Nanometers-thick self-organized Fe stripes: bridging the gap between surfaces and magnetic materials
We have fabricated 5nm-high Fe(110) stripes by self-organized (SO) growth on
a slightly vicinal R(110)/Al2O3(11-20) surface, with R=Mo, W. Remanence,
coercivity and domain patterns were observed at room temperature (RT). This
contrasts with conventional SO epitaxial systems, that are superparamagnetic or
even non-magnetic at RT due to their flatness. Our process should help to
overcome superparamagnetism without compromise on the lateral size if SO
systems are ever to be used in applications
Growth modes of Fe(110) revisited: a contribution of self-assembly to magnetic materials
We have revisited the epitaxial growth modes of Fe on W(110) and Mo(110), and
propose an overview or our contribution to the field. We show that the
Stranski-Krastanov growth mode, recognized for a long time in these systems, is
in fact characterized by a bimodal distribution of islands for growth
temperature in the range 250-700°C. We observe firstly compact islands
whose shape is determined by Wulff-Kaischev's theorem, secondly thin and flat
islands that display a preferred height, ie independant from nominal thickness
and deposition procedure (1.4nm for Mo, and 5.5nm for W on the average). We
used this effect to fabricate self-organized arrays of nanometers-thick stripes
by step decoration. Self-assembled nano-ties are also obtained for nucleation
of the flat islands on Mo at fairly high temperature, ie 800°C. Finally,
using interfacial layers and solid solutions we separate two effects on the
preferred height, first that of the interfacial energy, second that of the
continuously-varying lattice parameter of the growth surface.Comment: 49 pages. Invited topical review for J. Phys.: Condens. Matte
Nucleation of magnetisation reversal, from nanoparticles to bulk materials
We review models for the nucleation of magnetisation reversal, i.e. the
formation of a region of reversed magnetisation in an initially magnetically
saturated system. For small particles models for collective reversal, either
uniform (Stoner-Wohlfarth model) or non-uniform like curling, provide good
agreement between theory and experiment. For microscopic objects and thin
films, we consider two models, uniform (Stoner-Wohlfarth) reversal inside a
nucleation volume and a droplet model, where the free energy of an inverse
bubble is calculated taking into account volume energy (Zeeman energy) and
surface tension (domain wall energy). In macroscopic systems, inhomogeneities
in magnetic properties cause a distribution of energy barriers for nucleation,
which strongly influences effects of temperature and applied field on
magnetisation reversal. For these systems, macroscopic material parameters like
exchange interaction, spontaneous magnetisation and magnetic anisotropy can
give an indication of the magnetic coercivity, but exact values for nucleation
fields are, in general, hard to predict.Comment: 12 pages; Published in a Special Issue of the C. R. Physique devoted

Couches épitaxiales magnétiques à paramètre cristallin ajustable
The main aim of this thesis is to quantify the relation ship between misfit or a crystalline parameter different from the bulk one on one side and the behaviour of growth and magnetic properties on the other side. An original procedure, based on alternative pulsed laser depositions (PLD) from two different targets, has been developed to fabricate high quality buffer layers with a tunable lattice parameter and an independently controllable surface energy. This procedure is applied to the study of effects due to misfit and chemical interface on the growth and magnetic properties of thick selforganized iron stripes. Self-organized stripes of Fe were fabricated by PLD with a height up to five nanometers in contrast with results found in the literature (one or two atomic layers in height). This new elevated thickness allowed us to obtain remanence, coercivity, and/or splitting into stable magnetic domains at room temperature. Magnetic domains were revealed by X-ray circular magnetic dichroisme. Finally, we have proposed an analytical model of magnetization reversal in flat dots and stripes. This model predicts the values of both reversal and nucleation fields as function of the dot thickness.
