    Transversal inhomogeneities in dilute vibrofluidized granular fluids

    The spontaneous symmetry breaking taking place in the direction perpendicular to the energy flux in a dilute vibrofluidized granular system is investigated, using both a hydrodynamic description and simulation methods. The latter include molecular dynamics and direct Monte Carlo simulation of the Boltzmann equation. A marginal stability analysis of the hydrodynamic equations, carried out in the WKB approximation, is shown to be in good agreement with the simulation results. The shape of the hydrodynamic profiles beyond the bifurcation is discussed

    Dynamics of vibrofluidized granular gases in periodic structures

    The behavior of a driven granular gas in a container consisting of MM connected compartments is studied employing a microscopic kinetic model. After obtaining the governing equations for the occupation numbers and the granular temperatures of each compartment we consider the various dynamical regimes. The system displays interesting analogies with the ordering processes of phase separating mixtures quenched below the their critical point. In particular, we show that below a certain value of the driving intensity the populations of the various compartments become unequal and the system clusterizes. Such a phenomenon is not instantaneous, but is characterized by a time scale, Ï„\tau, which follows a Vogel-Vulcher exponential behavior. On the other hand, the reverse phenomenon which involves the ``evaporation'' of a cluster due to the driving force is also characterized by a second time scale which diverges at the limit of stability of the cluster.Comment: 11 pages, 17 figure

    A multilevel screening strategy defines a molecular fingerprint of proregenerative olfactory ensheathing cells and identifies SCARB2, a protein that improves regenerative sprouting of injured sensory spinal axons

    Olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) have neuro-restorative properties in animal models for spinal cord injury, stroke, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Here we used a multistep screening approach to discover genes specifically contributing to the regeneration-promoting properties of OECs. Microarray screening of the injured olfactory pathway and of cultured OECs identified 102 genes that were subsequently functionally characterized in cocultures of OECs and primary dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. Selective siRNA-mediated knockdown of 16 genes in OECs (ADAMTS1, BM385941, FZD1, GFRA1, LEPRE1, NCAM1, NID2, NRP1, MSLN, RND1, S100A9, SCARB2, SERPINI1, SERPINF1, TGFB2, and VAV1) significantly reduced outgrowth of cocultured DRG neurons, indicating that endogenous expression of these genes in OECs supports neurite extension of DRG neurons. In a gain-of-function screen for 18 genes, six (CX3CL1, FZD1, LEPRE1, S100A9, SCARB2, and SERPINI1) enhanced and one (TIMP2) inhibited neurite growth. The most potent hit in both the loss- and gain-of-function screens was SCARB2, a protein that promotes cholesterol secretion. Transplants of fibroblasts that were genetically modified to overexpress SCARB2 significantly increased the number of regenerating DRG axons that grew toward the center of a spinal cord lesion in rats. We conclude that expression of SCARB2 enhances regenerative sprouting and that SCARB2 contributes to OEC-mediated neuronal repair. © 2013 Asian Network for Scientific Information

    Influence of gravity on a granular Maxwell’s demon experiment

    In the usual description of the granular Maxwell’s demon experiment, where phase separation occurs due to an instability in the densities, the control parameter scales linearly with gravity. In this paper we investigate this scaling experimentally using the properties of diamagnetic particles in strong magnetic-field gradients to reduce and even balance gravitation. We find that phase separation occurs even at vanishingly small gravitational accelerations as is predicted by other theories. This is due to the fact that granular samples tend to form clusters as a result of the inelasticity of the particle collisions. Combining the heat balance of the driven granular gas with the cooling rate and thus the appearance of clustering, we are able to describe the crossover between the limiting cases

    Silentium: DSE 2018: A Silent Delivery Drone

    Major delivery companies such as DHL, UPS or Amazon have been developing small drones to deliver packages. This alternative to truck delivery is expected to start operating in the near future. The advantages of it are its speed, price, safety and sustainability: parcels would not be subjected to traffic and they would be delivered within an hour, it is 10% less expensive and it means a 73% reduction in CO2 emissions when compared to truck delivery, as well as a relieve in the road traffic network. The only drawback is that the noise produced by current drones is deemed by humans as more annoying than car noise due to its high frequency. The mission of the Silent Delivery Drone project is to provide a drone delivery system that is faster, less expensive and has lower emissions than truck delivery while complying with Dutch noise regulations. The presented innovative configuration is a combination of a quadcopter, suitable for Vertically Taking-Off and Landing (VTOL) in densely populated regions, and a flying wing, optimized for the cruise phase. It consists of a horizontal propeller used during cruise and four vertical propellers for VTOL. The drone can carry a payload of up to 2.5 kg, which corresponds to 89% of the packages delivered yearly worldwide. Four packages can be delivered while flying the maximum range of 30 km. Thanks to the low required revolutions per minute, the absolute maximum noise caused by the drone is 58 dBA at take-off from 7.5 m and 25 dBA during cruise from a distance of 120 m. This meets the Dutch night noise regulations which stablish a peak noise level of 65 dBA and average noise level of 40 dBA. We believe that a fleet of Silentium drones would revolutionize the way we perceive package delivery and it would mark the next step towards a greener, smarter and more connected future.Aerospace Engineerin
