How domestic violence counselors with personal histories of trauma experience their clients who were victims of domestic violence: a heuristic study

    Get PDF
The heuristic inquiry-based phenomenological approach values focusing on a question or problem that has been a personal challenge in one’s quest to understand oneself and the phenomenon. Previous research has shown that counselors with a personal history of trauma who provide services to victims with a similar history report a range of negative consequences. The researcher utilized a heuristic research design to answer the following question: How do domestic violence counselors who have personal histories of trauma experience their clients who were victims of domestic violence? The methodology involved interviewing eight counselors, from whom four themes were identified: awareness of the counselor’s own experience, counselor’s demonstration of empathy, counselor’s self-care, and counselor’s countertransference. The counselors who were aware of their own traumatic experience conveyed empathy and demonstrated greater countertransference, which prompted the need for deliberate self-care activities. Four counselors who conveyed empathy demonstrated the overinvolvement form of countertransference, while counselors with low empathy demonstrated the distance or hostility form of countertransference. Keywords: awareness of the counselor’s own experience, clients, counselors, counselor’s demonstration of empathy, counselor’s self-care, counselor’s countertransference, counselors with personal history of trauma, countertransference, domestic violence, effects and management of countertransference, empathy, heuristic inquiry, personal reactions, qualitative research design, survivors, trauma, vicarious traumatization, victim

    Get PDF
Child labor is one of the Philippines' most crucial problems, and emanates from a range of economic and social factors. This research was undertaken to describe the precarious situation of child sex workers in Cebu, Davao, Manila, and Pampanga who are in the tourism industry. Rooted on the Push-Pull factors theory and a descriptive design, it utilized an archival data-gathering method. The data were compiled from the researches done previously on child labor in the tourism industry in the Philippines that included 1046 respondents from the four provinces. Findings revealed that as they work in the establishments and streets, many of these child sex workers are 17 years old (49%), Catholic (88%), female (64%), born in the city/municipality where they work (38%), eldest child in the family (33%), have 3-4 siblings, and are living with their families (48%). A big bulk (67%) of them work to give financial support to help their families or they want to earn easy money. A good number (36%) of them work in bars/pub houses/nightclubs/gay bars/discos, and as entertainers (37%). The higher paid child sex worker earn an average of Php 900.00 per day. At the extreme high end, a few earned an average of Php 5,000 a night but their average daily earnings is only Php 400. Seven hundred-two (51%) are happy with their present jobs, while 678 (49%) also experience pain as they work. All child sex workers covered in the study were offered some form of assistance from the government, NGO’s, the Church, and school, like scholarship, jobs, and livelihood, but only 440 or 42% of them were ready to accept help. The process of reducing, if not eliminating, child labor is a vision that requires the commitment and cooperation of the government, employers, trade unions, and other sectors of society

Communicating the Value Contributions of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PaLM) to Healthcare Administrators, Evidence of Value from a Multiple Cases Study

    Get PDF
Hospital administrators were interviewed to explore their perceptions of the strategic alignment of PaLM value-based activities (VBAs). Hospital based PaLM leaders were interviewed to explore their communication of the VBAs. This study identified a misalignment between the assessments utilized by healthcare administrators for PaLM services and the value contributions of laboratorians. PaLM leaders offered insight into the laboratory’s value chain. Three themes emerged from the data: PaLM VBAs, PaLM communication efforts, and PaLM VBA strategic alignment. Together these findings suggest that hospital laboratorians offer untapped value in healthcare, and hospital administrators failing to recognize this value miss opportunities to improve value and capture cost savings. Suggestions to improve the communication of PaLM VBAs and the perceptions of hospital administrators are made

