The Role of 3D Printed Facsimiles in Fulfilling Museum Visitors’ Desire to Touch

By nature, humans have a desire to touch the things they encounter in daily life. Museums are no exception to this desire, even though museum objects are rarely available for visitor handling. This thesis explores the question: “can accurate 3D printed facsimiles help fulfill the desire of visitors to touch museum objects?” For this project and case study, I selected, and 3D scanned a museum object, which was then recreated via 3D printing. The reproduction was then put on display alongside the original object, and a visitor study was conducted to see if interacting with the facsimile while seeing the original object satisfied the desire of the visitor to touch the object. From this study, I determined that the facsimile proved to be a satisfactory replacement for the original object in terms of touch – in this limited context. This research may be of use to museums and staff looking to meet visitor needs without compromising the institutional commitment to preservation, care, and stewardship of collections

(In)visible Witnesses: Young people's views of images of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians on UK children's television from a gender perspective (Research Briefing)

This briefing is based on the (In)visible Witnesses study by a team of researchers led by Liz Whitelegg and Richard Holliman at the Open University. This project is one of five commissioned by the UKRC to explore issues around the role of the media and representations of women in STEM. This briefing looks at the (re)construction of gendered representations of STEM on children's television and investigates the ways in which these images affected children's and young people's perceptions of STEM. The content of two weeks of children's television was analysed. Following this, 45 children and young people were involved in a study which looked at how children and young people made sense of the STEM they watch on television. Several methods were used to elicit children's and young people's perceptions of STEM and their place within these fields in the future - a questionnaire, 'draw-a-scientist' test, reflective writing about their future selves as scientists and the creation of a 'storyboard' for a TV programme

Exploring the Impact of Mentorship on the Leadership Trajectory of Black Clergywomen in the Black Church

This research project examined the impact of mentorship on the leadership trajectory of Black clergywomen within the Black Church. The aim was to identify the gaps and gifts within the Black Church that contribute to and challenge Black clergywomen’s thriving and development in pastoral ministry. Theological foundations for this study included womanism and Black liberation, wherein the experiences, stories, and voices of the most marginalized were centered and served as starting points for interrogation. Using a qualitative, multiple-case study design, I collected detailed information about the mentoring experiences of 10 Black clergywomen who were serving in Black congregations within King and Pierce Counties in Washington State. I asked eight open-ended questions to encourage and facilitate reflective responses, which were then carefully examined for common themes and coded. The narratives collected through these interviews focused on the individual stories and experiences of Black clergywomen within the Black Church, and provided a more in-depth picture of the impact mentoring experiences have on pastoral leadership. The goal of this study was to develop a mechanism for Black clergywomen within the Black Church to receive effective mentoring, opportunities for promotion, and access to safe supportive networks where their development and thriving as ministry leaders is encouraged
