    Deformation structures at the margins of ice streams

    Ice streams are fast moving regions within the large ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica. Recent developments of high resolution ice sounding radar systems for deployment from an aircraft or on the ground allow a detailed view of internal structures associated with the particular stress and strain fields related to the particular flow fields across the margins between slow and fast moving ice. Exemplary data will be shown from the margins of the North-East Greenland ice stream which were obtained in association with the EASTGRIP icecore drilling project

    Multi-angle, Frequency and Polarization Radar Measurement of Ice Sheets

    Radio echo sounding of polar ice sheets provides important information on the ice bed topography and internal layers. These data have been used by scientists to create 3D maps of polar ice sheets for climate modeling as well as to reconstruct the climate history that dates back to hundreds of thousands of years. In this paper, we present the design, and development of three surface-based multi-channel radars in the VHF and UHF bands. We provide results from radar data multi-frequency and polarization radar data collected over the Greenland ice sheet. All the three radars shared the same digital waveform generator and digitizer, and were installed in and operated on a tracked vehicle. The radars are operated with 3 different antenna arrays designed for operation over 170-230 MHz, 180-340 MHz and 600-900 MHz. The results we sounded more than 2.7 km thick ice with radars operating at frequencies as high as 850 MHz with more than 40 dB signal-to-noise ratio

    As part of a fatal human plague case investigation, we showed that the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis, can survive for at least 24 days in contaminated soil under natural conditions. These results have implications for defining plague foci, persistence, transmission, and bioremediation after a natural or intentional exposure to Y. pestis

    Stagnant ice and age modelling in the Dome C region, Antarctica

    The European Beyond EPICA project aims to extract a continuous ice core of up to 1.5 Ma, with a maximum age density of 20 kyr m-1 at Little Dome C (LDC). We present a 1D numerical model which calculates the age of the ice around Dome C. The model inverts for basal conditions and accounts either for melting or for a layer of stagnant ice above the bedrock. It is constrained by internal reflecting horizons traced in radargrams and dated using the EPICA Dome C (EDC) ice core age profile. We used three different radar datasets ranging from a 10 000 km2 airborne survey down to 5 km long ground-based radar transects over LDC. We find that stagnant ice exists in many places, including above the LDC relief where the new Beyond EPICA drill site (BELDC) is located. The modelled thickness of this layer of stagnant ice roughly corresponds to the thickness of the basal unit observed in one of the radar surveys and in the autonomous phase-sensitive radio-echo sounder (ApRES) dataset. At BELDC, the modelled stagnant ice thickness is 198Β±44 m and the modelled oldest age of ice is 1.45Β±0.16 Ma at a depth of 2494Β±30 m. This is very similar to all sites situated on the LDC relief, including that of the Million Year Ice Core project being conducted by the Australian Antarctic Division. The model was also applied to radar data in the area 10-15 km north of EDC (North Patch), where we find either a thin layer of stagnant ice (generally <60 m) or a negligible melt rate (<0.1 mm yr-1). The modelled maximum age at North Patch is over 2 Ma in most places, with ice at 1.5 Ma having a resolution of 9-12 kyr m-1, making it an exciting prospect for a future Oldest Ice drill site

    BACKGROUND: MiroCam, a capsule endoscope, uses a novel transmission technology, electric-field propagation, which uses the human body as a conduction medium for data transmission. OBJECTIVE: To compare the ability of the MiroCam (MC) and PillCam (PC) to identify sources of obscure GI bleeding (OGIB). DESIGN: Prospective, multicenter, comparative study. SETTING: Six academic hospitals. PATIENTS: A total of 105 patients with OGIB. INTERVENTION: Patients ingested both the MC and PC capsules sequentially in a randomized fashion. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: Concordance of rates in identifying a source of OGIB, operational times, and rates of complete small-bowel examination. RESULTS: Data analysis resulted in 43 (48%) abnormal cases identifying a source of OGIB by either capsule. Twenty-four cases (55.8%) were positive by both capsules. There was negative agreement in 46 of 58 cases (79.3%). The ΞΊ index was 0.547 (Ο‡(2) = 1.32; P = .36). In 12 cases, MC positively identified a source that was not seen on PC, whereas in 7 cases, PC positively identified a source that was not seen on MC. MC had a 5.6% higher rate of detecting small-bowel lesions (P = .54). MC captured images at 3 frames per second for 11.1 hours, and PC captured images at 2 frames per second for 7.8 hours (P \u3c .0001). Complete small-bowel examination was achieved in 93.3% for MC and 84.3% for PC (P = .10). LIMITATIONS: Readers were not blinded to the particular capsule they were reading. CONCLUSION: A positive diagnostic finding for OGIB was identified by either capsule in 48% of cases. The concordance rate between the 2 capsules was comparable to that of prior studies in identifying sources of small-bowel bleeding. The longer operational time of the MC may result in higher rates of complete small-bowel examination, which may, in turn, translate into a higher rate of detecting small-bowel lesions.
