    Substellar Companions to Seven Evolved Intermediate-Mass Stars

    We report the detections of substellar companions orbiting around seven evolved intermediate-mass stars from precise Doppler measurements at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. o UMa (G4 II-III) is a giant with a mass of 3.1 M_sun and hosts a planet with minimum mass of m_2sini=4.1 M_J in an orbit with a period P=1630 d and an eccentricity e=0.13. This is the first planet candidate (< 13 M_J) ever discovered around stars more massive than 3 M_sun. o CrB (K0 III) is a 2.1 M_sun giant and has a planet of m_2sini=1.5 M_J in a 187.8 d orbit with e=0.19. This is one of the least massive planets ever discovered around ~2 M_sun stars. HD 5608 (K0 IV) is an 1.6 M_sun subgiant hosting a planet of m_2sini=1.4 M_J in a 793 d orbit with e=0.19. The star also exhibits a linear velocity trend suggesting the existence of an outer, more massive companion. 75 Cet (G3 III:) is a 2.5 M_sun giant hosting a planet of m_2sini=3.0 M_J in a 692 d orbit with e=0.12. The star also shows possible additional periodicity of about 200 d and 1880 d with velocity amplitude of ~7--10 m/s, although these are not significant at this stage. nu Oph (K0 III) is a 3.0 M_sun giant and has two brown-dwarf companions of m_2sini= 24 M_J and 27 M_J, in orbits with P=530.3 d and 3190 d, and e=0.126 and 0.17, respectively, which were independently announced by Quirrenbach et al. (2011). The ratio of the periods is close to 1:6, suggesting that the companions are in mean motion resonance. We also independently confirmed planets around k CrB (K0 III-IV) and HD 210702 (K1 IV), which had been announced by Johnson et al. (2008) and Johnson et al. (2007a), respectively.     Discotic liquid crystals of transition metal complexes 48: Synthesis of novel phthalocyanine-fullerene dyads and effect of a methoxy group on their clearing points

    In our previous work, we could successfully synthesize the 1:1 phthalocyanine-fullerene (Pc-C-60) dyads, (OFbaC(60))PcCu(OCH3) 2, in very high yields (81 similar to 96%) by using Prato reaction. In this study, we have prepared novel Pc-C-60 dyads, (OFbaC(60)) PcM (M = Co (a), Ni (b), Cu (c), metal free (d)) 3a-3d without the methoxy group. The target Pc-C-60 dyads 3a-3d could be successfully synthesized in good yields also by Prato reaction. It is surprising for us that removal of a very small methoxy group from the big (OFbaC(60))PcCu(OCH3) molecule (2) significantly lowers the cp of (OFbaC(60))PcCu (3c) by about 70 degrees C in comparison with that of 2 having the methoxy group. Very interestingly, each of the novel dyads 3a-3d synthesized here shows perfect homeotropic alignment in the tetragonal columnar phase (Col(tet)). Moreover, it is noteworthy that 3c and 3d show only one Col(tet.o) mesophase having ordered stacking distance with perfect homeotropic alignment.     Discotic liquid crystals of transition metal complexes 50(dagger): spiranthes-like supramolecular structure of phthalocyanine-fullerene dyads

    We have synthesized novel liquid crystalline Pc-C-60 dyads (CnS)(6)PcCu-C-60 (n = 14, 16, 18: 1a-1c) by using our developed synthetic method in order to investigate the mesomorphism and alignment behavior. Each of the (CnS)(6)PcCu-C-60 dyads shows perfect homeotropic alignment in the Col(ho) mesophase between two glass plates for n = 14, 16, 18 and also on a glass plate for n = 14, although none of the parent Pc compounds (CnS)(8)PcCu and the Pc precursors (CnS)(6)PcCu-OH and (CnS)(6)PcCu-OFBA shows homeotropic alignment. It may be attributed to the strong affinity between fullerene and glass surface. Although the reason is not so clear at the present time, this is very useful guideline for the molecular design to prepare homeotropic alignment-showing discotic liquid crystals. Very interestingly, the spherical C-60 parts form a helical structure around the column formed by the disk-like Pc parts. This supramolecular structure very resembles spiranthes.     Discotic liquid crystals of transition metal complexes 49: establishment of helical structure of fullerene moieties in columnar mesophase of phthalocyanine-fullerene dyads

