode pulsations recently uncovered by that space-borne observatory during short run SRa03. Methods. We use a forward modeling approach on the basis of our latest sdB models, which are now suitable for the accurate com- putation of the g-mode pulsation properties. The simultaneous match of the independent periods observed in KPD 0629-0016 with those of the models leads objectively to the identification of the pulsation modes and, more importantly, to the determination of the structural and core parameters of the star. Results. The optimal model we found closely reproduces the 18 observed periods retained in our analysis at a 0.23% level on av- erage. These are identified as low-degree (l = 1 and 2), intermediate-order (k = −9 through −74) g-modes. The structural and core parameters for KPD 0629-0016 are the following (formal fitting errors only): Teff = 26 290 ± 530 K, log g = 5.450 ± 0.034, M∗ = 0.471 ± 0.002 M⊙, log (Menv/M∗) = −2.42 ± 0.07, log (1 − Mcore/M∗) = −0.27 ± 0.01, and Xcore(C+O) = 0.41 ± 0.01. We addition- ally derive an age of 42.6 ± 1.0 Myr after the zero-age extreme horizontal branch, the radius R = 0.214 ± 0.009 R⊙, the luminosity L = 19.7 ± 3.2 L⊙, the absolute magnitude MV = 4.23 ± 0.13, the reddening index E(B − V) = 0.128 ± 0.023, and the distance d = 1190 ± 115 pc. Conclusions. The advent of high-precision time-series photometry from space with instruments like CoRoT now allows as demon- strated with KPD 0629-0016 the full exploitation of g-modes as deep probes of the internal structure of these stars, in particular for determining the mass of the convective core and its chemical composition.Peer reviewe

Eléments of an Anthropologie al Semiology of Mental Health Problems among Bambara, Soninké and Bwa in MaliThe narratives of people with mental health problems among several ethnie groups in Mali lead one to observe that popular semiology (markers which serve to identify the présence of a problem) is organized around several key catégories which vary according to one's ethnicity. Thèse catégories, présent among particular groups, refer to relationship dynamics, cultural values, the concept of « self » and to the vision of the world. This analysis focuses on the comparison between the relative importance of relationship problems and isolation be-havior, the particular connotations of thèse behaviors and their place in the narrative and semiological webs of the Bambara, Soninké and Bwa. Local sémiologies are shown to be rooted in the culturally determined supernarrative context as well as in général urbanization processes. The analysis contrasts the articulation of narratives to the cultural configurations which serve to give them meaning

A corpus-driven account of the noun classes and genders in Northern Sotho

This article offers a distributional corpus analysis of the Northern Sotho noun and gender system. The aim is twofold: first, to assess whether the existing descriptions of the noun class system in Northern Sotho are corroborated by information provided by the analysis of a large electronic corpus for this language, with specific reference to singular-plural pairings, and second, to present a number of novel visualisation aids to characterise a noun class system (in a radar diagram) and a noun gender system (using a two-directional weighted representation) for Northern Sotho in particular, and for any Bantu language in general. The findings include the discovery of two new genders in Northern Sotho (i.e. class pairs 1/6 and 3/10), and also indicate that the Northern Sotho noun class system, and by extension any one for Bantu, should be seen as dynamic. The research by the first author was funded by the Special Research Fund of Ghent University.http://www.tandfonline.com/loi/rall202017-06-30hb2016African Language

Activated protein C increases sensitivity to vasoconstriction in rabbit Escherichia coli endotoxin-induced shock

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of activated protein C (aPC) on vascular function, endothelial injury, and haemostasis in a rabbit endotoxin-induced shock model. METHOD: This study included 22 male New Zealand rabbits weighing 2.5 to 3 kg each. In vitro vascular reactivity, endothelium CD31-PECAM1 immunohistochemistry, plasma coagulation factors and monocyte tissue factor (TF) expression were performed 5 days (D5) after onset of endotoxic shock (initiated by 0.5 mg/kg intravenous bolus of Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS)) with or without treatment with aPC injected as an intravenous 2 mg/kg bolus 1 hour after LPS (LPS+aPC group and LPS group, respectively). RESULTS: LPS decreased the sensitivity to phenylephrine (PE) in aortic rings without endothelium (E-) when compared to E- rings from the control group (p < 0.05). This was abolished by N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester and not observed in E- rings from aPC-treated rabbits. Although aPC failed to decrease monocyte TF expression in endotoxinic animals at D5, aPC treatment restored the endothelium-dependent sensitivity in response to PE (2.0 ± 0.2 μM in rings with endothelium (E+) versus 1.0 ± 0.2 μM in E- rings (p < 0.05) in the LPS+aPC group versus 2.4 ± 0.3 μM in E+ rings versus 2.2 ± 0.2 μM in E- rings (p value not significant), in the LPS group). Endotoxin-induced de-endothelialisation was reduced by aPC at D5 (28.5 ± 2.3% in the LPS+aPC group versus 40.4 ± 2.4% in the LPS group, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: These data indicate that aPC increased the sensitivity to a vasoconstrictor agent (PE) associated with restoration of endothelial modulation, and protected against endothelial histological injury in endotoxin-induced shock. It failed to inhibit TF expression at D5 after LPS injection

Differential response of bovine mammary epithelial cells to Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli agonists of the innate immune system

Mastitis caused by Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus is a major pathology of dairy cows. To better understand the differential response of the mammary gland to these two pathogens, we stimulated bovine mammary epithelial cells (bMEC) with either E. coli crude lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or with S. aureus culture supernatant (SaS) to compare the transcriptomic profiles of the initial bMEC response. By using HEK 293 reporter cells for pattern recognition receptors, the LPS preparation was found to stimulate TLR2 and TLR4 but not TLR5, Nod1 or Nod2, whereas SaS stimulated TLR2. Biochemical analysis revealed that lipoteichoic acid, protein A and alpha-hemolysin were all present in SaS, and bMEC were found to be responsive to each of these molecules. Transcriptome profiling revealed a core innate immune response partly shared by LPS and SaS. However, LPS induced expression of a significant higher number of genes and the fold changes were of greater magnitude than those induced by SaS. Microarray data analysis suggests that the activation pathways and the early chemokine and cytokine production preceded the defense and stress responses. A major differential response was the activation of the type I IFN pathway by LPS but not by SaS. The higher upregulation of chemokines (Cxcl10, Ccl2, Ccl5 and Ccl20) that target mononuclear leucocytes by LPS than by SaS is likely to be related to the differential activation of the type I IFN pathway, and could induce a different profile of the initial recruitment of leucocytes. The MEC responses to the two stimuli were different, as LPS was associated with NF-kappaB and Fas signaling pathways, whereas SaS was associated with AP-1 and IL-17A signaling pathways. It is noteworthy that at the protein level secretion of TNF-alpha and IL-1beta was not induced by either stimulus. These results suggest that the response of MEC to diffusible stimuli from E. coli and S. aureus contributes to the onset of the response with differential leucocyte recruitment and distinct inflammatory and innate immune reactions of the mammary gland to infection

Evaluation of a Technique to Trap Lemmings Under the Snow

We attempted to live trap lemmings under the snow in their preferred winter habitat at two sites in the Canadian Arctic using chimney-like boxes. Lemmings used the boxes during winter, but we had very low trapping success in April and May. During spring trapping, in contrast to most of the winter, subnivean temperatures became colder than ambient air temperatures. We hypothesize that our low success in spring resulted from lemmings’ leaving the deeper snow areas where our boxes were located and moving to shallower snow or exposed tundra. We suggest that the trapping boxes could be successful if trapping occurred earlier during winter.
