Clinical significance of soluble-triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (sTREM-1) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
AbstractAim of the workTo assess serum concentrations of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (sTREM-1) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, and correlate them with the main clinical, serological, radiological features and functional capacity of RA patients.Patients and methodsSera from 61 RA patients, and 30 healthy controls were assayed for sTREM-1 by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbant Assay. RA disease activity was assessed using 28-joint disease activity score (DAS-28). Assessment of patient’s functional capacity was done using modified health assessment questionnaire (mHAQ). Standardized X-rays were done to all RA participants and evaluated according to Larsen scoreResultsSerum levels of sTREM-1 were significantly higher in RA patients vs healthy controls (57.61±28.87 and 43.72±10.64ng/ml; p=0.027). These levels were higher in patients with severe disease activity (68.27±36.14ng/ml) than those with mild and moderate disease activity (43.50±6.49ng/ml and 47.52±12.26ng/ml, respectively; p=0.008). On the contrary, no significant difference was found in levels of sTREM-1 in patients with extra-articular involvement or positive RF than those without. Levels of sTREM-1 showed a highly significant positive correlation with DAS-28 (P=0.001), ESR (P=0.02) and mHAQ (p=0.003).There were no significant correlations between sTREM-1 level with age, disease duration, morning stiffness, nor radiological narrowing and erosion scores.ConclusionLevels of sTREM-1 were elevated in RA patients and correlated significantly with clinical and laboratory markers of disease activity as well as functional disability (as determined by mHAQ). To confirm our results we propose that larger scale, multicenter studies with longer evaluation periods are needed
Formulation of Synthesized Zinc Oxide Nanopowder into Hybrid Beads for Dye Separation
The sol-gel prepared zinc oxide nanopowder was immobilized onto alginate-polyvinyl alcohol polymer blend to fabricate novel biocomposite beads. Various physicochemical characterization techniques have been utilized to identify the crystalline, morphological, and chemical structures of both the fabricated zinc oxide hybrid beads and their corresponding zinc oxide nanopowder. The thermal stability investigations demonstrate that ZnO nanopowder stability dramatically decreased with its immobilization into the polymeric alginate and PVA matrix. The formulated beads had very strong mechanical strength and they are difficult to be broken up to 1500 rpm. Moreover, these hybrid beads are chemically stable at the acidic media (pH < 7) especially within the pH range of 2–7. Finally, the applicability of the formulated ZnO hybrid beads for C.I. basic blue 41 (BB41) decolorization from aqueous solution was examined
Novel Green Micro-Synthesis of Graphene-Titanium Dioxide Nano- Composites with Photo-Electrochemical Properties
Background: Graphene-Titanium dioxide nano-composite forms a very promising material in the field of photo-electrochemical research.
Methods: In this study, a novel environment-friendly synthesis method was developed to produce well-distributed anatase nano-titanium dioxide spherical particles on the surface of graphene sheets. This novel method has great advantages over previously developed methods of producing graphenetitanium dioxide nanocomposites (GTNCs). High calcination temperature 650°C was used in the preparation of nano titanium dioxide, and chemical exfoliation for graphene synthesis and GTNC was performed by our novel method of depositing titanium dioxide nanoparticles on graphene sheets using a Y-shaped micro-reactor under a controlled pumping rate with minimal use of chemicals.
Results: The physiochemical and crystallographic properties of the GTNC were confirmed by TEM, XRD, FTIR and EDX measurements, confirming process repeatability. Spherical nano-titanium dioxide was produced in the anatase phase with very high crystallinity and small particle diameters ranging from 9 nm to 25 nm, also the as prepared graphene (RGO) exhibited minimal flake folding and a high carbon content of 81.28% with a low oxygen-to-carbon atomic ratio of 0.172 and GTNCs produced by our novel method had a superior loading content, a homogeneous distribution and a 96.6% higher content of titanium dioxide particles on the graphene sheets compared with GTNCs prepared with the one-pot method.
