The role of women in fisheries activities in some selected fishing villages in the southern zone of Kainji Lake basin
Questionnaires containing 39 questions were prepared and administered to 50 women in ten fishing villages in the Southern Kainji Lake Basin to assess the level of women participation in fisheries activities. Results showed that 100% of the women interviewed were involved in fisheries activities and the following factors were considered. Age group between 20-30 years was 18%; 31-40 years; 30%; and above 40 years had the highest percentage of 40%. Also 98% of the women involve in fisheries activities were married while only 2% were not married. Muslin women constituted 82% while 18% were Christians. About 70% of Hausas were involved: no Igbos and Yorubas, while 30% were other tribes, which included Ijaws, Isokos and Urohobos. The percentage of women without education amounted to 62%, those women with Koranic education accounted for 22%, 14% had primary education while only 2% had secondary education. Few women were directly involved in fishing and statistical analysis showed that there was insignificant difference from village to village. All the women (100%) were involved in fish processing and storage (preservation) before sale. Only 26% of the women were not involved in fish marketing. Also 26% of the women made profits ranging from N500 to N1,000 per week, 24% make N1,000 to N1,500 per week, 12% made N1,500 to N2,000 and 38% made profit above N2,000. An analysis of the mediational effect of socio-cultural factors on student’s career choice outcomes in the built environment: applying the socio-cognitive career theory
Investigations into career development revealed the significant influence of social and cultural determinants, notably familial factors, on children’s professional aspirations. Such aspirations are moulded by their milieu, individual interests, academic environments, and socio-economic contexts. South Africa’s unique socio-political history introduces complexity into career development pathways. The intricate relationships between ethnicity, gender, and socio-economic backgrounds vis-a-vis career outcomes of South African youth remain underexplored. This research aimed to understand these influences within the construction domain, emphasising cognitive facets such as self-efficacy and societal endorsements. The Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) served as the foundational framework, with structural equation modelling employed for causal analysis. A focus was given to early university students, predominantly from Construction Management. The study showcased pathways for informed career decisions in construction and underscored the relevance of the SCCT, especially for women in traditionally male-dominated sectors. The study culminated in unveiling pathways for informed career decisions in construction, reinforcing the pertinence of the SCCT framework, especially concerning women in traditionally male-dominated spheres like construction. An investigation into BIM based detailed cost estimating and drivers to the adoption of BIM in quantity surveying practices
Purpose Although studies have shown the relevance of BIM (Building Information Modeling) in cost estimating process, efforts at investigating BIM based detailed cost estimating among professional quantity surveyors through quantitative approach are scanty. The purpose of this study is to identify and examine the usage of BIM based detailed cost estimating software; and assesses the drivers to BIM adoption within the Nigerian quantity surveying consulting firms. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive literature review, pilot study, and questionnaire survey were adopted. The survey targeted both the BIM users and non- BIM users’ quantity surveying consulting firms in Lagos, Nigeria. The data collected were analysed using frequency, percentage, mean score, standard deviation, Mann-Whitney test, and factor analysis. Findings The study found that 46.58% of quantity surveying consulting firms are aware of BIM and have adopted it for detailed cost estimating, while 49.32% of quantity surveying consulting firms are aware but have not adopted BIM based detailed cost estimating, and 4.10% of quantity surveying consulting firms are not aware at all. Also, the study identified various BIM based detailed cost estimating software used in quantity surveying practices and found that Microsoft excel is often used alongside 3D software; Autodesk QTO, Navisworks, Innovaya composer, and CostX respectively are prevalent BIM software used for detailed cost estimating. In addition, the study identified 21 drivers to the adoption of BIM in quantity surveying practices. The result of factor analysis grouped the 21 identified drivers into five principal factors: improved whole life cycle/design quality; enhanced decision and visualization; cost and time saving; marketing and support for quantity surveyor tasks; and government and client pressure. Practical implication This study provides significant insight into the application of BIM to quantity surveying consulting practices, thereby enables consultant quantity surveyors to make informed decisions to select BIM cost estimating software to suit their practices. Further, the study findings can be useful for individuals, clients’ and contractors’ quantity surveyors to be fully aware of the opportunities BIM could bring in relation to their service delivery. Originality/value Accurate cost estimating, effective cost monitoring and control are essential elements to a construction project success. Effective Supervision of Instruction in Nigerian Secondary Schools: Issues, Challenges and the Way Forward.
