    Trigonal warping and Berry’s phase Npi in ABC-stacked multilayer graphene.

    The electronic band structure of ABC-stacked multilayer graphene is studied within an effective mass approximation. The electron and hole bands touching at zero energy support chiral quasiparticles characterized by Berry’s phase Nπ for N-layers, generalizing the low-energy band structure of monolayer and bilayer graphene. We investigate the trigonal-warping deformation of the energy bands and show that the Lifshitz transition, in which the Fermi circle breaks up into separate parts at low energy, reflects Berry’s phase Nπ. It is particularly prominent in trilayers, N = 3, with the Fermi circle breaking into three parts at a relatively large energy that is related to next-nearestlayer coupling. For N = 3, we study the effects of electrostatic potentials which vary in the stacking direction, and find that a perpendicular electric field, as well as opening an energy gap, strongly enhances the trigonal-warping effect. In magnetic fields, the N = 3 Lifshitz transition is manifested as a coalescence of Landau levels into triply-degenerate levels

    Semantic annotation enables the development of efficient computational methods for analyzing and interacting with information, thus maximizing its value. With the already substantial and constantly expanding data generation capacity of the life sciences as well as the concomitant increase in the knowledge distributed in scientific articles, new ways to produce semantic annotations of this information are crucial. While automated techniques certainly facilitate the process, manual annotation remains the gold standard in most domains. In this manuscript, we describe a prototype mass-collaborative semantic annotation system that, by distributing the annotation workload across the broad community of biomedical researchers, may help to produce the volume of meaningful annotations needed by modern biomedical science. We present E.D., the Entity Describer, a mashup of the Connotea social tagging system, an index of semantic web-accessible controlled vocabularies, and a new public RDF database for storing social semantic annotations

    Degassing history of water, sulfur, and carbon in submarine lavas from Kilauea volcano, Hawaii

    Major, minor, and dissolved volatile element concentrations were measured in tholeiitic glasses from the submarine portion (Puna Ridge) of the east rift zone of Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii. Dissolved H_(2)O and S concentrations display a wide range relative to nonvolatile incompatible elements at all depths. This range cannot be readily explained by fractional crystallization, degassing of H20 and S during eruption on the seafloor, or source region heterogeneities. Dissolved C0_2 concentrations, in contrast, show a positive correlation with eruption depth and typically agree within error with the solubility at that depth. We propose that most magmas along the Puna Ridge result from (I) mixing of a relatively volatile-rich, undegassed component with magmas that experienced low pressure (perhaps subaerial) degassing during which substantial H_(2)O, S, and C0_2 were lost, followed by (2) fractional crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase from this mixture to generate a residual liquid; and (3) further degassing, principally of C0_2 for samples erupted deeper than 1000 m, during eruption on the seafloor. The degassed end member may form at upper levels of the summit magma chamber (assuming less than lithostatic pressure gradients), during residence at shallow levels in the crust, or during sustained summit eruptions. The final phase of degassing during eruption on the seafloor occurs slowly enough to achieve melt/vapor equilibrium during exsolution of the typically CO_(2)-rich vapor phase. We predict that average Kilauean primary magmas with 16% MgO contain ~0.47 wt% H_(2)O, ~900 ppm S, and have δD values of ~-30 to -40‰. Our model predicts that submarine lavas from wholly submarine volcanoes (i.e., Loihi), for which there is no opportunity to generate the degassed end member by low pressure degassing, will be enriched in volatiles relative to those from volcanoes whose summits have breached the sea surface (i.e., Kilauea and Mauna Loa)

    The so called magnetic scenario recently suggested in \cite{Liao_ES_mono} emphasizes the role of monopoles in strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) near/above the deconfinement temperature, and specifically predicts that they help reduce its viscosity by the so called "magnetic bottle" effect. Arguments for "magnetic liquid" in 1-2TcT_c based on lattice measurement of monopole density were provided in \cite{Chernodub}. Here we present results for monopole-(anti)monopole correlation functions from the same classical molecular dynamics simulations, which are found to be in very good agreement with recent lattice results \cite{D'Alessandro:2007su}. We show that the magnetic Coulomb coupling does run in the direction oppositeopposite to the electric one, as expected, and it is roughly inverse of the asymptotic freedom formula for the electric one. However, as TT decreases to TcT_c, the magnetic coupling never gets weak, with the plasma parameter always large enough (Γ>1\Gamma>1). This nicely agrees with empirical evidences from RHIC experiments, implying that magnetic objects cannot have large mean free path and should also form a good liquid with low viscosity.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.     Defective Gut Function in \u3cem\u3eDrop-Dead\u3c/em\u3e Mutant \u3cem\u3eDrosophila\u3c/em\u3e

    Mutation of the gene drop-dead (drd ) causes adult Drosophila to die within 2 weeks of eclosion and is associated with reduced rates of defecation and increased volumes of crop contents. In the current study, we demonstrate that flies carrying the strong allele drdlwf display a reduction in the transfer of ingested food from the crop to the midgut, as measured both as a change in the steady-state distribution of food within the gut and also in the rates of crop emptying and midgut filling following a single meal. Mutant flies have abnormal triglyceride (TG) and glycogen stores over the first 4 days post-eclosion, consistent with their inability to move food into the midgut for digestion and nutrient absorption. However, the lifespan of mutants was dependent upon food presence and quality, suggesting that at least some individual flies were able to digest some food. Finally, spontaneous motility of the crop was abnormal in drdlwf flies, with the crops of mutant flies contracting significantly more rapidly than those of heterozygous controls. We therefore hypothesize that mutation of drd causes a structural or regulatory defect that inhibits the entry of food into the midgut

    Study of the spring and autumn daemon-flux maxima at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory

    Detection of daemons in low-background conditions in September 2005 and March 2006 has provided evidence for the expected to occur at that times maxima in the flux of daemons with V ~ 10-15 km s-1, which hit the Earth from near-Earth, almost circular heliocentric orbits. The ability of some FEU-167-1 PM tubes with a thicker inner Al coating to detect directly daemon passage through them has also been demonstrated, an effect increasing ~100-fold the detector efficiency. As a result, the daemon flux recorded at the maxima was increased from ~10-9 to ~10-7 cm-2 s-1. The intensity and direction of the flux during maxima depend on the time of day and latitude of observations (therefore, synchronous measurements in the Northern and Southern Earth's hemispheres are desirable). All the experimental results obtained either support the conclusions following from the daemon paradigm or find a simple interpretation within it.Comment: 15 pages, including 8 figures and 3 table
