    Jóvenes en México y sus retos en tiempos de pandemia

    México es reconocido como un país de jóvenes. Sin embargo, la construcción social del concepto “juventud” ha evolucionado en las últimas décadas, así como sus características y problemáticas sociales. El objetivo del trabajo es analizar algunas de las características demográficas, educativas y laborales de los jóvenes en México, así como los retos que enfrentan en estas dimensiones a partir de la pandemia provocada por la COVID-19. El artículo parte de una perspectiva sociológica y demográfica, y utiliza una metodología mixta considerando el análisis documental relativo a los conceptos principales en torno a la problemática y el análisis demográfico de los datos estadísticos de los censos de población del INEGI, la Encuesta Nacional de Juventud y otras fuentes estadísticas, considerando las implicaciones de la situación de pandemia en México. Como conclusión, se identifican los principales retos para el empleo de los jóvenes que se presentan ante la pandemia en México. El análisis de la situación de los jóvenes cobrará cada vez mayor relevancia en el diseño e implementación de políticas públicas que coadyuven a la generación de oportunidades para la juventud mexicana

    Neonatal face-to-face interactions promote later social behaviour in infant rhesus monkeys

    In primates, including humans, mothers engage in face-to-face interactions with their infants, with frequencies varying both within and across species. However, the impact of this variation in face-to-face interactions on infant social development is unclear. Here we report that infant monkeys (Macaca mulatta) who engaged in more neonatal face-to-face interactions with mothers have increased social interactions at 2 and 5 months. In a controlled experiment, we show that this effect is not due to physical contact alone: monkeys randomly assigned to receive additional neonatal face-to-face interactions (mutual gaze and intermittent lip-smacking) with human caregivers display increased social interest at 2 months, compared with monkeys who received only additional handling.     D-2-hydroxyglutarate interferes with HIF-1α stability skewing T-cell metabolism towards oxidative phosphorylation and impairing Th17 polarization

    D-2-hydroxyglutarate (D-2HG) is released by various types of malignant cells including acute myeloid leukemia (AML) blasts carrying isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) gain-of-function mutations. D-2HG acting as an oncometabolite promotes proliferation, anoikis, and differentiation block of hematopoietic cells in an autocrine fashion. However, prognostic impact of IDH mutations and high D-2HG levels remains controversial and might depend on the overall mutational context. An increasing number of studies focus on the permissive environment created by AML blasts to promote immune evasion. Impact of D-2HG on immune cells remains incompletely understood. Here, we sought out to investigate the effects of D-2HG on T-cells as key mediators of anti-AML immunity. D-2HG was efficiently taken up by T-cells in vitro, which is in line with high 2-HG levels measured in T-cells isolated from AML patients carrying IDH mutations. T-cell activation was slightly impacted by D-2HG. However, D-2HG triggered HIF-1a protein destabilization resulting in metabolic skewing towards oxidative phosphorylation, increased regulatory T-cell (Treg) frequency, and reduced T helper 17 (Th17) polarization. Our data suggest for the first time that D-2HG might contribute to fine tuning of immune responses

    Motivational Interviewing as an intervention to increase adolescent self-efficacy and promote weight loss: Methodology and design

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Childhood obesity is associated with serious physiological and psychological consequences including type 2 diabetes, higher rates of depression and low self-esteem. With the population of overweight and obese youth increasing, appropriate interventions are needed that speak to the issue of readiness to change and motivation to maintain adherence to healthy behavior changes. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a method of therapy found to resolve ambivalence, enhance intrinsic motivation and promote confidence in a person's ability to make behavior changes. While MI has shown promise in the adult obesity literature as effecting positive lifestyle change, little is known about the effectiveness of MI with overweight and obese youth. This study aims to: 1) demonstrate that MI is an effective intervention for increasing a person's self-efficacy; 2) demonstrate that exposure to MI will facilitate healthy behavior changes; 3) explore psychological changes related to participation in MI and 4) compare physiological and anthropometric outcomes before and after intervention.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>The current investigation is a prospective study conducted with ongoing participants who regularly attend an outpatient pediatric care center for weight-loss. Overweight youth (BMI > 85<sup>th </sup>%ile) between the ages of 10 and 18 who meet eligibility criteria will be recruited. Participants will be randomly assigned to a control group (social skills training) or a treatment group (MI). Participants will meet with the therapist for approximately 30 minutes prior to seeing the dietician, over the course of 6 months. Participants will also undergo a full day assessment at the beginning and end of psychology intervention to evaluate body fat, and metabolic risk (screening for diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and fitness level). The paper and pencil portions of the assessments as well as the clinical testing will occur at baseline and at the conclusion of the intervention (6 months) with a repeat assessment 6 months following the completion of the intervention.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Results from this study are expected to enhance our understanding of the efficacy of MI with children and adolescents who are overweight or obese.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>Current Controlled Trials #<a href="http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00326404">NCT00326404</a>.</p