Every organisation either corporate or otherwise including the school exists essentially to achieve certain stated objectives. There is no way the goals and objectives of an organisation can be achieved without putting in place certain mechanisms towards ensuring its success. In the school system, one of the mechanisms to be put in place towards achieving the goals of the school is supervision. This paper therefore examined the meaning of supervision, instructional supervision and the role of supervisor. The paper also, examined major challenges of instructional supervision in secondary schools and the way forward. HEAVY METALS IN THE MYONEMATIC, HEPATIC AND RENAL TISSUES OF THE AFRICAN CAT FISH (Clarias gariepinus) FROM OGBA RIVER, BENIN CITY, NIGERIA.
The concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Cr and As) in the myonematic, hepatic and renal tissues of the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) from Ogba river, Benin City, Nigeria, were determined using a Unicam 929 series atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The concentrations of the aforementioned metals were also determined in water. The mean concentration of Pb ranged from 0.19mg/kg (muscle) to 0.39mg/kg (liver) while the mean concentration of Cd ranged from 0.03mg/kg (muscle) to 0.09mg/kg (liver). The mean concentration of Zn ranged from 0.09mg/kg( muscle) to 0.33mg/kg (liver) while the mean concentration of Cu ranged from 0.23mg/kg (muscle) to 0.76mg/kg(liver). The mean concentration of Cr ranged from 0.19mg/kg (muscle) to 0.41mg/kg (liver) while the mean concentration of As ranged from 0.36mg/kg (kidney) to 0.54mg/kg (muscle). The mean concentrations of the heavy metals in water were Pb(0.09mg/l), Cd(0.04mg/l), Zn(0.01mg/l), Cu(0.53mg/l), Cr(0.38mg/l) and As(0.59mg/l). With the exception of Cu, the mean concentrations of the heavy metals in water were generally above the World Health Organization (WHO) maximum allowable limit for the respective metals in drinking water implying that water from the river is unfit for human consumption owing to heavy metal contamination. The mean concentrations of Cr and As exceeded the WHO maximum allowable limits for fish food. The direct implication of this finding is that people who consume fish from the river are liable to potential health hazards resulting from Cr and As contamination.Ă‚
Socio-ecological risks management dynamic simulation in megaproject development of the Edinburgh Tram Network
Purpose
The inherent risks and their interactive impacts in megaproject development have been found in numerous cases worldwide. Although risk management standards have been recommended for the best practice in engineering construction projects, there is still a lack of systematic approaches to describing the interactions. Interactions such as social, technical, economic, ecological and political (STEEP) risks have complex and dynamic implications for megaproject construction. For a better understanding and effective management of megaprojects such as the Edinburgh Tram project, the dynamic interaction of concomitant risks must be studied.
Design/methodology/approach
A systems dynamic methodology was adopted following the comprehensive literature review. Documentary data were gathered from the case study on Tram Network Project in Edinburgh.
Findings
A casual loop of typical evolution of key indicators of risks was then developed. A hypothesised model of social and ecological (SE) risks was derived using the system dynamics (SD) modelling technique. The model was set up following British Standards on risk management to provide a generic tool for risk management in megaproject development. The study reveals that cost and time overruns at the developmental stage of the case project are caused mainly by the effects of interactions of risk factors from the external macro project environment on a timely basis.
Originality/value
This article presented a model for simulating the socio-ecological risk confronting the management and construction of megaprojects. The use of SD provided the opportunity to explain the nature of all risks, particularly the SE risks in the past stages of project development
Investigation of household refrigerator system with varied capillary tube length
Abstract : In this paper, the performance of R600a was investigated in a household refrigerator originally designed to work with R134a using varied capillary tube length (1.0, 1.15, 1.30 and 1.45 m). The refrigerator was instrumented with four thermocouples at the inlet and outlet of the major components. Also, two pressure gauges were connected to the compressor to measure the suction and discharge of the compressor. The experimental results were used to evaluate the performance of the system. The results showed that at optimal capillary tube length the COP and cooling capacity of R600a in the system increased with 45% and 4.2% respectively and the power consumption reduced with 25% using 1.30 m varied capillary tube length compared to R134a. Conclusively, R600a can serve as a retrofit in the household refrigerator systems originally designed to work with R134a refrigerant
Survival of Escherichia Coli in Lagos Lagoon
There was a gradual decrease in the population of Escherichia coli incubated in autoclaved and unautoclaved (raw) water samples obtained from three different sampling stations of the Lagos lagoon. The survival period of the bacterium was generally shorter in the unautoclaved than in the autoclaved water sample; and also varied with the season. In November, 1976, the survival periods in unautoclaved (raw) samples were 6 and 8 days respectively; while in February, 1977 they were 12 days for all three water samples. For the autoclaved water samples the survival periods in November 1976 were 12 and 14 days; while in February, 1977 they were 22, 24 and 32 days. The survival period was also affected by seasonal variations in some physic-chemical parameters of the lagoon
