Using graphical and pictorial representations to teach introductory astronomy students about the detection of extrasolar planets via gravitational microlensing
The detection and study of extrasolar planets is an exciting and thriving
field in modern astrophysics, and an increasingly popular topic in introductory
astronomy courses. One detection method relies on searching for stars whose
light has been gravitationally microlensed by an extrasolar planet. In order to
facilitate instructors' abilities to bring this interesting mix of general
relativity and extrasolar planet detection into the introductory astronomy
classroom, we have developed a new Lecture-Tutorial, "Detecting Exoplanets with
Gravitational Microlensing." In this paper, we describe how this new
Lecture-Tutorial's representations of astrophysical phenomena, which we
selected and created based on theoretically motivated considerations of their
pedagogical affordances, are used to help introductory astronomy students

Urinary tract reconstruction: Applied urodynamics
Sixty-four patients underwent urinary reconstruction guided by urodynamic investigation. Twenty-eight patients had myelodysplasia (MM) and 26 had spinal cord injuries (SCI). Operative outcomes were assessed by repetitive urodynamic testing. Bladder reservoir function and detrusor contractile activity were correctly assessed in all 64 patients. Operative creation of a more adequate reservoir was required in 58 patients. Assessment of urethral continence function was inaccurate in six instances wherein we judged urethral sphincter function adequate when, in fact, it was not. Ureteral function was judged radiographically or by furosimide renography, or Whitaker perfusion testing. In the two instances where ureteral function was in doubt, it made no difference in outcome. There was a striking resolution of ureteral radiographic abnormalities after reconstruction which we attribute to the low-pressure reservoir.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/38471/1/1930090507_ftp.pd
Secondary analysis of teaching methods in introductory physics: A 50 k-student study

American Journal of Physics, 84(12), 969-974. doi:10.1119/1.4964354Physics education researchers have developed many evidence-based instructional strategies to enhance conceptual learning of students in introductory physics courses. These strategies have historically been tested using assessments such as the Force Concept Inventory (FCI) and the Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation (FMCE). We have performed a review and analysis of FCI and FMCE data published between 1995 and 2014. We confirm previous findings that interactive engagement teaching techniques are significantly more likely to produce high student learning gains than traditional lecture-based instruction. We also establish that interactive engagement instruction works in many settings, including those with students having a high and low level of prior knowledge, at liberal arts and research universities, and enrolled in both small and large classes. Parent and child agreement for acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and other psychopathology in a prospective study of children and adolescents exposed to single-event trauma
Examining parent-child agreement for Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in children and adolescents is essential for informing the assessment of trauma-exposed children, yet no studies have examined this relationship using appropriate statistical techniques. Parent-child agreement for these disorders was examined by structured interview in a prospective study of assault and motor vehicle accident (MVA) child survivors, assessed at 2-4 weeks and 6 months post-trauma. Children were significantly more likely to meet criteria for ASD, as well as other ASD and PTSD symptom clusters, based on their own report than on their parent's report. Parent-child agreement for ASD was poor (Cohen's Îş = -.04), but fair for PTSD (Cohen's Îş = .21). Agreement ranged widely for other emotional disorders (Cohen's Îş = -.07-.64), with generalised anxiety disorder found to have superior parent-child agreement (when assessed by phi coefficients) relative to ASD and PTSD. The findings support the need to directly interview children and adolescents, particularly for the early screening of posttraumatic stress, and suggest that other anxiety disorders may have a clearer presentation post-trauma
Three-dimensional general relativistic hydrodynamics II: long-term dynamics of single relativistic stars
This is the second in a series of papers on the construction and validation
of a three-dimensional code for the solution of the coupled system of the
Einstein equations and of the general relativistic hydrodynamic equations, and
on the application of this code to problems in general relativistic
astrophysics. In particular, we report on the accuracy of our code in the
long-term dynamical evolution of relativistic stars and on some new physics
results obtained in the process of code testing. The tests involve single
non-rotating stars in stable equilibrium, non-rotating stars undergoing radial
and quadrupolar oscillations, non-rotating stars on the unstable branch of the
equilibrium configurations migrating to the stable branch, non-rotating stars
undergoing gravitational collapse to a black hole, and rapidly rotating stars
in stable equilibrium and undergoing quasi-radial oscillations. The numerical
evolutions have been carried out in full general relativity using different
types of polytropic equations of state using either the rest-mass density only,
or the rest-mass density and the internal energy as independent variables. New
variants of the spacetime evolution and new high resolution shock capturing
(HRSC) treatments based on Riemann solvers and slope limiters have been
implemented and the results compared with those obtained from previous methods.
Finally, we have obtained the first eigenfrequencies of rotating stars in full
general relativity and rapid rotation. A long standing problem, such
frequencies have not been obtained by other methods. Overall, and to the best
of our knowledge, the results presented in this paper represent the most
accurate long-term three-dimensional evolutions of relativistic stars available

Electronic learning can facilitate student performance in undergraduate surgical education: a prospective observational study
BACKGROUND: Our institution recently introduced a novel internet accessible computer aided learning (iCAL) programme to complement existing surgical undergraduate teaching methods. On graduation of the first full cycle of undergraduate students to whom this resource was available we assessed the utility of this new teaching facility. METHOD: The computer programme prospectively records usage of the system on an individual user basis. We evaluated the utilisation of the web-based programme and its impact on class ranking changes from an entry-test evaluation to an exit examination in surgery. RESULTS: 74.4% of students were able to access iCAL from off-campus internet access. The majority of iCAL usage (64.6%) took place during working hours (08:00–18:00) with little usage on the weekend (21.1%). Working hours usage was positively associated with improvement in class rank (P = 0.025, n = 148) but out-of hours usage was not (P = 0.306). Usage during weekdays was associated with improved rank (P = 0.04), whereas weekend usage was not (P = 0.504). There were no significant differences in usage between genders (P = 0.3). Usage of the iCAL system was positively correlated with improvement in class rank from the entry to the exit examination (P = 0.046). Students with lower ranks on entry examination, were found to use the computer system more frequently (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: Electronic learning complements traditional teaching methods in undergraduate surgical teaching. Its is more frequently used by students achieving lower class ranking with traditional teaching methods, and this usage is associated with improvements in class ranking