    Acute oxytocin improves memory and gaze following in male but not female nursery-reared infant macaques

    Rationale: Exogenous oxytocin administration is widely reported to improve social cognition in human and nonhuman primate adults. Risk factors of impaired social cognition, however, emerge in infancy. Early interventions—when plasticity is greatest—are critical to reverse negative outcomes. Objective: We tested the hypothesis that oxytocin may exert similar positive effects on infant social cognition, as in adults. To test this idea, we assessed the effectiveness of acute, aerosolized oxytocin on two foundational social cognitive skills: working memory (i.e., ability to briefly hold and process information) and social gaze (i.e., tracking the direction of others’ gaze) in 1-month-old nursery-reared macaque monkeys (Macaca mulatta). We did not predict sex differences, but we included sex as a factor in our analyses to test whether our effects would be generalizable across both males and females. Results: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled design, we found that females were more socially skilled at baseline compared to males, and that oxytocin improved working memory and gaze following, but only in males. Conclusions: These sex differences, while unexpected, may be due to interactions with gonadal steroids and may be relevant to sexually dimorphic disorders of social cognition, such as male-biased autism spectrum disorder, for which oxytocin has been proposed as a potential treatment. In sum, we report the first evidence that oxytocin may influence primate infant cognitive abilities. Moreover, these behavioral effects appear sexually dimorphic, highlighting the importance of considering sex differences.     Review of Mindfulness-Related Interventions to Modify Eating Behaviors in Adolescents

    There are few well-established treatments for adolescent eating disorders, and for those that do exist, remission rates are reported to be between 30 and 40%. There is a need for the development and implementation of novel treatment approaches. Mindfulness approaches have shown improvements in eating disorder-related psychopathology in adults and have been suggested for adolescents. The present review identifies and summarizes studies that have used mindfulness approaches to modify eating behaviors and to treat eating disorders in adolescents. Focused searches were conducted in Embase, Medline, and PsycINFO, and identified articles were checked for relevance. A small number of studies (n = 15) were designated as appropriate for inclusion in the review. These studies were divided into those that focused on the promotion of healthy eating/the prevention of disordered eating (n = 5), those that concentrated on targeted prevention among high risk adolescents (n = 5), and those that focused on clinical eating disordered adolescents (n = 5). Thirteen of the 15 studies reviewed reported at least one positive association between mindfulness treatment techniques and reduced weight/shape concerns, dietary restraint, decreased body mass index (BMI), eating in the absence of hunger (EAH), binge eating, increased willingness to eat novel healthy foods, and reduced eating disorder psychopathology. In summary, incorporating mindfulness to modify eating behaviors in adolescent non-clinical and clinical samples is still in the early stages, with a lack of data showing clear evidence of acceptability and efficacy. Further studies and preferably controlled conditions are warranted

    D-2-Hydroxyglutarate and L-2-Hydroxyglutarate Inhibit IL-12 Secretion by Human Monocyte-Derived Dendritic Cells

    Mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) or a reduced expression of L-2-hydroxyglutarate (HG)-dehydrogenase result in accumulation of D-2-HG or L-2-HG, respectively, in tumor tissues. D-2-HG and L-2-HG have been shown to affect T-cell differentiation and activation; however, effects on human myeloid cells have not been investigated so far. In this study we analyzed the impact of D-2-HG and L-2-HG on activation and maturation of human monocyte-derived dendritic cells (DCs). 2-HG was taken up by DCs and had no impact on cell viability but diminished CD83 expression after Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) stimulation. Furthermore, D-2-HG and L-2-HG significantly reduced IL-12 secretion but had no impact on other cytokines such as IL-6, IL-10 or TNF. Gene expression analyses of the IL-12 subunits p35/IL-12A and p40/IL-12B in DCs revealed decreased expression of both subunits. Signaling pathways involved in LPS-induced cytokine expression (NFkB, Akt, p38) were not altered by D-2-HG. However, 2-HG reprogrammed LPS-induced metabolic changes in DCs and increased oxygen consumption. Addition of the ATP synthase inhibitor oligomycin to DC cultures increased IL-12 secretion and was able to partially revert the effect of 2-HG. Our data show that both enantiomers of 2-HG can limit activation of DCs in the tumor environment