Idaho Power: Snake River White Sturgeon Conservation Plan

    Get PDF
Sturgeon are considered the largest freshwater fish in North America. They can grow up to 1,500 pounds and live to be 100 years old. In Idaho, they reside in the Snake, Lower Salmon, and Kootenai Rivers. Due to their late sexual maturity and vulnerability to over-fishing, there is a state law that allows for catch and release only. Sturgeon return to their birthplace to spawn or lay eggs when they reach adulthood. With Idaho Power placing hydroelectric plants along the Snake River, it makes it difficult for them to return to these birthplaces. Placing fish ladders at these plants would be a way to allow the sturgeon passage over the plant, but it would be an expensive solution. The way that Idaho Power is addressing this issue is catching the fish when they are at the bottom of the hydroelectric plant, take them into their labs where they examine the fish and using electronic tags that track data about the sturgeon, then take them up river to release them back into the river. In doing this, it provides more information about the fish passing through at a fraction of the cost of fish ladders

M.S. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2016.Includes bibliographical references. The successful physics program of the Belle experiment at KEK, Tsukuba, Japan, resulted in an upgrade of the KEKB collider and of the Belle detector. The expanded Belle II international collaboration, consisting of over 500 physicists and engineers from 97 institutions spread worldwide, aims to precisely test the Standard Model of particle physics, more specifically in a search for rare B and D meson decays, and charge parity (CP) violation, by performing unprecedented precision measurements. University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH Manoa) played a lead role in the design and construction of the iTOP and KLM detectors, in particular their electronic readout. For this purpose, a pair of state-of-the-art Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) were developed in support for this world class experiment. Details of the TARGETX ASIC, a 16-channel Giga- Samples Per Second (GSPS) digitizer, developed by the Instrumentation Development Laboratory (IDLab), will be presented. Automated calibration routines were developed. Then, the performance of the ASIC was evaluated. In addition, the KLM detector readout electronics system was mass produced. Fully automated production test software was developed to systematically verify its correct operation. A serial numbering system with barcodes was set in place to properly monitor each sub-readout module and store results in a PostgreSQL database. The complete readout system will be presented, which is consisting of more than 20,000 measurement channels, and its associated electronic system

    Get PDF
Nationalism and Social Advocacy are two aspects that build the youth’s collective social and political identity. This study focused on identifying the significant relationship between nationalism and social advocacy amongst 35 select Generation Z university students. With the use of the ISSP National Identity Module 2013 Edition and the Social Issues advocacy scale, the respondents’ nationalism and social advocacy levels were defined, respectively. Along with a letter of informed consent, both scales were embedded and distributed using an online survey tool to individuals that fit the inclusion criteria within Metro Manila. The results were analyzed and organized using the Pearson R Correlation test and descriptive statistics per variable, under the SPSS Statistics tool ver. 27, to determine the possible relationship between these two variables. The findings show that select university students have a high level of nationalism and social advocacy, and a strong positive significant relationship was found between the two variables. In addition to this, the direct relationship between both variables may indicate increased civic engagement, hence the recommendation of studying either variable in political activism amongst the youth or another field of university students in Metro Manila

    Get PDF
This study attempted to determine the grammar learning strategy and grammatical competence level of the 2nd year and 3rd year pre-service teachers. Additionally, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between their grammar learning strategy usage and grammatical competence level. To this end, the study employed the descriptive-correlational research method. Data were collected through a questionnaire facilitated in Google Forms. The study's results revealed that, first, the pre-service teachers have highly used the Grammar Learning Strategies in general and when categorized as Cognitive, Meta-cognitive, and Socio-affective; although all GLS categories were highly used, the one with the highest mean was the Cognitive GLS while the least was the Socio-affective GLS. Second, respondents were found to have a fair level of grammatical competence in general as well as when specified to Subject-Verb Agreement, Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement, Parts of Speech, and Adjective-Adverb Agreement. Lastly, it was found in this present study that there is a highly significant relationship between grammar learning strategy usage and grammatical competence level but it is a weak positive correlation at 0.20. This outcome is conducive to better understand the pre-service teachers' GLS usage, to maximize the other GLS which were not highly used, and to supply some references for enhancing one’s grammatical competence level.  Article visualizations