Conclusion: For its photoelectrochemical properties, chronoamperometry showed that GTNC sample (2) had a higher peak current of 60 μA compared with that of GTNC sample (1), which indicates that the separation and transfer of electron-hole pairs are better in the case of GTNC sample (2) and according to the LSV results, the generation of photocurrent in the samples can be observed through multiple on-off cycles, which indicates that the electrodes are stable and that the photocurrent is quite reversible
Intensification of the Rate of Diffusion-controlled Electrochemical and Catalytic Reactions at a Helical Coil by a Fixed Bed Turbulence Promoter
Intensifications of the rate of diffusion-controlled electrochemical and catalytic reactions taking place at the outer surface of a helical coil imbedded in an inert fixed bed of cylinders acting as turbulence promoters was studied using the electrochemical technique. The technique involved measuring the limiting current of the cathodic reduction of K3Fe(CN)6 in a large excess of NaOH as a supporting electrolyte. The variables studied were solution velocity, packing cylinder diameter, helical coil tube diameter, and physical properties of the solution. The rate of mass transfer at the outer surface of the coil was found to increase with increasing solution velocity and decreasing packing cylinder diameter, helical coil tube diameter was found to have a little effect on the rate of mass transfer. Opportunistic Parasites among Immunosuppressed Children in Minia District, Egypt
A total of 450 stool samples were collected from inpatient and outpatient clinics of Pediatric Department, Minia University Hospital, Minia District, Egypt. Two groups of patients were studied, including 200 immunosuppressed and 250 immunocompetent children. Stool samples were subjected to wet saline and iodine mounts. A concentration technique (formol-ether sedimentation method) was carried out for stool samples diagnosed negative by wet saline and iodine mounts. Samples were stained by 2 different methods; acid fast stain (modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain) and Giemsa stain. Total 188 cases (94%) were diagnosed positive for parasitic infections among immunosuppressed children, whereas 150 cases (60%) were positive in immunocompetent children (P<0.0001). The most common protozoan infection in immunosuppressed group was Cryptosporidium parvum (60.2%), followed by Blastocystis hominis (12.1%), Isospora belli (9.7%), and Cyclospora caytenensis (7.8%). On the other hand, Entamoeba histolytica (24.6%) and Giardia lamblia (17.6%) were more common than other protozoans in immunocompetent children
Potencijalna profilaktička uloga aminogvanidina u diabetičkoj retinopatiji i nefropatiji u eksperimentalnih životinja
This study sought to determine the potential prophylactic and antioxidant effects of aminoguanidine in experimentally induced diabetes. Four groups of Wistar rats, each composed of ten rats, were used. Two groups served as control. In group 3, diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (65 mg kg1). In group 4, diabetes was induced and treated with aminoguanidine 100 mg kg1 daily orally for 3 months. Levels of serum glucose, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and erythrocytes catalase were analyzed on day 90 of the experiment. Retinal and kidney specimens were examined histopathologically after sacrifice of the animals. A significant antioxidant effect of aminoguanidine and its prophylactic role in diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy were observed in experimental animals.U ovom radu ispitivano je potencijalno profilaktičko i antioksidativno djelovanje aminogvanidina u eksperimentalno induciranom dijabetesu. Ispitivanja su provedena na četiri skupine od 10 štakora. Dvije skupine bile su kontrolne skupine, u trećoj skupini dijabetes je induciran jednokratnom intraperitonealnom injekcijom streptozotocina 65 mg kg1, a u četvrtoj dijabetes je induciran i tretiran aminogvanidinom 100 mg kg1 dnevno, peroralno, tijekom 3 mjeseca. Devedeseti dan eksperimenta analizirane su koncentracije glukoze u serumu, glutation peroksidaze, glutation reduktaze i eritrocitne katalaze. Životinje su žrtvovane, a uzorci retine i bubrega ispitivani su histopatologiški. Uočen je značajni antioksidativni učinak aminogvanidina i njegova profilaktička uloga u dijabetičkoj retinopatiji i nefropatiji
Quality of Type 2 Diabetes Management in the States of The Co-Operation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf: A Systematic Review
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a growing, worldwide public health concern. Recent growth has been particularly dramatic in the states of The Co-operation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC), and these and other developing economies are at particular risk. We aimed to systematically review the quality of control of type 2 diabetes in the GCC, and the nature and efficacy of interventions. We identified 27 published studies for review. Studies were identified by systematic database searches. Medline and Embase were searched separately (via Dialog and Ovid, respectively; 1950 to July 2010 (Medline), and 1947 to July 2010 (Embase)) on 15/07/2009. The search was updated on 08/07/2010. Terms such as diabetes mellitus, non-insulin-dependent, hyperglycemia, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and Gulf States were used. Our search also included scanning reference lists, contacting experts and hand-searching key journals. Studies were judged against pre-determined