TOK : a tangible interface for storytelling
We present the design of the first prototype of TOK - a tangible interface for children to create their own stories. Based on data collected with two groups of five years old preschoolers we present our findings regarding the interaction design of the system. The picture cards have shown to generate ideas, acting as input for the creation of stories, promoting creativity while proposing a framework that supports and guides the construction of logical structures. This is a first step in an effort to build a toolkit of tangible interfaces allowing children and teachers to build their own digital enhanced learning activities.FCT-QREN-COMPETE-U
A exploração
de conteúdos faz-se tanto linear como não linearmente. O protótipo não requer cabos, nem baterias
TOK: developing a tangible platform for storytelling
This paper describes a first study of a tangible interface, consisting of a platform and a set of picture cards that children can use to create stories. The handling of the picture cards has shown to be highly motivating and engaging, helping children to build a storyline creating logical relations among different characters and objects. The interface works like an experimental space where children can play with the language and simultaneously reflect over it, individually or in a collaborative process. We present the design of the first prototype and the data collected with two groups of five years old preschoolers and report our findings regarding the interaction design, as well as a reflection over future work.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - projeto PTDC/CPE-CED/110417/2009 "Developing the next Generation of Hybrid Learning Materials
Is it a book…is it a game? No, it is TOK
The interface presented here aims at helping children to create their own stories and to
reflect over their narratives, in a process whereby they learn how to build logical sequences,
enhancing their vocabulary and literacy.
At the same time we wanted to make it easier for young children to interact with digital
content, through the tangibility of the interface.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - PTDC/CPECED/110417/2009, SFRH/BD/62531/200
Bridging books: the printed book as a support for digital experiences
It has been 20 years since Pierre Wellner published the article
Interacting with paper on the digital desk [1] where he challenges
us to imagine a space where “Instead of replacing paper with
computers we could enhance paper with computation”. Two decades
after, we see the development of multiple projects that expand
the expressive possibilities of traditional books by combining
and crossing different media. Nevertheless the interest generated
by those projects is limited, most of the time, to the research
communities. The purpose of this IDC 2013 workshop is to bring
together a community of researchers, publishers and authors to
reflect and discuss the present and future impact of mixed media
books.(undefined
A Narrativa grafica das criancas dios 5 aos 10 anos de idade
The goal of this research was to typify the graphic form a narrative obtained from children aged 5 to 10 years old. It studied the graphic organization as far as the support utilized, the narrative moments represented, the representation of space and personages involved in the narrative. It begins with an interdisciplinary theoretical study, necessary for a global understanding of this theme: the Communication Process and Visual Communication; Child Development concerning graphic expression and cognitive development; the Narrative Text and its structuration. It also has a description of the research methodology used in this study as far as the selection of the sample, the "corpus" of the data collected and the treatment of this data. Finally presents an analysis of the collected data, a syntheses of the overall results (by ages), and specific references to the aspects inherent to different sex groups as well as different type of social affiliation of the children. Concluding, the results of this study reflect the presence of several differentiations concerning the graphic narrative expression across different age levels, and in almost all levels it is relevant the place of social affiliation of the children: urban or rural. The sex variable has some influence, but only for the higher age levelsAvailable from Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia, Servico de Informacao e Documentacao, Av. D.
