Luttinger liquid behavior in multi-wall carbon nanotubes

The low-energy theory for multi-wall carbon nanotubes including the long-ranged Coulomb interactions, internal screening effects, and single-electron hopping between graphite shells is derived and analyzed by bosonization methods. Characteristic Luttinger liquid power laws are found for the tunneling density of states, with exponents approaching their Fermi liquid value only very slowly as the number of conducting shells increases. With minor modifications, the same conclusions apply to transport in ropes of single-wall nanotubes.Comment: 4 pages Revte

Doping- and size-dependent suppression of tunneling in carbon nanotubes

We study the effect of doping in the suppression of tunneling observed in multi-walled nanotubes, incorporating as well the influence of the finite dimensions of the system. A scaling approach allows us to encompass the different values of the critical exponent α\alpha measured for the tunneling density of states in carbon nanotubes. We predict that further reduction of α\alpha should be observed in multi-walled nanotubes with a sizeable amount of doping. In the case of nanotubes with a very large radius, we find a pronounced crossover between a high-energy regime with persistent quasiparticles and a low-energy regime with the properties of a one-dimensional conductor.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, LaTeX file, pacs: 71.10.Pm, 71.20.Tx, 72.80.R

Engineering adiabaticity at an avoided crossing with optimal control

We investigate ways to optimize adiabaticity and diabaticity in the Landau-Zener model with non-uniform sweeps. We show how diabaticity can be engineered with a pulse consisting of a linear sweep augmented by an oscillating term. We show that the oscillation leads to jumps in populations whose value can be accurately modeled using a model of multiple, photon-assisted Landau-Zener transitions, which generalizes work by Wubs et al. [New J. Phys. 7, 218 (2005)]. We extend the study on diabaticity using methods derived from optimal control. We also show how to preserve adiabaticity with optimal pulses at limited time, finding a non-uniform quantum speed limit

Electronic Properties of Armchair Carbon Nanotubes : Bosonization Approach

The phase Hamiltonian of armchair carbon nanotubes at half-filling and away from it is derived from the microscopic lattice model by taking the long range Coulomb interaction into account. We investigate the low energy properties of the system using the renormalization group method. At half-filling, the ground state is a Mott insulator with spin gap, in which the bound states of electrons at different atomic sublattices are formed. The difference from the recent results [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 5082 (1997)] away half-filling is clarified.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, Revte

Diamagnetism of doped two-leg ladders and probing the nature of their commensurate phases

We study the magnetic orbital effect of a doped two-leg ladder in the presence of a magnetic field component perpendicular to the ladder plane. Combining both low-energy approach (bosonization) and numerical simulations (density-matrix renormalization group) on the strong coupling limit (t-J model), a rich phase diagram is established as a function of hole doping and magnetic flux. Above a critical flux, the spin gap is destroyed and a Luttinger liquid phase is stabilized. Above a second critical flux, a reentrance of the spin gap at high magnetic flux is found. Interestingly, the phase transitions are associated with a change of sign of the orbital susceptibility. Focusing on the small magnetic field regime, the spin-gapped superconducting phase is robust but immediately acquires algebraic transverse (i.e. along rungs) current correlations which are commensurate with the 4k_F density correlations. In addition, we have computed the zero-field orbital susceptibility for a large range of doping and interactions ratio J/t : we found strong anomalies at low J/t only in the vicinity of the commensurate fillings corresponding to delta = 1/4 and 1/2. Furthermore, the behavior of the orbital susceptibility reveals that the nature of these insulating phases is different: while for delta = 1/4 a 4k_F charge density wave is confirmed, the delta = 1/2 phase is shown to be a bond order wave.Comment: 15 pages, 17 figure

Charge Screening Effect in Metallic Carbon Nanotubes

Charge screening effect in metallic carbon nanotubes is investigated in a model including the one-dimensional long-range Coulomb interaction. It is pointed out that an external charge which is being fixed spatially is screened by internal electrons so that the resulting object becomes electrically neutral. We found that the screening length is given by about the diameter of a nanotube.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

A forensic case of hydranencephaly in a preterm neonate fully documented by postmortem imaging techniques.

The authors present a medico-legal autopsy case of hydranencephaly in a male preterm newborn, fully documented by postmortem unenhanced and enhanced imaging techniques (postmortem computed tomography and postmortem magnetic resonance imaging). Hydranencephaly is a congenital anomaly of the central nervous system, consisting in almost complete absence of the cerebral hemispheres and replacement of the cerebral parenchyma by cerebrospinal fluid, rarely encountered in forensic medical practice. A premature baby was born during the supposed 22nd and 24th week of pregnancy in the context of a denial of pregnancy without any follow-up. The newborn died a few hours after birth and medico-legal investigations were requested to determine the cause of death and exclude the intervention of a third person in the lethal process. The external examination revealed neither traumatic nor malformative lesions. Postmortem imaging investigations were typical of hydranencephaly, and conventional medico-legal autopsy, neuropathological examination, and histological examination confirmed a massive necrotic-haemorrhagic hydranencephaly. This case represents in itself an association of out-of-the-ordinary elements making it worthy of interest. Postmortem unenhanced and enhanced imaging techniques (computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) were performed as complementary examination to conventional medico-legal investigations.Postmortem angiography of a preterm newborn is possible with catheterization of the umbilical blood vessels.Hydranencephaly is a congenital anomaly of the central nervous system, consisting in almost complete absence of the cerebral hemispheres and replacement of the brain by cerebrospinal fluid, for which several aetiologies have been postulated

Exclusion Statistics in a two-dimensional trapped Bose gas

We briefly explain the notion of exclusion statistics and in particular discuss the concept of an ideal exclusion statistics gas. We then review a recent work where it is demonstrated that a {\em two-dimensional} Bose gas with repulsive delta function interactions obeys ideal exclusion statistics, with a fractional parameter related to the interaction strength.Comment: 10 pages, RevTeX. Spin-orbit coupling and electron spin resonance for interacting electrons in carbon nanotubes

    Get PDF
We review the theoretical description of spin-orbit scattering and electron spin resonance in carbon nanotubes. Particular emphasis is laid on the effects of electron-electron interactions. The spin-orbit coupling is derived, and the resulting ESR spectrum is analyzed both using the effective low-energy field theory and numerical studies of finite-size Hubbard chains and two-leg Hubbard ladders. For single-wall tubes, the field theoretical description predicts a double peak spectrum linked to the existence of spin-charge separation. The numerical analysis basically confirms this picture, but also predicts additional features in finite-size samples.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, invited review article for special issue in J. Phys. Oscillator Strength of Metallic Carbon Nanotubes

Based on the tight binding method with hopping integral between the nearest-neighbor atoms, an oscillator strength \int_0^{\infty} \d \omega {\rm Re} \sigma (\omega) is discussed for armchair and metallic zigzag carbon nanotubes. The formulae of the oscillator strength are derived for both types of nanotubes and are compared with the result obtained by a linear chain model. In addition, the doping dependence is investigated in the absence of Coulomb interaction. It is shown that the oscillator strength of each carbon nanotube shows qualitatively the same doping dependence, but the fine structure is different due to it's own peculiar band structure. Some relations independent of the radius of the tube are derived, and a useful formula for determining the amount of doping is proposed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to J. Phys. Soc.