    A homologous series of the phthalocyanine-fullerene dyads, C-n-PcM(OFbaC60) (n = 6, 8, 10, 12; M = Cu, Ni, Co: 3a-3f), have been synthesized to obtain homeotropic alignment at rt and investigate the effects of spacer chain length (n = 6, 8, 10, 12) and central metal (M = Cu, Ni, Co) on the mesomorphism. Interestingly, the shorter-spacer-substituted (n = 6, 8; M = Cu) dyads 3a and 3b showed a hexagonal columnar mesophase (Col(h)), whereas the longer-spacer-substituted (n = 10, 12; M = Cu, Ni, Co) dyads 3c-3f showed a tetragonal columnar mesophase (Col(tet)). Moreover, each of the homologs 3a-3e shows perfect homeotropic alignment in both the Col(h) and Col(tet) mesophases at rt. More interestingly, these columnar mesophases gave a very unique XRD reflection peak denoted as Peak H in a very small angle region of 0.8 < 2 theta < 2.0 degree. We have established at the first time from our developed two new XRD sample preparation techniques that the Peak H is due to the helical structure of fullerenes around columns formed by one-dimensionally stacked Pc cores. 1D nano array structure of donor and acceptor between two electrodes is recently proposed to obtain higher photoelectric conversion efficiency for organic thin film solar cells. This 1D nano array structure is almost compatible with the present homeotropically aligned Pc-C-60 dyads 3a-3f between two glass plates.     A Double Planetary System around the Evolved Intermediate-Mass Star HD 4732

    We report the detection of a double planetary system orbiting around the evolved intermediate-mass star HD 4732 from precise Doppler measurements at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO) and Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). The star is a K0 subgiant with a mass of 1.7 M_sun and solar metallicity. The planetary system is composed of two giant planets with minimum mass of msini=2.4 M_J, orbital period of 360.2 d and 2732 d, and eccentricity of 0.13 and 0.23, respectively. Based on dynamical stability analysis for the system, we set the upper limit on the mass of the planets to be about 28 M_J (i>5 deg) in the case of coplanar prograde configuration.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Antineoplastic Effects of Gamma Linolenic Acid on Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cell Lines

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effect and the mechanism of gamma linolenic acid (GLA) treatment on human hepatocellular (HCC) cell lines. The human HCC cell line HuH7 was exposed to GLA. Cell proliferation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation including lipid peroxidation and apoptosis were compared. We then used a cDNA microarray analysis to investigate the molecular changes induced by GLA. GLA treatment significantly reduced cell proliferation, generated ROS, and induced apoptosis. After 24 h exposure of Huh7 cells to GLA, we identified several genes encoding the antioxidant proteins to be upregulated: heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), aldo-keto reductase 1 family C1 (AKR1C1), C4 (AKR1C4), and thioredoxin (Trx). The HO-1 protein levels were overexpressed in Huh7 cells after GLA exposure using a Western blot analysis. Furthermore, chromium mesoporphyrin (CrMP), an inhibitor of HO activity, significantly potentiated GLA cytotoxicity. GLA treatment has induced cell growth inhibition, ROS generation including lipid peroxidation, and HO-1 production for antioxidant protection against oxidative stress caused by GLA in Huh7 cells.     A new heterozygous compound mutation in the CTSA gene in galactosialidosis

    Galactosialidosis is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease caused by the combined deficiency of lysosomal β-galactosidase and neuraminidase due to a defect in the protective protein/cathepsin A. Patients present with various clinical manifestations and are classified into three types according to the age of onset: the early infantile type, the late infantile type, and the juvenile/adult type. We report a Japanese female case of juvenile/adult type galactosialidosis. Clinically, she presented with short stature, coarse facies, angiokeratoma, remarkable action myoclonus, and cerebellar ataxia. The patient was diagnosed with galactosialidosis with confirmation of impaired β-galactosidase and neuraminidase function in cultured skin fibroblasts. Sanger sequencing for CTSA identified a compound heterozygous mutation consisting of NM_00308.3(CTSA):c.746 + 3A>G and c.655-1G>A. Additional analysis of her mother’s DNA sequence indicated that the former mutation originated from her mother, and therefore the latter was estimated to be from the father or was a de novo mutation. Both mutations are considered pathogenic owing to possible splicing abnormalities. One of them (c.655-1G>A) is novel because it has never been reported previously