inclusion/exclusion criteria, and where suitable for inclusion, data extraction/quality assessment was achieved using a specifically-designed tool. All studies wherein glycaemic-, blood pressure- and/or lipid- control were investigated (clinical and/or process outcomes) were eligible for inclusion. No limitations on publication type, publication status, study design or language of publication were imposed. We found the extent of control to be sub-optimal and relatively poor. Assessment of the efficacy of interventions was difficult due to lack of data, but suggestive that more widespread and controlled trial of secondary prevention strategies may have beneficial outcomes. We found no record of audited implementation of primary preventative strategies and anticipate that controlled trial of such strategies would also be useful
Contribution to the understanding of tribological properties of graphite intercalation compounds with metal chloride
Intrinsic tribological properties of lamellar compounds are usually attributed to the presence of van der Waals gaps in their structure through which interlayer interactions are weak. The controlled variation of the distances and interactions between graphene layers by intercalation of electrophilic species in graphite is used in order to explore more deeply the friction reduction properties of low-dimensional compounds. Three graphite intercalation compounds with antimony pentachloride, iron trichloride and aluminium trichloride are studied. Their tribological properties are correlated to their structural parameters, and the interlayer interactions are deduced from ab initio bands structure calculations
Human and Canine Echinococcosis Infection in Informal, Unlicensed Abattoirs in Lima, Peru
Echinococcus granulosus infections are a major public health problem in livestock-raising regions around the world. The life cycle of this tapeworm is sustained between dogs (definitive host, canine echinococcosis), and herbivores (intermediary host, cystic hydatid disease). Humans may also develop cystic hydatid disease. Echinococcosis is endemic in rural areas of Peru; nevertheless, its presence or the extension of the problem in urban areas is basically unknown. Migration into Lima, an 8-million habitant's metropolis, creates peripheral areas where animals brought from endemic areas are slaughtered without veterinary supervision. We identified eight informal, unlicensed abattoirs in a peripheral district of Lima and performed a cross-sectional study in to assess the prevalence of canine echinococcosis, evaluated by coproELISA followed by PCR evaluation and arecoline purge. Eight of 22 dogs (36%) were positive to coproELISA, and four (18%) were confirmed to be infected with E. granulosus tapeworms either by PCR or direct observation (purge). Later evaluation of the human population living in these abattoirs using abdominal ultrasound, chest X-rays and serology, found 3 out of 32 (9.3%) subjects with echinococcal cysts in the liver (two viable, one calcified), one of whom had also lung involvement and a strongly positive antibody response. Autochthonous transmission of E. granulosus is present in Lima. Informal, unlicensed abattoirs may be sources of infection to neighbouring people in this urban environment
Human eosinophil adhesion and degranulation stimulated with eotaxin and RANTES in vitro: Lack of interaction with nitric oxide
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Airway eosinophilia is considered a central event in the pathogenesis of asthma. The toxic components of eosinophils are thought to be important in inducing bronchial mucosal injury and dysfunction. Previous studies have suggested an interaction between nitric oxide (NO) and chemokines in modulating eosinophil functions, but this is still conflicting. In the present study, we have carried out functional assays (adhesion and degranulation) and flow cytometry analysis of adhesion molecules (VLA-4 and Mac-1 expression) to evaluate the interactions between NO and CC-chemokines (eotaxin and RANTES) in human eosinophils.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Eosinophils were purified using a percoll gradient followed by immunomagnetic cell separator. Cell adhesion and degranulation were evaluated by measuring eosinophil peroxidase (EPO) activity, whereas expression of Mac-1 and VLA-4 was detected using flow cytometry.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>At 4 h incubation, both eotaxin (100 ng/ml) and RANTES (1000 ng/ml) increased by 133% and 131% eosinophil adhesion, respectively. L-NAME alone (but not D-NAME) also increased the eosinophil adhesion, but the co-incubation of L-NAME with eotaxin or RANTES did not further affect the increased adhesion seen with chemokines alone. In addition, L-NAME alone (but not D-NAME) caused a significant cell degranulation, but it did not affect the CC-chemokine-induced cell degranulation. Incubation of eosinophils with eotaxin or RANTES, in absence or presence of L-NAME, did not affect the expression of VLA-4 and Mac-1 on eosinophil surface. Eotaxin and RANTES (100 ng/ml each) also failed to elevate the cyclic GMP levels above baseline in human eosinophils.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Eotaxin and RANTES increase the eosinophil adhesion to fibronectin-coated plates and promote cell degranulation by NO-independent mechanisms. The failure of CC-chemokines to affect VLA-4 and Mac-1 expression suggests that changes in integrin function (avidity or affinity) are rather involved in the enhanced adhesion.</p
