Demolition, Documentary and the Politics of Minjian on Contemporary Chinese Screens

China’s transformation in the reform era has been most immediately experienced by many ordinary citizens in spatial terms, as existing urban communities have been dispersed and their environments levelled, to be replaced by ‘spaces of flows’ that prioritise speed, mobility and circulation. A wide range of Chinese films have represented this experience from the perspective of existing urban communities. This article argues that in certain ‘unofficial’ documentaries produced outside China’s state-sanctioned channels of production and distribution, using small, highly mobile digital video cameras, an engagement with grassroots communities has opened up a new space on screen, in which a critical questioning of the developmental ethos driving contemporary China becomes evident. A close analysis of Ou Ning’s Meishi Street (2006), Shu Haolun’s Nostalgia (2006) and Du Haibin’s A Young Patriot (2015) will illustrate how the unofficial spaces of localised, grassroots cultures (minjian) are represented in these works as sites of resistance to the coercive imposition of a globalised modernity on Chinese cities

The peripheral visual field through the autofocal

From a fitting standpoint, the centre-symmetric bifocal contact lens designs represent the simplest approach to fitting presbyopic hard lens patients with multi-focal lenses. The Wesley-Jessen Autofocal can be ordered from PEK photographs, and the lens performs reasonably well with respect to comfort, centration, and tear exchange. This study was designed to determine empirically if the Autofocal lens design could produce undesirable peripheral field restrictions. No significant predictable field changes were observed in the seven subjects tested in this study. This lens cannot, therefore, be contra-indicated on the basis of altering peripheral form detection

Media, Mobilities and Identity in East and Southeast Asia: Introduction

This collection for Cultural Studies Review aims to address gaps in existing mobilities scholarship from two perspectives. First, while several articles here discuss the physical movement of various groups, the overarching focus is the complex interplay of mobile technologies and information on the one hand, and rapidly evolving formations of culture and identity on the other. Geographically, our focus is outside the ‘global north’, on a region that has perhaps been more dramatically transformed by physical, cultural and informational mobility than any other: East and Southeast Asia. Rather than taking ‘Asia’ as a category of cultural identity, this collection conceptualises the geographic region as a zone of cultural and political plurality, in which a vast array of migrations, imaginings, representations and discourses are constantly bumping up against political and cultural borders, as well as various state-sponsored and state-sanctioned ideas and images, in fascinating and often highly volatile ways. Topic covered in this collection include Hong Kong working holidaymakers in Australia (Louis Ho), literary narratives of overseas adoptees who have returned to South Korea (Ethan Waddell), online debates and conflicts between Chinese migrants and local Chinese-Singaporeans (Sylvia Ang), the politics of representing urban demolition and relocation in independent Chinese documentaries (Dan Edwards), the ‘glocalisation’ of Japanese anime culture in the online space in China (Asako Saito) and the representation of migrant worker experience in South Korean cinema (Sina Kim)

The Internal Chemical Shift - A Key To Bonding In Aromatic Molecules. 2. Substituent Effects On The Carbon-13 Magnetic Resonance Spectra Of The 1,4-disubstituted Benzenes

Carbon-13 magnetic resonance shifts were determined for six families of 1,4-disubstituted benzenes. Linear least-squares correlations between the internal shifts of the families suggest an additivity relationship for 13C substituent effects at all four nonidentical ring carbons and at the α position when one of the substituents has a central carbon. The correlation of 1H and 13C shifts for these compounds is also linear, implying that the additivity relationships derived in a previous 1H study can be generalized to 13C

African trypanosomiasis in travelers returning to the United Kingdom.

Two returning safari tourists with African trypanosomiasis were admitted to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, London, in a 3-day period, compared with six cases in the previous 14 years. We describe the clinical features, diagnosis, and problems encountered in accessing appropriate therapy, and discuss the potential for emergence of this disease in increasingly adventurous international travelers

Kinesthetic imagery provides additive benefits to internal visual imagery on slalom task performance

Recent brain imaging research demonstrates that the use of internal visual imagery (IVI) or kinesthetic imagery (KIN) activates common and distinct brain areas. In this paper we argue that combining the imagery modalities (IVI & KIN) will lead to a greater cognitive representation (with more brain areas activated), and this will cause a greater slalom-based motor performance compared to when using IVI alone. To examine this assertion, we randomly allocated 56 participants to one of three groups: IVI, IVI & KIN, or a math-control. Participants performed a slalom based driving task in a driving simulator, with average lap time used as a measure of performance. Results revealed the IVI & KIN group achieved significantly quicker lap times than IVI and the control groups. The discussion includes a theoretical advancement on why the combination of imagery modalities might facilitate performance, with links made to the cognitive neurosciences literature and applied practice
